High School Class of 2014

^ For matches you can look at schools where the weakest part of your application is still average to above average compared to the rest of the applicants.

Going back to the dreams topic, I think I had my first actual dream about anything college-related yesterday. Some kid from my school asked me where I was applying and of course I said “I don’t know but Princeton is gonna be my backup school for sure” lol…

Anyway I think I have finally settled on a list of 2 safeties, 3 matches and 4 reaches, and Princeton is nowhere to be found on that list.

I’ve decided to enter Intel and Siemens.

I am both excited and scared s***less. Haha. Ha. ha…

^^ I’m in a similar situation, my ACT/GPA is at about the 50-75 percentile for all my reaches. My “matches” are basically schools where admissions is pretty likely, but financial aid/scholarships are competitive (e.g. Case Western, RPI), while my safeties are places where I’m guaranteed admissions and significant scholarships (e.g. University of Arizona).

Is it true that colleges review your application based on your choice of major? Like you’re more likely to get in a school with one major than another?

Sorry I’m still a rookie on this college app process and I didn’t know where else to ask.

@romeo for some schools, usually bigger state schools, certain majors are more competitive and it matters what you pick. for most, it doesn’t matter and you don’t need to declare a major as an applicant

Has anybody not taken their SAT/ACT’s?

I personally haven’t and I’m scared to take them…I’m not good with the whole test taking thing.

^ I took the SAT in May and I’m retaking it in October and taking a subject test in November. I took the ACT in June but I’m not retaking it.

For better or worse, test-taking is pretty much the only thing I am good at. I’ve taken two SATs, three ACTs, and three SAT Subject Tests.

I’ve only taken the ACT w/o writing once. I’m taking the ACT w/ writing and three SAT subject tests in the fall.

2 SAT, 2ACT, 2 SAT subject
@tinny did you have the IL state ACT w/o writing?

I’ve take the SAT once (it’ll be 3 times in October), the ACT 0 times (it’ll be once in September), and 2 subject (math II and Chem)

I hate tests and they hate me. I couldn’t even figure out simple math questions on the SAT. To be honest, all the questions on the SAT sucked, so I thought I would give the ACT a try. I took a practice test-- did terrible. The math almost made me cry and rage for about 10 minutes.

I freaking love my life.

I love the ACT compared to the SAT on the SAT I would score about a 630 in math but on the ACT my average is a 32 >.<
my total for SAT is a 1640 … but on ACT I got a 29 … im taking the ACT in September, shooting for a 31 :D

That’s a large gap! There was hardly any difference between my ACT and SAT scores.

Oh and I have
2 safety
4 matches
1 reach
1 community college (never know something might happen, I have heard storys of valedictorians getting rejected everywhere, even “safeties”)
I think that’s decent lol … the way I see it I want to go to the most prestigious school that I know I can excel in, hence a lot of matches, and Im scared to apply to more reach schools cause I don’t want to waste time and money on an application that I have a low chance at getting accepted when I could be spending time perfecting my match apps.

@1sparkle2 I know !! its absolutely crazy ! I guess it just goes to show some people legit are smart and have what it takes to get amazaballs scores, they just cant do the test. Such as me and that god awful SAT … even my subject tests were blahh … 600 & 610

Huh. Well, the SAT is weird. I feel like it’s always trying to trick you. They’ll give you a three step problem, but the answers you’d get if you only did one or two steps will also be choices. The ACT is more content based but I just can’t do that science section for some reason.

@iron Yeah that was the state administered test.

Tinny, what’s your ED school? I’ve been hung up on doing ED vs SCEA to certain schools and I just don’t know what I want. I want certain things in my life but I haven’t thought really about what I want for a school. I may just try to finish and polish the apps that are most likely for early and decide close to November.

I will submit early, though Canadian school apps are out till sometimes April.

Went to Penn today. Nice campus and I love Philadelphia so that’s probably my fourth choice overall. Most of the schools I apply to are going to be “reaches” - that is, the ultra-selective schools where I still likely won’t be accepted even though I exceed most of the average scores. My breakdown is probably 6/3/1 for reaches/matches/safeties.
