Help needed for Mother of Bride dresses

I have a friend (MOB) who had another St. John’s outfit available nearby at the reception in case one of her guests wore the same dress.

Found a gorgeous yellow dress and thought about this thread. Also available in light blue/periwinkle:

I know this is long instead of cocktail length but could work well for a garden wedding: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/eliza-j-beaded-print-chiffon-maxi-dress/3976865?origin=category-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=342

OK, back to work.

I like most of those yellow dresses and I hate yellow!
I think Roske made a good point that many of these dresses are something we would wear as a wedding guest. Something to consider.

^^That’s why I prefer to shop relatively obscure places. I would even check RealReal - there are plenty of almost new or brand new festive dresses.

Sorry, forgot to update. The friend has found a dress. I asked her for a link, but she hasn’t provided it yet. I promise that if I ever get details, you’ll be the first to know!

ETA: Marilyn, you do find some gorgeous dresses!

I am looking to revive this thread since I don’t know where to begin looking for a mother of the bride dress. I have poked around online at some of the places listed , but haven’t seen anything that seems like me…and what’s with all of the models for MOB dresses being in their 20s ?
I think I want something less traditional or dowdy , but I am not built to wear something meant for a 20-30 something either

Give us some more details. Long or short? What time of year in what climate? Certain colors? Certain shape? Blingy or not blingy?

I do think it’s important to get something that feels like YOU. So you have to tell us what YOU likes or doesn’t like!

I myself could not wear the typical MOG dress - it’s just not me! Might as well put me in a Wonder Woman costume! I didn’t overthink it - found a dress I liked, it felt like me, the price was right - DONE!

And to add to what abasket said: what is the targeted price range?

The wedding will be in Coastal southern Maine in the middle of October…so could be chilly or could be decent temps. I am thinking below the knee length , maybe a little bling , but nothing flashy , I prefer sleeves . I am open to colors , although nothing in red tones. Also , nothing that makes me itch via stitching or any other uncomfortable fabric that I can’t wait to take off

Budget unlimited? Cause no offense, as I have seen on CC, you WILL get plenty of expensive suggestions!

My house has budgets for these things, others not so much - either is ok, just helpful to know!

Having been through this last year, with lots of CC advice, one thing that worked for me was ordering dresses online. I found alot more online than I did in the stores. I ordered from places that had free shipping, and either free returns or to return to store. Among the places I ordered from were Nordstrom’s, Bloomies, and L&T. It was easier to try things on at home and I could get feedback from DH and friends.

Try BHLDN–It’s Anthrpologie’s wedding division. My daughter got her wedding dress from them and their MOB selections are pretty nice with many under $500. They don’t have many physical stores for trying on in person, but there’s one in Chestnut Hill near Boston if your Mass-based. You could buy online and exchange via mail, though. Also, poke around on the bride, bridesmaid, party, and sale dress sections. Many of these dresses are cocktail length with finer materials and elegant touches, making them suitable for a wedding.

Good point @abasket , regarding budget. I would go as high as 300 if I found the right dress…my 85 year old mother suggested I get something I can wear again, you know…in case I get asked to the prom
@baseballmom , thanks for that link ! I looked earlier and somehow missed the MOB dresses…I think my friend wore one of those very dresses at her daughter’s wedding last week.
My daughter is getting her dress from Martin McCrea. I am open to suggestions that are non-traditional.
I saw a dress on Sundance that I likes, except it was sleeveless and longer than I prefer , but I might take a closer look

There’s another MOB dress thread right now that you could pillage for info:

Ooh- flashback that this thread got revived!! I did end up lengthening the dress I bought (fortunately it had a 3" hem) and I did lose the 10 lbs… Just 6 months too late :frowning:

But the wedding was fabulous! Hard to believe it was almost 10 mos ago!

Jym626 as mother of the groom in July, I’ve just read every post, linked to every link.
Saw you mentioned losing 10 lbs which I knew you did recently! Thought maybe you were down 20 lbs since wedding,
I tried to link to your dress, but it wasn’t shown, and several other links weren’t current, too.
I was curious about your selection!
