Whats up guys? This is my first post, but I’ve been reading up on CC for quite a while for tips and what not about UVa and colleges in general. I’ve been accepted at UVa as an International Student and I felt like I needed help choosing my classes. The main question is this; Can an Arts and Sciences student, like myself, major in Law or Business, or do I need to have applied to Law/Business School for it?

I would like to Major in Law and Minor in Business, with classes in Politics, Philosophy and History to satisfy my curiosity. I’m quite new to the works of US Colleges, neither of my parents have any experience as well, so its a little stressful to figure this out on my own. The SIS on UVa website is not very helpful with my question either, none of the courses from the Course Catalogue work for me, they all seem to be classes from 2007 (meaning when I try to apply for a Lecture or what not it tells me that the given lecture is, or rather was, in 2007. Not sure if this is an Error.)

All your help is very much appreciated.

There is no specific undergraduate law program at UVA. All law degrees in the US are completed through a 3-year graduate program that you apply to after you receive a Bachelor’s degree (7 years total). There is also no specific pre-law or legal-aimed undergraduate program either, although there is a PPL program (Political Theory/Philosophy, Policy and Law) which draws from a number of depts. (history, politics, econ., philosophy) which you may find meets your needs. I believe there is also a way to develop your own major if your GPA is high enough.

With regards to business, UVA has a ‘business’ program for undergraduates, but it is run through the McIntire School of Commerce. However, you have to apply into that program during your second year after you have taken pre-requisite courses in accounting, business, finance, etc. The McIntire programs are quite competitive and many incoming students who have their sights set on getting into McIntire end up doing something else. The Economics dept. is good at UVA and many students who still want to pursue business but do not get into McIntire choose this route as an alternate option.

As far as SIS, I’m afraid I can’t help there…computing services deleted me last year! (Ohhh the downfalls of being an alumni!) :)

In the US system, law is a graduate program. So you are not going to be able to major or minor in that at UVA. For business, UVA has a separate school (the McIntire School of Commerce) that you can apply to transfer into during your second year. In order to do that, there are a couple of courses you need to take during the first two years, you can check there website to see the specific courses, but the big one people are trying to get into at orientation is COMM 1800. If law is your passion, I am under the impression that UVA commerce grads often go on to law school, which is another three years, often at a different university.

Here’s the link to the pre-comm requirements:

Prerequisites

Also, you can not register for courses right now, you can only do that at orientation or after August 4th. They will go over what classes you should take there.
Hope this helps!

Also, if you can’t see the course catalog at all, check out this website. You obviously can’t sign up for anything here, but you’ll be able to access all the information you should be getting from the SIS: [UVa Class Schedule for Fall 2010 (Unofficial. Lou’s List)](http://rabi.phys.virginia.edu/mySIS/CS/)

sweet, thanks guys. I’m very much interested in PPL, I applied to PPE (Politics, Philosophy, Economics) programs in UK, but ended up going with UVa over UK schools, so I’ll def look into PPL. With two years of Econ under my belt, I should be able to meet the requirements for it (which i dont know yet, need to research all of this now lol). As far as transferring goes, I might end up transferring to NYU or Columbia over McIntire (granted I get the grades for it in the first semester) since those are in NYC and I’ve been here for 6 years so its my home. Thanks for letting me know about the registration as well, I’m very much out of the loop about these things in general, summer is getting to me :P.

Thanks again for your help,
Much appreciated.

Yeah, PPL with an econ minor sounds like what you might be interested in. McIntire is a full load with no real room for electives so I do not think that is what you would want to do unless you want to put your politics, philosophy, history, and law courses on hold for 4 years!! There are also honors programs, I have a friend who did Politics Honors and she LOVED it, she was originally PPL which is why I mention it. That kind of goes along with having a high enough GPA to make up your own major, which you could consider if you are not satisfied with the majors… you can explore all of the CLAS majors at [Majors & Minors — Undergraduate, College of Arts & Sciences, U.Va.](http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/college/major/index.html)

Sounds awesome, feels good to finally be on track. Thanks so much for your help guys and gals.

SIS should have a drop down menu which allows you to select a year.

Don’t stress about signing up for classes now, there is a long add/drop period in which you can move your schedule around, with the help of an adviser.

Do you speak another language? Use this time to take or arrange to take your placement test.

I speak two other languages - English is my third language- but dont plan on taking either in College. but thanks for the info. :)
