Then why not take it Senior year and Spanish this year? Just so there’s no break.
@Sportsball would the current preferences be something like the following?

Seems like the only immediate (11th grade) decision may be if he is interested enough in Mandarin to want to get to the year 4 course, in which case he may want to take Mandarin 3 in 11th grade and defer computer science to 12th grade.
I’d have to ask him that. My thought is that if it turns out he loves the CS class, he would have another year to take another CS class. But I don’t actually know his thinking.
I ask a million questions here, because I find this whole thing incredibly fascinating, and I want to be ready if he asks my opinion. But with my kids I tend to let them take the lead, and wait for them to ask my opinion, if they choose to do so.
I’m glad you pointed that out - about letting them take the lead - I was thinking otherwise but you’re just wanting to learn and I appreciate that.
Many of us are similar…maybe not on course selection but other things college - which is why we are here.
I learn something almost ever day.
He did a couple things last summer, and he’s looking at some local programs for this summer. It’s his brother’s last summer before college, and they’ve decided they want to both stay home and hang out together most of the summer. One of the reasons why he wants to take a college course math course this summer instead of next, is to keep the option of doing something away from home for the summer before Senior year.
He’s thinking of doing the math class this summer.
Otherwise, yes, that’s right. He’ll probably take a few more AP exams. He is the only person I know who likes standardized testing.
Some kids like video games. Or sports.
Yours seems to like academic torture ![]()
Bet he’ll be good if he’s ever a contestant on Jeopardy!!
TBH, at this point, I’d just let him take what he wants, so long as it’s relatively balanced across subjects. He’s done a good job so far.
He’s so advanced in many subjects, I don’t see a situation where any AO will say, “We would have admitted him if he took Mandarin instead.”
Actually my youngest daughter loved standardized testing, was sad when she was done with her SAT’s/ACT’s. She was a finance major, accounting and math minors, and is an actuary.
It’s nice to know he isn’t alone!
Does she like being an actuary? It seems like a really interesting career.
She’s only been working about 6 months but she loves her job and is learning so much (she is working where she did her internship junior year). She can work from home whenever she wants, works in NJ but can work from the manhattan office, when she has tests scheduled they give a day off each week to study, gets an automatic increase in salary with each passed exam.
