It should not be surprising. Clothing that leaves something to imagination is like a fancy wrapper on a chocolate truffle. It makes the truffle more desirable. Anticipation is priceless…

Don’t think these would be flattering on me at all - but they do look comfortable.
I was given crotchless panties at my shower from a senior female colleague. I smiled but would have preferred cookie sheets at that event from that guest.
My daughter likes to kick around the house in men’s boxer shorts and a t-shirt but more the baggy kind of boxers not boxer briefs.

I asked my daughter if she thought it was weird for a close friend of mine, and for whom she is named, to give her a nightie. She said not weird, but she would prefer a robe.
So while I am in the camp of don’t give lingerie as a former boss/older friend/ family member decades older…
I do have to ask this question - cause I"m not really sure (cause I don’t and count count on a couple of fingers the # of “lingerie” pieces I have had)…
Who is buying the stuff to keep Victoria’s Secret in business???
I know they sell more than lingerie - work out clothes, bras, bathing suits - but also - lots of skimpy, showy lingerie.
Wonder who their audience is???
I think the majority of their sales are underwear, bras, and the lounge-y kind of comfy sleepwear.
Abasket, they also sell reasonably priced, nice cotton undies. 
Their swimsuit tops are lined and bra-sized - a godsend to folks with bigger chests. Their bras are not that good. When we go in there to claim that free panty that they often send a coupon for, the shoppers are mostly in their late teens or early twenties. Kid says most of store-displayed VS underwear is too skimpy and scratchy for her tastes, but some clothes (sold online only) are very well made and a bargain when they go on sale. Oh no! They discontinued their clothing!

My daughter-in-law helps Victoria’s Secret stay in business. At her age, I bought the sort of things she likes now. Except it was easier to find actual silk lingerie in those days.
She gave me a beautiful silk robe for my birthday. (not from Victoria’s Secret) It washes beautifully in cold water and hangs to dry.
Not all her sleepwear is from VS. She has more conservative pajamas and nightgowns as well. I bet most of her underthings are from there are maybe someplace similar.

My oldest daughter - heading to her third anniversary - received sexy lingerie from her soon-to-be mother-in-law. She never wore it.
My youngest daughter - age 25, recently engaged - generally sleeps in t-shirt and shorts but would wear some of the more comfy looking nighties you guys posted. However fit would be an issue. I just spent an afternoon at Victoria’s Secret with her - give them a thumbs up for bra fitting - and she’s slender with a D cup. Once they got that settled they worked on finding bras with straps that adjust all the way from back to front - not stopping at the shoulder. She tried on 30 bras before settling on ones that fit well - and then she headed to the racks to get them in the colors she liked. Victoria’s Secret is good at what they do - and it’s not all thongs and lacy push-up bras. My daughter buys neither.
To me the OP may have two problems - is it something that will be worn and, if so, will it fit? Shame it isn’t a lingerie shower where some of those questions would be answered ahead of time. A friend got an invite to a lingerie shower and ended up getting an Anthropologie gift card. I know the OP doesn’t want to do that though.
I have on a bra from VS at the moment - tan t-shirt bra. Really comfortable. I went back after watching the sales clerk work with my daughter. They have a section by the dressing rooms that contains a multitude of sample bras and they work with you on exactly what you want and your size. They kept bringing me bras till they figured out exactly what I wanted (not fancy in any way) and the correct size. It fits me better than any bra I’ve owned and is less expensive than some. I probably sound like a commercial but I recommend going and passing the displays with the skimpy stuff (unless that’s what you want) and getting down to what they do really well - fit.
We have had lingerie threads and agree that it can vary tremendously by body–there are no bras at VS that fit me or D properly, but I’m glad that others can find their size and help with fitting. I have a hard time buying people lingerie because I know that many of us are challenging sizes and I hate buying things that I am guessing the person will likely have to return.
A few years ago I took myself to the Very Fancy lingerie store in town and had them fit me. I walked out with three extraordinarily expensive bras (like, from $65 to $120) which fit me better than anything I had ever worn. After a few months, I realized that one of the three was, in fact, head and shoulders better than the other two, and I’ve since bought a few more of those. (From Bare Necessities, when they’re having their 25% off sale.) So I’ve got a total of four bras all the same (well, also a push-up for special clothes) and feel wonderful every single day of the week. 
Honestly, skip the lingerie and get her a men’s button down shirt in the groom’s size!
