Hi,
College Confidential was a hugely helpful resource for my children, and I’ve returned in hopes it can help a friend and her family.
My friend’s sister died unexpectedly, two nieces. The father lives abroad and is no longer in the picture, so my friend assumed legal guardianship of her nieces. At the time I had done some preliminary research, and it seemed like at least some colleges would not consider my friend’s income and assets in her niece’s financial aid calculations (as this would be a big burden to her household).
Since that time my friend has been looking at year-long, post-graduate programs at boarding schools for her older niece, as the disruption of the loss of her mom and moving households and schools impacted her junior year class rigor. But preliminary outreach to boarding schools suggests the vast majority of them would consider my friend’s income and assets in any calculations, making them too expensive to consider.
Any advice as to whether there are boarding programs that might be more able to help? Or is there a financial aid guru who could offer advice? Not sure what to do if the post-graduate year ceases to be an option. All advice helpful and thank you!
