Help with cloudy glass drinking glasses

We have a Bosch dishwasher and are using Cascade Platinum dishwashing packets. Our glasses are having extreme hardwater filming on all the glasses so that they always appear cloudy. H tried soaking one of the glasses in vinegar overnight but the film still persists. We have tried using lemony shine and other remedies but can’t figure out how to prevent etching in future glassware if we dump all of these glasses and buy new ones.

Also, would appreciate any tips on how to fix the etching so that these glasses won’t look so cloudy any more. The plastics are fine, as are the stoneware and flatware. We are very disappointed in this dishwasher and the Cascade, needless to say.

We have tried Finish Powerball as well, but that didn’t do any better for us. We do have hard water, that has a lot of minerals which are deposited on glassware.

Don’t know if this will work for you but I’ve successfully gotten rid of some very bad film on glasses and vases using a bit of Oxyclean. Worked great.

thanks–other suggestions?

We use Cascade and have a Kenmore portable dishwasher that has a hot air dry.
Haven’t seen any problems.
Perhaps your water isn’t getting hot enough?
Do you have hard water?

yes, we have hard water

How about the Cascade with Dawn packets?

Permanent etching is often caused by a combination of soft water and excessive heat or detergent. If glassware is permanently etched, there isn’t anything you can do to make it clear again. But you can avoid future etching by taking these steps:

1) Be sure hot water entering the dishwasher is no hotter than 140 degrees F. Don’t use extra-hot settings such as “Power Scrub,” and use the “Energy Saver” dry cycle.

2) Adjust the detergent amount.

3) Don’t pre-rinse your dishes before loading them in the dishwasher. Food particles on the dishes actually help the detergent and drying agents clean better. (I actually saw a Bosch video that said exactly this.)

I use Quantum Finish

^^I cut the tablet in half and it works well. YMMV

I’ve never heard of soft water causing
Problems, just hard.

I had the same problem when they banned phospate from detergent. I was using Cascade. I switched to Quantum Finish. No more issues.

You can still get the phosphate type detergent on Restockit.com

I had the same problem as Iglooo. Cloudy glasses.

The phosphates were taken out in 2010. Tough to think that this is suddenly causing Himoms problems unless she had a huge stash of old DW detergent ;))

However that is what caused almost everyones cloudy glasses.

It doesn’t sound like etching though since she has hard water.

I had a set of nice drinking glasses that always seemed to come out cloudy no matter what kind of detergent I used. I had to scrub them manually - what a pain. Finally, I got a new set at Costco, and they are always shiny and clear, yet I still use the same DW and finish capsules. They look like this and double as wine glasses (made by same maker): http://m.costco.com/Luigi-Bormioli-Allegro-Stemless-Wine-Tumbers%2C-Set-of-12.product.100031579.html

Are your glasses etched or do they get covered with hard to remove film?

I pour some white vinegar in around the bottom of the dishwasher around once a week and haven’t had that problem since.

We also have a Bosch dishwasher and hard water. About once a month I use Dishwasher Magic Cleaner/Disinfectant and I also clean out the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher (many Bosch models have this filter which must be cleaned manually). My mom has the same dishwasher and had no idea she was supposed to clean it! Seems to work for us - dishes and plates look great and our dishwasher is 7 years old. The detergent that I use is the Finish powerballs.

We also have a Bosch. We use cheap dishwasher powder. And we pour that liquid stuff in the little reservoir. Our glasses are as clear as can be.

Agree with others…there is a huge difference between film and etching.

Used to have a chandelier cleaner that came in a spray bottle, and judging from the smell of it contained mostly ammonia. It worked very well (you’d spray it on and let it drip off). Perhaps try soaking the glasses in some water with ammonia added to it? And rinse a ton, obviously! Just a thought…

I was having a terrible time with this, and started adding a product called Lemi-Shine to my dishwasher. It went in the detergent compartment and I would put a Finish Powerball in the bottom of the machine. Made a huge difference in the glasses and flatware, BUT… I have several coffee mugs I’ve bought over the years from vacations, etc. and the artwork on them faded and disappeared and the measurements on my favorite Pyrex measuring cup got washed away too. I was buying the Lemi-Shine in Target, but they no longer seem to carry it. I find if I’m diligent about keeping the rinse aid compartment filled with Jet-Dry that helps.

Thanks for all the feedback. It is very discouraging. The clouding/filming is worse all the time. Fortunately, the plastic, stoneware, and flatware, as well as pots & pans are fine in the dishwasher. Lemi shine didn’t do anything. We had tried Finish previously, as my SisIL swears by it, but it doesn’t seem to be good for us.

Remember there are different grades of a given brand of detergent. Finish Quantum has a rinse aid, other Finish products may not. Likewise with Cascade products. You need to know the exact product used.
