help, OSU VS university of marryland vs stony brook?

hi . i got accepted for mechanical engineering from these schools. and planning to do my master degree somewhere else if possible. OSU has acceptance rate is a lot higher than the rest, but their reputation and ranking seems like about the same as marryland, i am not sure about stony brook, ranked pretty low, but the reputation seems pretty decent? i heard it has bad campus life, though, i am not really concerned with that since it’s one hour driving from NYC. The thing worries me is that OSU has like 50k undergraduates, (while the other two has around 25k,) i wonder if that number is going to effect anything compare to 25k, i mean both numbers are huge since they are public schools, numbers might not even matters at this amount?plus OSU is a huge school too. it seems like marryland got a lot of activities around the students, even though it is in a suburban area?

these are my personal views, waiting to hear any suggestions or opinions.

Don’t know much about Stony Brook, but I consider tOSU and Maryland to be academically equal in terms of student:faculty ratio. However, the word on the street has Maryland currently suffering from budget shortfall and its athletic departments are in deficit as well. OTOH, tOSU is currently up-and-coming and destined to be one of the Top-10 Public institutions by 2020. Also, tOSU offers National Buckeye Scholarship to the OOS, one of the very few public to do so in the nation. Lastly, academically speaking, its Mechanical Engineering Dept is higher regard than Maryland, and its overall PA score is 2 points above UMD based on USNWR.

Best of Luck & Go Bucks!! :)

Geographic diversity (Columbus campus, autumn 2011)
Ohio State enrolls students from every state and territory. States with the highest enrollment:

500+: Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York, California, Michigan
300 – 499: Texas, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia
100 – 299: Florida, Indiana, Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Utah, Minnesota, Missouri, Arizona, Tennessee, Connecticut
50 – 99: West Virginia, Washington, Colorado, South Carolina, Kansas

That’s actually a very tough decision I’d be stuck too. Email each school about whatever specific things you find important and find out which schools have the closest thing to what your looking for. For what it is worth rankings wise OSU and U of maryland are tied for 17th best public university haha. I think maryland has the strongest engineering department of the three schools.

Good luck. Me personally id probably go, 1. OSU/UMD 2. Stony Brook

Stony Brook has a great reputation, just less of a national reputation due to lack of big time sports (though they have a great baseball team this year!!).

Maryland and OSU both have lots of school spirit and I’m sure you can get a great education at either one.

By teh way, do not let student population (OSU) discourage you. I transferred from a school with 6000 students to a Big Ten School (40,000) and it was fine and easy to make friends. The school is only as big as your circle of friends (doesn’t matter if it is 10,000 or 40,000!!)

Good luck.

Are all these schools OOS for you? Were you offered any merit scholarships or aid?

Are you instate for any of them? If so, which one.

If you’re instate for one and finances are an issue, then go to the instate school if it’s cheaper.

However, if you’re affluent and money is no object, then choose the one you like best.

You mention that you’re an int’l. Did you get your green card? If so, then a NY public would be a lot cheaper for you. What is your family saying? Are they willing to pay for an OOS public?

Agree with crazed!!

Also, please make note that tOSU’s home to Mechanical Engineering (Scott Laboratory) Dept is a state-of-the-art facility!!!

Go Bucks!! :)

that’s some nice buildings ! are you a student at OSU?

that’s sad, cuz i don’t really care much for big time sports, i mean i like almost every sports, i just don’t go crazy for specific sport such as football. Thank you for your suggestion about the numbers. i might just go to OSU, (got an old classmate over there) the funny thing is, both of them are 6 hours driving from me.

haha, i think you are the one replied my post back in 2010. OSU and UMD are OOS for me, though my parents are paying for me.

Every student at tOSU isn’t into big time sports. It’s fine not to be. That said, I would recommend attending at least one home football game…attending a home game at a Big Div I school will have an entertainment factor that goes well beyond the actual sport…the music, the band, the baton twirlers, dancers, etc.

"attending a home game at a Big Div I school will have an entertainment factor that goes well beyond the actual sport…the music, the band, the baton twirlers, dancers, etc…future losses to Michigan. :-)

^^ @rjk, Take away the 2010 win (vacated), the record for the last 10 games is still lopsided in favor of Ohio State 8 : 2 Michigan. Not to mention this year’s game will be held in C-bus… :D

Here is the awesome new addition for Michigan the mechanical engineering department at the number 2 progam according to USNWR. TOSU will never catch up! lol ;-)

Thanks for the link, rjk!!

What?? No way!! Only 46-million?? lol~ No wonder Michigan’s Mechanical Engineering program is in decline, dropping ranking from #2 to now #5 in the nation. :p

TOSU’s Scott Laboratory cost $72.5 million in 2008. As its Dean pointed out that based on today’s construction cost, it would have cost over $100-million to complete the project (consider tOSU fortunate in funding; named for alumni Peter and Claire Scott who donated $10 million).

Here is another example of current tOSU engineering related facility construction, CBEC ($126-million), with completion date also by 2014.

[OSU CBEC Animation - YouTube](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33BZzxf-v9Q)

“What?? No way!! Only 46-million?? No wonder Michigan’s Mechanical Engineering program is in decline, dropping ranking from #2 to now #5 in the nation.”

The U-M ME is consistently ranked among the top five mechanical engineering programs nationwide by the US News and World Report. In the recent National Research Council (NRC) assessment of U.S. PhD programs, U-M ME earned exceptional marks, leading to an overall #2 ranking among large institutions by the website PhDs.org, using their default weightings on the NRC data:
http://graduate-school.phds.org/rankings/mechanical-engineering/rank/larger</a></p>

It is at #4 Sparkeye for undergrad. Once again, WAY WAY higher ranked than tOSU. You see Sparkeye, Michigan is near the top of the food chain for a myriad of disciplines. There isn’t really much room for it go up in most of it’s offerings. TOSU however, has tons of room for improvement. Good for them. It’s nice to see a middling B1G school trying so hard to compete with the big boys. Btw, the 46 million dollar project is ONLY an addition to a much larger building.

@rjk,

I reckon that Michigan’s Engineering programs in general are highly regarded than tOSU!! However, by 2020, additional (30% of the 300 = 90) new faculty hires will be added to the College of Engineering at tOSU I read, excluding the annual 250 faculties hire due to normal attrition.

Indeed and it’s exciting!! Thanks!! :)

ok. In addition to Scott Lab, there are numerous other labs associated with the Department of Mechanical Engineering including the Gas Turbine Lab and the nationally renowned Center for Automotive Research (CAR).

P.S. I also read that there is going to be another major $250-million construction projection plan for the College of Engineering to replace its “main building” in 2016 with completion date set for 2020. *The $100-million benefactor for the College of Engineering at tOSU is secured, and the announcement should be made public soon!!
