Help with School Recommendations for a Junior

Hi! I am currently a junior, rising senior, and still do not know where to apply. I am looking for a medium or large school in a city with good weather. Also, I like school spirit and good academics, but I do not want to spend all my time studying. I plan to major in marketing and minor in a language course. I do not want to share my stats lol.

So far I am considering: Tulane, UMiami, UT, Wake, and USC.

If you have anymore recommendations let me know! I would also appreciate if you recommend safety schools for me :).

I always seem to reply to questions like this with the same answer. Finding out the family budget is crucial. What is your family willing, and able, to afford? Many private schools will run $300K for 4 years, out of state publics may not offer enough aid. What is your home state? We need to know if you need financial aid, will be chasing merit, or are one of the lucky few who truly have an unlimited budget. Without sharing your stats, it is extremely hard to provide any meaningful guidance. A 4.0 UW, 4.0 W, and 3.65 offer vastly different options.

Lots of very knowledgeable folks here would love to offer suggestions but without anything to go on, you may not get anything that helps you.

University of Richmond, Loyola Marymount.

It can be hard to make reasonable recommendations without knowing your relevant stats. Or what your family can afford, as another poster has pointed out.

Not knowing anything about your stats or ability to pay, Texas Christian University or Southern Methodist University might be worth a look.

Also, which USC do you refer to? University of Southern California or the University of South Carolina?

Which UT? University of Texas or University of Tennessee?

Hard to make decent suggestions without stats.

Based on the assumption that your stats could be low since you do not want to share them, your likely admissions safeties are your local open admission community colleges if they offer a transfer path to a nearby in-state public university. However, this also assumes that you can afford them (commuting from your parents’ place is a common way to save on costs, so look at your local in-state public universities).

Of course, if you have low stats, come from a lower income family, live in a state with poor in-state financial aid, and live in a remote area that makes commuting to a suitable community college and university impractical, then you may not have any safeties at all.

Not a safety, but based upon your other choices, Clemson?

it’s a silly question to ask if you won’t provide stats.

I’ll assume they’re low relative to others - and so what - they are your stats.

If you have a 24 ACT for example and a 3.2, I’d recommend U of Tampa.

You have to provide a basis for us to use - otherwise you aren’t getting any advice you can use.

University of Tampa will work if this students family can pay about $45,000 a year for college. Can they?

Are these affordable?

So far you have received some great suggestions (TCU, SMU, & Univ. of Richmond) which have much in common with Tulane, UMIami, WFU, & USC (Southern Cal).

However,I do not agree with or understand the suggestion of the Univ. of Tampa which has a poor retention rate & is not similar to your list of targeted schools other than the type of weather.

With respect to safety schools, consider the College of Charleston (but I only recommend the honors college at C of C) and Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida.

Others that may not satisfy your desire for warm Southern weather, but match in other ways are the University of Denver and Miami University of Ohio.

Additionally, consider the University of San Diego and the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The suggestion is based on she won’t provide stats or anything. For all we know her list of elite schools is far off.

So i went to the lowest common denominator.

There’s no reason to answer the question until she lets us know her desires and most importantly her stats.

Thank you for your response explaining your recommendation.

I’m okay with OP withholding stats since the OP shared a list of target schools (Tulane, UMiami, WFU, & USC) and stated several preferences (weather, school spirit, social life, and good academics) as well as intended area of study (marketing & foreign language).

The student may not even have SAT/ACT stats this year, and for many schools, that’s ok.

USC is very expensive. Expect to pay, at least, $72k per year.

Have your parents given you a budget?

You can’t rely on scholarships and grants to pay for your schooling. Everybody pays something.

Apply to your in-state public universities just to have a back up.

Yes, but are those reaches/stretches, etc.

We don’t know.

So it’d be helpful to know - otherwise we can give every school in Florida, etc.

We don’t know rigor, GPA…nothing.

btw - Tampa gave my kid $17K…she’s not going…it was #17 of 17 acceptances…but you can go for under $30K.

Some students have unrealistic target lists (where their “safeties” are actually reaches), so we do not know if the OP’s stats put those schools in reasonable range for the OP. And many more have not had the money talk with their parents, or have parents who are avoiding the money talk.
