Help with unusual roommate issue.

@Madison85 You’re nuts

I guess I would want to know what if anything the friends son is saying or doing once the roommate starts entertaining himself. Is he ignoring it, leaving the room or telling him to stop? Also I wonder if the roommate perhaps shared a room with brothers and they just went ahead and did this on a regular basis? Maybe the roommate thinks it’s normal?

I had a roommate that thought nothing of having sex with her boyfriend in our dorm room while the other 3 of us were there trying to sleep(yes all of us shared 1 room). We never said anything to her we just all tried to ignore it. So looking back at it she probable thought it was ok with us(which it wasn’t).

My husband feels the same way. Unfortunately, the bedroom door opens inward. And unfortunately, I was standing right behind the closed door, about to open the door and leave the room, when he decided to open it without warning.

Ouch.

I think “knock-and-enter” is entirely appropriate. You don’t have to wait for a response, but a warning knock seems about right.

Same thing happened to me. I was able to tell everyone who asked “my husband did this to me.” Now he knocks.
I’ve seen some dorms that were so small that being anywhere in the room other than in bed put you in the range of the door being opened.

Consider suggesting to your friend that his son sees how the roommate responds to a certain song by the Divinyls…

Maybe the son could organize a group of friends to start singing that song whenever they see his roommate and follow him everywhere he goes…like being his own theme song group.

First of all, knock until the situation is solved. There is no reason not to knock, especially when any activity the roommate doesn’t approve of witnessing is going on.

Second of all, it is completely fine to ask someone to take care of that kind of business in the bathroom. That’s what I tell my kids - I don’t care if you touch yourself, but wash your hands before and after, and do that in your bathroom or your own bedroom. Some of my kids have shared bedrooms, and they were told not to do that in their bedroom therefore.

Let’s take the “oooh, sexual” part out of it, and make it 100% a hygiene issue. I would not want someone scratching their azz in my bedroom. I would not want someone leaving toe nail clippings in my bedroom. And I don’t want bodily fluids around my bedroom, of any sort.

The comparison of the depression of free will due to having to knock on your own bedroom door vs. walking in on someone “busy” with that activity is a no-brainer. Knock.

Some couples will knock on their bedroom door if it is closed, before they enter. That is polite. If you have a roommate, it is polite to knock in my mind, and the “right to not have to knock on my own door” ends when it is someone else’s door too.

It is certainly more common for someone to arrive home “unexpected” and catch their roommate and a “friend” banging. Then you learn to knock, if it bothers you. There are many threads about “chill, you expect college students to be abstinent?” defending at least occasional use of a shared room for sexual activity. And I think that is gross.

Oh my god the innuendo in this thread

I was also going to suggest Weird Al’s “The White Stuff”*, parody of NKOTB’s “The Right Stuff”.

However, I’m not sure OP’s friend’s son’s friends would be willing to lower themselves to singing even a parody of a boyband song. Especially if they feel boy bands are exceedingly cheesy like yours truly and most male classmates in HS/college.

  • This innuendo didn't even occur to me as a 17 year old college freshman when a classmate borrowed my Weird Al CD to annoy his older sister who was a big NKOTB fan over one winter break. Took a 19 year old fellow freshman roommate to bring up and point that out to me.

I mean to make such jokes to somebody faced with this problem makes you all jerks.

This is why Mom wanted me to wash my hands before dinner? Too late now, I guess.

I see what you did there @awesomepolyglot

OH MY GOSH

@2muchquan: #60: Now THAT is going to get this thing shut down.

That vid was equal parts hilarious and gross at the same time!

Cum on you guys, you’re not taking this seriously.
