Both her kids are marrying this year. One in August, the other in November. She needs MOB dresses for both.
The August dress is obviously her focus now, but I figured I’d throw in the other one too.
For August: Outdoor wedding in New England. Out in the country.
Cocktail dress length.
Colors: Preferably a periwinkle or pale yellow. Not royal blue (that’s what the bridesmaids are wearing).
She’s 5’2”. Pear figure. She likes wearing flowy things — her go-to outfit is leggings and a loose tunic top. She dresses very well — her tops are quite attractive and professional. I think she’d consider a more body-hugging style, but that’s not her instinct.
She’s looked online, and has gone to physical stores. She is shocked by the prices — everything she’s liked is $500-$1000+. She would prefer not to spend that much money. She said the dresses she’s liked online return only 50% of the price if the dress is returned.
For November — it’s an indoor wedding, also in New England, and I don’t know the colors. Cocktail length, too.
I’ll forward all links to her and get feedback. Thanks!
I will be a MOB this fall. I don’t plan to shop at bridal stores as friends have told me they are overpriced. Has she looked at Nordstrom’s (on line or in store)? Also there is an online site called Rent the Runway which rents dresses and would be much more budget friendly. Good luck !
Two of my very good friends got gorgeous MOB dresses at JC Penney. She should go to one of their bigger stores…which will have a formal wear section.
For the fall wedding, tell her to head to Lord and Taylor NOW. They are having sales on their winter clothes and she might find the perfect thing. When Lord and Taylor, has a sale, they have a SALE.
I found that Jessica Howard dresses flatter my figure, and was able to buy one on ebay that offered full refund for returns within 30 days. Luckily, my dress fit well. You can filter choices by “only show ones that offer returns” and for my purchase, it was 100% refund.
Search for “BHFO” … that’s the name of the company that I bought my dress from and was pleased with the entire transaction.
Speaking of sales, Lord and Taylor’s friends and family sale will be happening in late April. That may be too late to take advantage of fall and winter clothes though. Good luck. Do let us know what she picks.
I am a dress-buying dunce, but CC moms really helped me out (paging @chocchipcookie !) I can say that I ended up ordering 3 dresses online from Nordstroms to try them on, and got full refund for the two I returned. I’m pretty sure I paid less than 200 for the one I chose.
I am 5’2" also. I found my mother of the bride dress - after looking everywhere and threatening not to attend the wedding I so hated the dresses I tried on - on www.modcloth.com under special occasions. They ship quickly and the return policy is good, as were the prices. (You can also look at the selections by color. New ones pop up on the site almost daily) I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on the dress.
OMG. I was at Bloomies today with close friend. We saw a navy dress that we both said would be great for a MOG or MOB. Neither of us have the need. The dress was under $500, and store has 25 off sale.
What’s her coloring?
I can wear periwinkle, but yellow would have to be just the right shade.
This dress is striking, but the material may be hot for August.
The web page is too busy for my browser, but JCrew always has a nice selection of dresses that come in lots of colors and styles. Online however, I don’t think they carry them in the store.
Marilyn - I am now obsessed with the first Komarov print chiffon you linked. But Nordstroms doesn’t have my size…Your link lead me to this link which I feel matches the OP description of her friend’s taste:
Gold-colored will work for both, perhaps more of a goldenrod. My mom wore a gold-colored MOG dress twice.
I think also, if there is a FOB around, to coordinate with him would be ultracute, and of course coordinating at least a little with the bridge and groom and their party, perhaps with a shawl or scarf (vest for dad) would be nice.
