Help my daughter decide which college she should attend! Clemson vs Fairfield University vs Stonehill College for Psychology

My D24 applied to 15 schools and got accepted into 10. She has narrowed her decision down to three schools: Clemson University, Fairfield University, and Stonehill College (honors). We have toured both Fairfield and Stonehill and will be touring Clemson this weekend. She plans on majoring in psychology with a minor in either criminology or biology. We would love some input from others, especially since decision day is coming up!

Wow -those are very different.

Is she ok with the religious aspects of the last two schools.

Did she have a preference amongst the first two?

You’ll know more after your Clemson visit - it’s so vastly different in every way.

She’s either going to say, I’m home…or ehhhhh - let’s go back to one of the first two.

I hope your visit goes well and answers a lot of questions.

Good luck.

To determine ROI can you give us your budget per year and net cost at each?
(Tuition fees room board) - (scholarship, grants)= net cost

Does she want warmer weather?
How big of a deal are spectator sports?
Does she want a large university or a medium sized one?

Clemson and Stonehill both have a dynamic Psychology department. Clemson has more science-based options and a research-focused faculty.
Fairfield is a good medium in terms of strong academics but an undergraduate focus.
Fairfield and Stonehill are Catholic colleges so she needs to be okay with crucifixes and a core curriculum.
When you visit, you’ll notice Clemson is quite rural and unmistakably Southern.

We know very happy grads of all three of these colleges. We have also been to Stonehill and Fairfield. Both are terrific schools, and are more similar to each other than to Clemson (in my opinion).

I agree…visiting as an accepted student lets the student view this with the “I could be attending college here” lens. Enjoy your trips!

Thanks for this! I feel the same; she’s either going to love it or hate it when we visit so that will hopefully make up her mind.

We do not have a budget perse; we’re trying to find the best fit for her. Fairfield and Stonehill gave generous merit, which is something to consider. For Clemson, my daughter would also have to do either the Summer Start or the Global Start, which has made her a little hesitant about going there. We’re from MA too, so visiting Clemson has been a little tricky but we’re hoping that she enjoys the campus and weather when we come down.

Thanks for the info about each school’s psychology departments!

I think you will easily be able to narrow it down once you visit Clemson. That place has a vibe.

It ended up being D24’s favorite campus (such a contrast to GT, which we had just come from). We visited on a beautiful sunny January day, friendly vibe and students hanging out together all over the place.

Good luck!

My daughter from NJ is a junior at Clemson, it was a very last minute application, flew down in April 2021, no one from our HS ever went there, she fell in love immediately (was accepted into 20 colleges). She is still in heaven (finance major). There are a lot of students from the northeast there. She will come back to the NYC area after graduation, but loves her experiences there (her summer internship is back here, had plenty of offers in NJ/NYC). I’ve heard some wonderful things about summer start on parent pages.
