TinnyT, that’s a good idea, I might do the same thing. Honestly, I wasn’t planning on getting my recommendation teachers anything, but it seems like nice compensation for writing letters.

What are some good gifts for a teacher, though? I’m thinking maybe a jazz or classical CD that I would typically get for myself.

Yeah, I’m worried that if I give it before apps are due though, it’ll seem like I’m trying to persuade them to write me a really good rec letter. Lol.

I’m getting my APUSH teacher a clock with American presidents on it because we had a Presidential March Madness thing where I won. And for my English teacher, I’m trying to find a really big rubber duck haha. I got best essay one time, and he let us choose rubber ducks which he collects.
So basically don’t give them a generic gift like a mug or idk a stapler. Just put thought into it and think, would the teacher just throw it in a pile of similar stuff after they get it?
I think the CD is a pretty good gift :)

@vivendium Well by December, I’ll have all my applications done and submitted so it works for me. I would say give them a gift AFTER you have submitted all your applications.

@TinnyT I hate my indecisiveness too. Like, I’m considering applying to a couple schools just because they’re free to apply to (and because I like them, but I wouldn’t like them enough otherwise…)
I got a letter/ view book from Smith and it’s free to apply online and you don’t even need to send in official score report, they just accept it from your transcript… I thought it was too all-girls and stuff but I like it besides that. Wasn’t planning to apply though… What are the negatives in applying?

@LoveArt I guess there isn’t a financial negative in applying. But it would be time wasted, especially if you don’t really care too much about the school.

I just eliminated Penn and UMich from my common application and my college list. I wouldn’t go to those schools if accepted anyways. I honestly just want to apply to Wash U and that’s it, but unfortunately I cannot do that.

I can’t tell if I like Penn or not. I have friends who love it but I’m kind of reserved and don’t think I can handle/don’t want to participate in heavy hook-up culture.

On the other hand, I really love their dual degree programs and CAS itself is pretty cool and I know a guy who got accepted and had similar stats to me and aid is need blind for me :-o and no one from my school really applies so I really want to like it. The Cornell campus is honestly the most beautiful thing ever (man’s creations are nothing compared to nature for me) but it gives lame FA, is really large and I’ve heard horror stories about bio there.

I’m going to try and go on a visit trip in a few weeks and see if I like any ED schools enough to apply ED. Otherwise I’ll end up SCEA-ing to H or Y. But I don’t really know what I like or what my chances are at anything.

I’ve gotten surprisingly comfortable with the idea of staying in Canada. There are a few programs I’d really like to get into (super selective) and I would save a lot of money (this obvs depends on FA though). I really have career goals in mind over anything else ATM and I don’t know whether I care that much about the experience. I mean, yes, I like to hang out with really smart people. But I really don’t relish the thought of competing all the time. I compete against an obstacle - the test, the process etc. I try not to compete against actual people.

But IDK. At least I’m learning to express myself better.

Schedule Question (yay throwback to the OP):

I’m doing an independent study thing for math where I make up my own curriculum, get it approved, watch MIT OCW, basically make a journal of the key concepts/solved problems and do an application based final project.

I am behind on this and need to have the course done before I submit my EA/ED apps. Hopefully, I should have it done before I ask my supervising teacher to write me a rec.

Should I:

a) try to just finish Multivariable Calc and do Linear Algebra and Diff Eqs next year
b) try to finish Multivariable Calc and struggle really hard to do Linear Algebra at the same time and do Diff Eqs and AP Stat next year
c) try to finish Multivariable Calc and do Linear Algebra and AP Stats next year

I think a or c are the best options. I’m 100% sure if I plan on doing this much math in school, I’ll have to retake all of it except maybe single variable anyway so it’d be good if I had a solid understanding of it. If I stay in Canada, I should probably get credit for AP Stats. But idk. Thoughts?

Keep in mind, I need to do an independent study for English since I finished all 4 years of English offered at my school. Other courses are AP Physics/gr 12 physics (with the worst teacher of the school apparently), AP Euro, grade 12 social studies, gym and this silly career thing, with distance learning French.

my88keys: made my list too, 14 schools. I think eventually I’ll just be like nope, not applying here, here, here, or here, and it’ll be better.

ecouter11: same here! Penn was my original ED (well, Huntsman was) school of choice, and my visit/pre-interview went great! then I was talking to my friend who is a rising sophomore and I don’t know if that lifestyle is for me. maybe I’ll get into it, but I really don’t want that pressure.

also question about your question. you’re a senior, do you mean you’d take Stat in college, or what? lost me there.

@Malaise, Same here! I have friends there who seem to be fine with the pressure but they’re in engineering or looking at grad school and neither of those options are particularly GPA-focused. I mean, I want to go to med school and in Canada, getting into medical school is really, really hard already and I don’t want to spend my entire life working for the GPA. I’m a collaborative type :-/

Are you going to RD instead? The thing with Penn is that half of the class is accepted ED and everyone is saying if I apply ED, I’ll have a good chance. BTW, how is the pre-interview? I might fly to Philly from where I live to visit colleges and the place I used to live in NY and I dunno if I should try for that.

re:your question, by “next year”, I meant that course would be counted under senior year, versus a junior year course which I would try to wrap up before the start of October. I should’ve finished the independent studies by June but am getting extra time because it was a really busy term.

Haha and I’ve 14 as well. I kind of want to drop JHU (I feel like they have crap aid and it’s overly competitive) and Cornell but my mom wants me to apply, so I’m going to have to.

WUSTL and Emory at least have opportunities for merit. I just found out that I can apply to the UNC Moorehead Cain scholars for Canada w/o submitting the actual app. If I move to finalist consideration, I have to rush an app.

I’m applying to mostly US reach schools (Roch is the one exception). If I get enough aid/merit and I like the school I might go but I’m okay with staying in-Country.

I probably have like 20 now
But half of those schools are the kinds where there are as many pros as well as cons so they’re really hard to decide on.
I’ve ten schools I’ll definitely will apply to.

I’m thinking of not applying to MIT or Brown because my sister hardly got any aid, and she was a much better student than I am for high school. I’ll probably get less aid…
