High School Class of 2014

I’m visiting Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY this comin weekend and Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. Has anybody been to either?

@ecouter I’m applying to UPenn ED. I’m probably not getting in, but it’s the perfect school for many reasons. Only do ED or SCEA to schools you know you will enjoy once accepted.

Indigo, if you don’t mind. Could you explain what you liked about UPenn’s campus. Does it feel big? How nice were the facilities? Is there a lot of green space for students to enjoy?

You guys are more aware of this kind of stuff than I am… Is there any point in me retaking the ACT again to raise it from a 32? A 32 isn’t an amazing score by any means, but I have my doubts that bringing it up to a 34 would make that much of a difference. Also, would it be a good idea to take SAT? I haven’t actually taken one yet, though I have taken the PSAT with no studying or motivation and got a 198.

Basically I’m stressing over the few things I can improve on my application now. GPA is set, ECs are basically set, all that’s left are essays and test scores. I know a 32 wouldn’t hurt me, but it won’t exactly help me either when it comes to merit aid at lesser ranked schools and admissions at higher ranked schools.

Penn is an awesome school! Yeah, it’s just that I don’t honestly know what I want. All the schools seem ‘cool’ on paper for me, and while there are differences in core curriculum/flexibility/culture, I can’t get a 100% feel on them. Like I automatically rule out colleges with heavy drinking cultures, and I don’t really think I’ll like another school I have on my list (cost + lack of flexibility + location) but beyond that, it’s more a feel thing you know?

SCEA is a safer bet than ED because you can back out. I want to visit a few places to get things more concrete.

I took the ACT to raise it from a 33, and I don’t regret it. I got a 35.

Sure it is. The average score is like, 21 or something.

Yes.

Retake the ACT if you feel you can improve. Even a 33 would put your score in the 99th percentile. Try the free SAT on the college board site to see if it’s worth studying for.

“Sure it is. The average score is like, 21 or something.”

Not amazing by CC standard I mean. And more importantly, not amazing when compared to the other highly ranked applicants out there.

Anyways the consensus seems to be to take the SAT and retake the ACT. I think I can improve on the ACT, even though I took it twice and got a 32 both times. I didn’t study for either, but I will this time, and now I have a little more pressure on me (which is a good thing for me when I take tests).

Am I the only one who thinks complaining about a 32 ACT is little weird?

I’m not complaining, but I mean there is definitely room for improvement. I came here to ask if going up a point, possibly more, would really be worth it, and everyone seemed to think it was…

I realize a 32 isn’t going to hurt me at all, but it isn’t going to wow any adcoms either.

If I got a 32 on the ACT I think ill die of excitement before any college accepts me :D

I’m not sure what the best conditions for working for me are. Alone, I get distracted. People make noise, I get distracted. Near any technology, I get distracted.

I kind of just…do.

Hey emmiehow, i can give you info on both areas. I visited oneonta and live in newburgh

@000Chet A 32 is WAY above average. A 30+ ACT would wow any adcom.

It’s whatever though.

^ It would wow most adcoms, but not the selective ones that are used to seeing 30+.

^
And they’re not going to be impressed by a 36 either.

The only thing that would impress them would be a 40+. That would really impress them. Otherwise you have no chance.

Yeah, you need a 40 out of 36. Of course. Why didn’t I think of that?! Har har

@quidditchcat, 40 PLUS. 40 is at the lower end. 45 is definitely where it’s at. Anything below 40 and I’m afraid your chances are looking dismal…

If you really want to wow an adcom, get sub-scores of 36/36/1/1. That’ll make them say wow.
