Wow, look at the above list. We have a lot of CC parents of rising sophomores!
My son started his CIT job on Wednesday so now he only plays Xbox 8 hours a day instead of 12! Incremental progress.
He has yet to look at anything school related and scoffed at my idea of his practicing for the “practice PSAT” in October.

hmm, can we have chocolate with the wine? (i don’t like wine, love chocolate :-)

We are still in school, last day of finals is tomorrow—she has Algebra 2H and BioH on the same day, just for fun…I will be glad when she’s done!

My son had Alg 2 H and BioH on same day too. He overestimated himself on the math final… I should have banned Xbox during finals week. Shoulda/woulda/coulda?

DD is enjoying her first week of summer. She has been riding her horse everyday this week and yesterday went to the fair with her friends. I reminded her that next week she needs to clean her room and clean up the little piles of her stuff around the house that have accumulated since before finals began.

I also reminded both her and her sister (senior in hs) that I would leave a list of cleaning that I wanted each of them to do for me every week. They “owe” me half an hour per day of work! They can do a half hour each day or do it all in one day just as long as it gets done!

We are trying to get my son’s “in class” driver’s ed training done before our trip to visit the grandmas at the end of July. Fitting these three-hour classes in around sports, math class, and his mission trip are the challenge. We sure want him to finish - or nearly finish - the behind-the-wheel part of driver’s ed before school starts in August.

Mom2Mom - hmmm… Chocolate. Chocolate’s good too. I like Chocolate!

Seiclan - Tried to limit the gaming too! Then he spent at least 15 min determining he only needed a 16 on the science exam to get an A. Now if I had limited the gaming, he wouldn’t have received an 89 in a stupid elective! Does extreme gaming count towards EC?

Showmom - Hear ya! Made him carry in the grocery sacks! Torture…

Midwestmom - maybe Mom2Mom’s idea of chocolate is better. We can not have wine and teach driving! on second thought, we really will need the wine! Have fun with this, stressful I’m sure, but how empowering for them!

Remembering the stress of riding in the car when my now-19 daughter was first learning to drive on freeways, maybe a tequila tasting club would be good. (Are there enough different kinds of tequila?)

cherryhillmom, we need to start researching video game scholarships. Is there a table somewhere that shows how much scholarship money you get for each level you defeat? (I can dream, can’t I?)

It is so nice that finals are over and the kids get a break from homework now.

Hoping there are more 2012 parents reading who will chime in occasionally. I have a feeling there are way more than 27 of us here :)

I really have to look into the Driver’s Ed situation. Dd won’t turn 16 until next summer, but getting some of the classroom requirements done this summer sounds like a good plan. I’ll have to check our DMV regulations and see how far in advance that can be done. Thanks for the good idea!

Just got home from taking DS to his summer “job”…or rather, his taking me. I am getting too old for this. I was good with DD1, marginal with DD2, but I am a real white knuckle passenger with my DS. He has had his permit for 2 1/2 months now and I am not getting better. Today we drove in “mild rush hour traffic” and I couldn’t keep my mouth shut. This was me this morning: "Watch him, slow down, speed up, careful, go…go…GO NOW…NOOOO, too late, have to wait for the next light! I am too old for this. But how will he get practice if I don’t let him drive?

I have been known to grab D1’s steering wheel at a moment of panic. D2, class of 2012, has told me it’s not acceptable. I think I am taking her out this Sat morning.

if we keep all the off topic stuff to this cafe thread, how will we inflate our post count in our main thread ? I don’t come over to the cafe too often, so will probably only check in occasionally and miss all the good discussions.

driving- nine months to go before my D can drive, fine with me. My older is a fairly new licensed driver and she does fine but it not relaxing going with her, she usually goes places on her own or we drive her.

Big news for us is she leaves on Sunday for a trip to hike the Grand Canyon and other areas in AZ. She is travelling with another girl from a nearby state out there. First trip where she hasn’t known anyone ahead of time she has done other trips with local groups. I hope she had a great time and does ok with the elevation and the physical exertion! She would do ok in milder weather, it is the heat and elevation she is not used to.

My class of 2012 just turned 15 last week so no driving for her until December! My 17 year old DD was easy to teach to drive and is a decent teenage driver. My 15 year old is the one I am a little worried about. She rides her horse well and jumps him up to 3’6", and pays attention well when she is in the ring, but is not so attentive in the rest of her life! I am hoping she will want to wait until next summer to get the permit when she will have much more time to practice.

DD can’t get a Driver’s Liscense until next summer (she won’t be 16 until next year), but she can do the required classroom hours after she turns 15, so she can get it done at the end of this summer–yeah! She has a full schedule next year, plus all the EC stuff, it’s just easier to find the hours during the summer.
