High School Class of 2014

Derp, derp, derp.

Don’t drop that derp-y derp. EH! Don’t drop that DERP-Y DERP!

Head still shaking? Don’t worry. I’ve got more. ;)

I know this will sound contradictory coming from someone who spends his time on CC, but people who literally talk only about college and the admissions process irritate me. They always talk about the common app, ACT, recommendations, blah blah blah.

I probably seem like an irritable person to you all because I complain about so much, but I’m really not. I’M FUN! lol

Also this Ohio State Honors essay <<
Lemme start my Northwestern essay.

^ Lol. I complain a lot, too. It bothers my friends. I think it’s temporary and will end once I get into college. I hope… I mean, I’m fun too! Really! I promise!

Made an executive decision to at George Washington University to my list. I’m in need of more realistic, though still appealing, options.

@Tinny: There is nobody in my life who’s like that… that’s why I come to CC lol. Not too much exposure, not too little.

So, the hiring manager looked at my resume, and basically hired me on the spot (she seemed to value academia and schoolwork very highly; she even told me that she doesn’t want to give me a lot of hours because of my course load, and she seemed supportive about my future academic endeavors), but I’m kind of scared. She gave me this whole lecture about how I need to be assertive (she could tell by my demeanor and quiet voice that I’m not an assertive person; her skepticism was very clear), persuasive (apparently Kmart has a lot of plans and deals???), and able to hold my ground when faced with “nastiness”.

I’m not bad with people; I have a ton of friends and I know how to be patient, but people intimidate me more often than not, especially when they’re taking their anger out on me, regardless of whether I’ve actually done something.

Case in point, my friend has had her license for three days (so, no, I should not have legally been in the car with her), and we were leaving the gas station yesterday, and this guy started cussing her out because he didn’t like that she cut in front of him. He wasn’t even yelling at me, but my anxiety still rose a considerable amount >_<. How am I supposed to react if a customer starts yelling at me because her product malfunctioned or something… I thought this job only entailed counting out change and saying, “Have a good day!” ;-;

You’ll probably struggle with the job at first tbh. Don’t fret, though, after a few weeks you’ll be battle-hardened and won’t take crap from anybody.

Well… maybe not that, but at least you’ll be more helpful to customers and have a higher tolerance level.

I work retail and yes people can be nasty sometimes for no reason.

Well, usually they have a “reason,” but it’s usually very petty and not something that I have any control over.

Basically, the number one rule for working with the public is to not take anything personally.

So yes, you must “stand your ground” while also managing to be polite. Do everything you can to say things in a non-confrontational way in order to “appease” people. Always act like you are on their side rather than trying to battle them, if that makes sense.

You’ll probably learn how to “spin” things to make them sound better. For example, my store has a 20% off coupon, but you can’t combine it with any other coupons, sales, or promotions. But when someone tries to combine it with these things, I say “Our promotion is actually better than the coupon, so you can keep it for another day!” rather than “You can’t use this coupon with promotions.”

Another tip that goes along with the “on the customer’s side” thing, if necessary blame the company, upper management, or some vague policy (real or imagined). People are less likely to be nasty to you if they have some other “figure” to blame.

Finally, if things get out of hand, you can always say “Let me grab my manager, he/she can handle this more effectively than I can.” Don’t be afraid to do this, it’s their job!

Thanks lldm, for your response re:racial question. I’ve always been curious about it. I hope it wasn’t offensive.

Ughh I am the only person who feels neurotically scared over everything??? Like, I just read a thread about some girl getting herpes from her boyfriend and just (sorry to the poor girl) that’s so scary. And besides HSV, there’s HPV and a ton of other disease and I keep reading/seeing articles about dudes been creepers that remove birth control while copulation or pulling out IUDs or hiding pills and cheating on their respective others. And then there are the worse stories, of BFs being abusive, trusted people being rapists and creepers hacking your webcams to take pictures of you and now I just want to be a celibate hermit.

I know I sound old but it seems like everyone is a jerk. :frowning: And this is just one area of human interaction.

I need to work on my CA essay. I had a good first idea but revisions are most def needed. I’m thinking of dropping more schools that I know will give me so-so aid or be more expensive than they’re worth. I think attending certain schools will give real, tangible benefits but for many others…WUSTL, JHU, probably Duke for me (not for others) that’s not really true. I guess I’m lucky to live in a country where most public schools are regarded well and are inexpensive. If I deleted those three, and Cornell (the FA is probably miserable), I’d have a solid 10 US apps to do. I probably could do a better job on them as well. :-/

Plus, I know we have to save money. Meh, I find it ironic that my mum is the one who opposes this agenda the most.

Are any of you guys involved in band/orchestra? I just watched the US National Youth Orchestra’s entire concert (Tchaik. violin concerto w/ Joshua Bell and Shostakovich 10) and it was pretty awesome. They blow most orchestras with paid musicians absolutely out of the water. Makes me want to spend all school year practicing so I can audition next year.

I play cello and was involved with orchestra. I know one of the girls in the first stand of first violin. :P

I did violin since I was 9 and quit when I was 13. Did not practice enough. There were some hardcore students at my school though.

Ive played trumpet since age 10, so for 7 years now. I do marching band, and ours has about 155 people. I also do jazz band and a few other ensembles

I play the piano. I play the piano so badly that the best compliment my own mother can give me after recitals is, “It wasn’t that bad.”

I’m a hypochondriac.

That’s pretty cool. I’m friends with one of the bassists and know another 8 that did not make it haha.

I wish I started practicing earlier, like in elementary school or something. I never really got serious with music until around 9th grade.

@brown & rkw: thanks, that made me feel better :). Hopefully it won’t be an absolutely terrible experience, & I learn how things work sooner rather than later.

@ecouter: Not at all! I love when people ask questions lol. Race is a weird topic, & it’s hard to offend me.

I’m pit percussion section leader in my school’s marching band, & I play piano in the jazz band. Orchestras are so amazing; I’d love to be in one. I also wish I could play the cello & the harp…

i don’t do band because from what i saw in middle school and now, high school, they’re all nerds.
i applaud people who play instruments though because it requires a lot of dedication and skill.

I’m the cheerleader who’s friends with everyone in the band and marching band. Lol unfortunately my band teachers ruined band for me, but my twin still plays the violin.

most of my friends are either in orchestra or band… I’m the odd one out ahah. never learned how to play a single instrument.

I used to play clarinet, but I hated it and quit when I got to 9th grade. It was a very dramatic process.

Has anyone read The Kite Runner? I stayed up late reading it and it was amazing!

Loved it! Watch the movie now, it’s really good and true to the book. I’m trying to get into the other books but I can’t really get into it.
