I have a wedding this Sunday. It’s is a 12 noon at a conservatory. The weather is expected to be mid 50’s and mostly cloudy. I am not 100% sure but believe everything will be indoors (at least I hope so!)

I shopped my closet and am not running out and buying anything new.

My choices are a periwinkle blue Nicole Miller fitted sheath dress, sleeveless with V neck and V in the back and ruching at the waist. It’s come to about 2 inches below my knee (one of the most unflattering lenghts on me, imo.) I am planning on black straping shoes, approx 3 inch heel.

My other choice is my The Little Black Dress by Milano of Italy. It is a plain sheath dress and comes to about 2 inches above my knee (I like this length better than the below the knee blue dress.) Very simple, basis little black dress, but very well made. I will wear same heels - though I could go fancier and wear a Stuart Weitzman silver strappy shoe with two inch wide bands of swarovski crystals just below the ankle. Heels are 4 inches. Can’t wear them with blue dress, they would look silly.

The blue dress I have to wear spanx ugh because even though I am am small, and rather thin, it show every bump and bulge. Not necessary for the black dress.

I am wearing a lavender fox wrap over either one.

If I wear the black dress with SW strappy shoes I will wear a diamond necklace. If I wear the black shoes with either dress I will wear a strand of pearls.

I put one one and think - this is the one. Then I try the other one on and think - this is the one.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Only about 50 people are invited to the wedding. The MOB is my H’s office wife and over the years we have become all become friends, so I have know the bride since she was a wee child.

It sounds like you prefer the black dress from your descriptions so I would wear that. I always have a better time and appear happier when I’m more comfortable (aka no spanx).

Black dress. I’ve decided as I’ve become older to wear what I think I look best in. It’s apparent that you think you look best in the black dress, therefore you will be more confident and comfortable. Therefore hands down, black dress.

Agree with black dress with one caveat - some old fashion types still think black is inappropriate to wear to wedding. So long as there is no danger of offending your hosts, go with the black and the lower heel.

I live in NY. No one here thinks black is inappropriate for a wedding.

I do feel more comfortable in the black dress, but I also wanted to go a bit more colorful because it’s spring and I have been wearing black since November. If it was really warm I have a beautiful watered silk green with black swirls in the pattern longish dress with uneven hemline and an under dress. I wore it to a wedding last summer when it was 90 degrees, but it can be worn in spring on a very nice day. Unfortunately, 55 isn’t my idea of a nice spring day, so don’t think it’s an option. I do love it though.

I think you should hem your blue dress so that at least you are happy about the length! (But probably not for this weekend.) Wear the black and hope nobody is offended. Or find a wrap for the green dress.

I think you are looking for our confirmation that a LBD is ok to wear to this wedding. As long as your entire outfit does not look like you are going to a funeral (and it sounds like it will not), you should be fine. Agree about hemming the other dress.

I think the black dress with something like pearls would be fine, but I would not wear silver shoes with crystals in the early afternoon. That is evening wear. I would try to dress it down a bit, rather than up. Do you have a wrap in a lighter color that would go with it? Or shoes and a bag in a lighter, brighter color?

I actually think that the Nicole Miller dress sounds more appropriate for an early afternoon wedding, but if you won’t be comfortable, forget it. I would get it hemmed, though.

In my experience, conservatories can be both warmer and more humid than other places. It all depends.

“I think you are looking for our confirmation that a LBD is ok to wear to this wedding.”

I don’t think so as I wear black to almost every wedding I go to. Most, however, are more for fancy evening weddings - with beading, jewels, plunging neckline, etc., and/or floor length. I wear this LBD to cocktail parties, theater & dinner in the city, etc.

I should take the blue dress to the seamstress but the wedding is Sunday and would not be done in time. Plus, no one will be looking at me or commenting on what I am wearing because I am not a VIP at this wedding, so the hem length is not a deal breaker. And when I put it on, I’m ok with wearing it.

Really, no one here will be offended that I an wearing a black dress. At the weddings I go to 90% of the women are in black.

“As long as your entire outfit does not look like you are going to a funeral (and it sounds like it will not)”

I think the lavender fox wrap is a dead give away I’m not dressed for a funeral (I also have a different LBD I wear to exclusively to funerals.)

I have several black wraps I can wear with the green dress (but it also has a little cap sleeve so wrap isn’t a necessity.) I just think it’s too summery for wedding on a 55 degree day. It’s a very flowy dress.

So, if I decide to wear the LBD which shoes should I wear? Do you all think the Stuart Weitzman’s would be too fancy for a noon wedding? And if I wear them should I carry my silver beaded bag or is that too fancy for the time of day?

I personally think the black strappy shoes would be perfectly fine. The other shoes sound nice but IMO they are more suitable for evening events. Can your seamstress do a rush job? It is just hemming.

Not my seamstress. She does all the taking in/fitting at the boutique I go to (but she does things not necessarily bought there) and she takes them home with her. I doubt she would have time to do it and get it back for me early Sunday (if I took it tomorrow morning) as she lives about 50 miles from the store. Not worth it for me to drive to pick it up either Sunday morning.

“Do you have a wrap in a lighter color that would go with it? Or shoes and a bag in a lighter, brighter color?”

Yes, I am wearing it - the lavender fox wrap. I have a nude platform pump and a beige snake skin bag I can carry. Don’t know if I like the shoes with the dress as my legs are still pasty white. I was going to use a cool vintage black bag that I have. Did my nails and toes in a very pretty shade of purple to go with the fox wrap - so I think that should be is enough of a pop of color.

I agree the periwinkle dress sounds more appropriate for a noon wedding (oops, I typed weeding! LOL), especially in April. If the length (and the Spanx! ) don’t drive you crazy, go with periwinkle. It’s not that I don’t think black is inappropriate for weddings, even noon weddings…I just like a bit of color after such a long winter.

The bottom line: you can’t go wrong wearing either of the dresses.

“I just like a bit of color after such a long winter.”

That was my thought about it. I’ve been in black/brown/heather since November - though I rarely wear any color except in summer - and even then - most everything I wear is white. The only other short frock I have is tangerine colored but it’s not nice enough for wedding.

Updating your weather – Sunday NYC forecast: high 62, prior overnight low 45. Mixture of sun and cloud, only 20 % chance of rain. In cast that makes a difference to your decision.

I love the color, periwinkle. If that dress is such an unflattering length for you, can you have it tailored to something short. Short seems to be in style this year. It sounds like a sweet dress, and I love even the sound of the word “periwinkle”.

Get the periwinkle dress shortened and wear it to the next wedding. The LBD sounds fine for this one. And I’d go with the black strappy shoes. I think the sparkly ones are not appropriate for the afternoon. (Actually, it’s my mother’s voice in my head that thinks that. )

I am going to have it shortened. I’ve only worn it once so if I shorten it I’m sure I will get more wear out of it. Next two weddings are both very fancy evening affairs so definitely won’t be wearing either of these dresses. I haven’t been to a daytime wedding in about 35 years (a few have been late afternoon-ish into evening) so it’s hard for me to judge what goes.

It may be quite warm inside if it’s in a conservatory - I have a conservatory and on sunny days it’s 20 degrees warmer than outside. Are you sure the watered silk would not be ok? The color sounds perfect for a spring wedding. If not, I’d go with the black dress/black shoes. I will add that fur is very wintery…perhaps a cashmere wrap would be better?
