Mine’s just 14 and there are no drivers ed permits until 15.5, so we’ve got a while before we go through the drivers ed routine.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you teaching your young drivers!

In Florida, teens can get their learner’s permit at 15 (after passing a written test and 4 hour drug and alcohol test). For the first three months, they can only learn from dawn to dusk (with a licensed driver over 21). After that, they can learn from I think 6 AM - 11PM. When they get their license at 16 (assuming they pass the road test)they have a conditional license to drive from 6 AM -11 PM only (unless they are coming to/from work). At 17, the driving curfew ends at 1 AM. They can be ticketed and possibly lose their permit if they are caught driving after this hour. It becomes a full license at 18 years old.

I like the “one year of practice driving with a permit before you get a license” rule. Six months does not seem long enough.

Okay–I’m joining, but only provisionally. DS#1 (hs class of '08) just finished his first year at college (hooray!). DS#2 was class of '10 but had a tough year and is now class of '11. DS#3 is class of '12. . . as long as he doesn’t follow in DS#2’s footsteps.

DS#3 is thankfully the oldest of mine in the school year so got his learner’s two weeks ago. I am counting the months until he can drive on his own. Agree with seiclan that I’d forgotten how stressful the teaching part can be (you have to pay attention to EVERYTHING) but I’m tired of being the chauffeur.

P.S. I’ll take white wine, thank you.

My nephew drove my sister and younger nephew to our house for Father’s Day…younger nephew asked if my sister would drive home…she was ready for wine when she arrived. The combination of a new driver and a siblings comments were enough to drive her over the edge! I’m glad DD won’t be able to get a learner’s permit until January (she has to be 15.5) no liscense until next July (16)…but after the hour round trip to drop her off at her summer CIT, I’ll be glad to no longer chauffeur.

DD just finished her first yr of hs. What an experience. She loved/hated it and is now in summer school. I promised to take her to the beach at least 2 times a week. She’s ready to drive but has to wait until Jan. '10 for permit. I’m ready for her to drive!
DS ('10) has his permit. At the DMV, I asked him if he had studied the driver’s handbook - his reply, “what handbook?”

How is everyone’s summer? With July almost over, I put the PSAT study manual on son’s desk - did you hear him screaming!?! LOL We made the deal he can self study for PSAT this October, we shall see. I hope he truly is smart enough to pick up the book once in a while and dust around it this August…

School starts 3 weeks from tomorrow. My daughter gets home from camp just a few days before that. Summer has flown by.

I seem to be the only one in the house who hears the summer clock ticking away…Grapes of Wrath is not color coded (7 different colors of highlighter required), so no essays are started. AP Euro has not been read. On the other hand, she’s done 50+ hours of community service, is wrapping up her Leadership Award for Girl Scouts, will be career shadowing a friend next month, has biology camp next week. I’m sure it will all get done…

Any kind of wine is ok with me. I also like chocholate. My D is a CIT this summer too; Has read a couple of books, but not the assigned reading (yet). We’re all playing some tennis this summer, which is fun. I am not looking forward to the learning to drive experience - we took a small motor boat out in June, and I had visions of crashing into some expensive yachts. Truth be told, by the end of the 2 hours she could drive the boat. Does experience driving a golf cart help??? Like cherryhillmom’s son, she has not even looked inside the PSAT book. Bye for now…

Sooo, now there are just a few weeks until school starts, and although I am trying to get everything organized, I have found that I already have missed the order deadline for team spirit wear for tennis. I can’t reach the transportation coordinator for the bus (last year’s bus letter is dated Aug. 1, but who knows when I really got it). I am not ready for the feel of the house when there are tests, papers, deadlines…you know. Why can’t summer just go on and on?

My son finished up his CIT job/community service today. He helped out the counselors at a not for profit camp. He really enjoyed the kids (ages 3 and 4)and got over 160 service hours for it. He starts 10th grade on the 24th of August and he is not looking forward to it. He has been on his xbox since he got home today at 3:30 pm. I will give him one more day then he goes back to video game time restrictions.

DD1 starting GS at the end of the month. DS leaves in 19 days, DD2 is in the high school class of 2011 and DD3 is in the high school class of 2012. Whew! Any kind of wine will do!

I am going to ask this question…Does anyone have a short list yet?

My DS isn’t into it yet (unlike his mom who has already gone through this twice already). He knows only that he wants to go to college and that he would like it to be somewhat prestigious. He says he would like to leave the state (Florida) but, I heard that twice before and both his sisters decided to stay in Florida. I believe that UF and UM will be on his short list (although it is way too soon to tell). I don’t know if he can get the SAT scores that he would need for the out of state colleges that he might be interested in (Penn, Vanderbilt, Emory, Duke, Wash U). We will see how he does academically this year and how his practice PSAT goes in October.

This is our second time around. D1 had a difficult time. D2 is a lot more cautious about “loving” a school.

I hear ya. D1 had quite the heartbreak when she was rejected from her ED school. I wonder if DS remembers that trauma (3 years ago).?

We don’t go back to school here in CA until Sept. 8th although one of DD’s private school friend starts next Monday. DD is visiting Grandma (lives 100 miles away) this week for some fun shopping, getting nails done and just hanging out. She spent two weeks showing her horse at Pebble Beach in hunter/jumpers and was very successful. We rented a house with the other families who had girls showing in Carmel and had a fun time. I was only there the first week because of work, but DD stayed with the other families for a few days before DH came to watch her show the second week.

Now she has decided that she wants to go to school and compete horses at the NCAA level. She spent lots of time with a girl from her barn that just finished her freshman year at Texas A&M and told DD how much fun she is having riding for the college. I reminded DD that she needs to pick her college based on what she wants to study first and riding second.
I don’t know if I got this through to her 15 year old brain!

We start school on Thursday. My daughter got home from Mathcamp yesterday, so this will be a very quick transition (pacific time to central time, not sleeping the last few days of camp to school schedule, etc.).

My daughter doesn’t have a short list. She has 20+ schools on a rough list of possibilities. It’s still so early yet.
