Help with cloudy glass drinking glasses

Here is some good info (in plain English, I promise!):

“Also, the tech told us not to use too much detergent. Don’t fill the cup or follow the directions on the box; use about 1/2 that much (up to a tablespoon or so).”

Yep.

Same for HE washing machines. Don’t use recommended amount.

Well, we bought the ones from Costco that are guaranteed for life to not discolor. We shall see–our local store is great about returns. H is ready to pitch all our discolored glassware already.

I have read many places mention that it can be a good idea to use less of the powdered dish detergent than recommended but what about the tablets. Are these also too much detergent? Should I routinely be using only half of them? The can be cut in half but they are very hard and therefore difficult to cut.

When I called Bosch, the person on the line gave me the party line which is not to cut them and use only half.

I like the tablets because they work well and in the past, I had less than wonderful results with the powders and found much better results with the tablets. I hate that they are more expensive but they do work quite well.

My SisIL does cut the Finish tablets in half and use them for her dishes. She doesn’t worry about which half the ball is in.

Make sure you are using the Quantum Finish tabs and not just the regular Finish tabs. We found a big difference and when we lived in a very hard water area, we also used liquid Jetdry in addition to the tabs.

Don’t know about Bosch but with Miele, the tech did recommend cutting the tabs in half.

I had this problem but I had been lazy about adding a rinse aid and then I switched to the Finish Powerballs that include a rinse aid and they gradually cleared all the glass. I have a cheap Kenmore. I wonder if it is the glass composition or some setting of your dishwasher. What about clear plastics? Do they get cloudy?

I had this happen to me a few years ago. You might be dealing with a lot of build up, which can resemble etching. It can take some time to get completely rid of it. In addition to a cup of vinegar run through a cycle a few times, I would try running the machine through several cycles of Dishwasher Magic. Then once a month with the Dishwasher Magic and/or just add a few drops of it to your main detergent compartment each time. I only use this product occasionally now, for maintenance. Also make sure to keep the rinse aid dispenser filled regularly with Jet Dry.

I also switched to the Finish, first the powerball and now the Quantum gel pacs and have never had a repeat of the issue. I believe Finish is recommended by Bosch for use in its machines.

Someone upthread mentioned LemiShine. This really worked for me when I had the same problem. Just sprinkl some into the bottom of the washer or on the inside of the door. It did clear up some of the glasses that were cloudy. Carried by Walmart, Meier and Krogers in my area.
