If you want to get her personal lingerie, I think a safer bet is what someone suggested earlier…a special robe. But don’t get silk which is expensive and hard to care for. A satin kimono style robe would be something she might even use on the wedding day in the “getting ready” phase. (I meant getting ready for the wedding and before putting on her bridal gown!!!).
This was my thought. Wedding-night wear is something to be given by a close girlfriend or other contemporary of the bride, not someone a generation older. Get her something beautiful and permanent, something she’ll treasure for 50+ years, something which can be publicly displayed and then handed down to her grandchildren someday. Beautiful serving ware, crystal candlesticks, an anniversary clock. Not a sexy nightie. Just no.
But if you absolutely must give her lingerie, do not – repeat – DO NOT give it to her at the shower. She’ll be mortified.
I’ll dissent and say I don’t see what the big deal is about a peignoir or from from someone a generation older, providing it’s nice and not Fredricks of Hollywood.
I do agree the “slip” types with spaghetti straps are a bad idea, however. I am broad shouldered and busty, and I could not have worn those things at all. They are so unflattering unless you’re tiny up top. The robe is a lot safer.
I agree that robes are useful and can be quite attractive. Honestly, I get way too cold to wear sexy nighties and always have. I personally only buy things that can be washed and dried in the machine.
I still vote for crystal or lovely serving dish or piece over a nightie or robe
Thanks for your opinions and I will take them to heart. I did ask a friend who has 3 daughters if lingerie was still worn by young women and she said absolutely, so I think that is just a personal thing. I also don’t get the inappropriateness of it coming from one generation older. I appreciate those who said that in a tactful way, but for those who did not, I don’t like references such as creeped out, icky, etc. it’s as if you are calling me that, and then I am on my defensive.
I now wonder if I even want to ask opinions here, as there seems to be a breakdown of anonymous internet courtesy. Please everyone, be mindful as you type.
From the OP I also like the second. I like BB’s too. I don’t see why everyone is being so negative. I think it’s a great idea. No, today’s young women don’t sleep in those but they aren’t meant for sleeping. It’s for her honeymoon for gosh sake. I think it’s totally appropriate and the OP knows her way better than we do.
I received two at my wedding shower. One from my maid of honor and one from an Aunt. I still have them both and it’s been 37 years. They bring back very, very good memories. And nobody was more conservative than I am. Don’t remember what other gifts I received at that shower but I loved those.
I know my DILs still shop at Victoria’s Secret. Haven’t asked if they sleep in them or just produce my grandchildren, but I know sexy lingerie did not die out with our generation.
My mother loves to buy me pretty, but much more revealing night wear than I am comfortable with. (Especially as I raised male children - those items would never be worn, too much risk of a chance encounter on the way to the bathroom.) I guess it is a somewhat personal thing - the gowns are often lovely, just not in my comfort zone.
On the other hand, if she decided to purchase me a luxurious silk robe, I would be over the moon.
I think the comments may have been based on the first set of links - see-through, shortie, etc. That could be a bit uncomfortable esp if you don’t know her style (or her fiancé’s) and strappy, short and see-through could have veered towards inappropriate (as well as potentially unflattering if she is busty). But if you’re talking a silk (or silk like) robe that feels qualitatively different. It feels like - what you might wear lounging on a private deck before dressing to go out. Or what you wear while you are blow drying your hair and getting ready for dinner. A little more old world glamour and less ewwww.
I think you got some great suggestions and links here. I might also suggest looking at a silk-like nightshirt (button front kind) or pajamas in an upscale lingerie shop or dept store (not Vic Secret). You could find something there that also fits the elegant bill.
