High School Class of 2014

Early action/decision for me depends if I finish everything on time. :P

For commonapp, did you guys report your unweighted or weighted gpa?

@my88keys: Is the Ivy Dreams documentary the one about all of the asian students who get rejected from ivies and have super strict parents? (And a couple who get accepted)
I have pretty much already watched all the college stuff I could find on youtube, haha it’s sad… haven’t seen the GA tech thing though!

I’m not EAing to any reaches, but that’s just because most of them (besides Yale… not even sure if I’ll apply there though) only have ED and I’m not going to do that. I don’t think senior year grades will give me much of a boost though.

I’m putting UW GPA… But my UW GPA is 4.25 on my school’s scale, and 3.99 on the other scale. Both are 4.0 scales, but my school counts A+'s as 4.33. What do I do?

Off-topic:

Taking 2 APs + 4 DEs, having 18-25 hrs of marching band/week, holding down a PT job (~12 hours), and being expected to have a social life sucks.

In case anybody didn’t know.

I’ve only been in school for 4 days, and I’m already drained & don’t know how to make time for my homework (and I’ve already pretty much killed off my social life, so I can’t take any time out of that, as it more or less doesn’t exist).

Help.

.-.

Mostly I just need to survive until November- that’s when marching band ends.

Unweighted. Mostly because my school doesn’t calculate a weighted one, but also because every school weights differently and unweighted is more uniform (it’s almost always on a 4.0 scale instead of something weird).

First day went alright. Only went through shortened periods of my first day classes (I have a block schedule).

I’ve had all my teachers before, except my English teacher, who I absolutely love. Gonna enjoy English class for once.

I’m retaking the ACT and somehow improved my reading section 12 points from my two most recent practice tests. Yay.

National Achievement Semifinalist! Woot!

Also, @my88keys, I watched the entire “Ivy Dreams” documentary like a year or so ago, lol. Part of me wished I could be one, but then I realized that I would not want all of YouTube witnessing my massive failure.

Did you guys get notified about National Merit stuff yet? This is really important to me because I need the NMF scholarships, but I’m worried my school will screw it up and not give me the forms when they come or something.
They say they haven’t gotten anything. I don’t know.

My are above the cutoffs and I haven’t heard anything either. I thought they were going to be released in mid-to-late September, so I wouldn’t be too worried about it at this point.

evanatch, same here… unless my state’s cutoff jumped 13 points from last year

VanillaThunder - If you don’t mind me asking, which schools did you apply to? I envy you so much right now. I will write my 5th draft of the CA essay this weekend. I haven’t even looked at supplements.

They gave our NMSF letters out today, but they were dated August 27. It makes me think that a lot of schools hold them for a while without notifying the students. The letter said that they release the semifinalists’ names on September 11, so I wouldn’t get worried if you don’t hear before then.

God I hate being in MA. Highest NMSF cutoff in the nation.

My school said they hadn’t received any. But they don’t seem very knowledgeable about the process. My counselour thinks they’re supposed to be sent to the students’ homes, and in my head, I was thinking, “NO! YOU ARE WRONG!” But I really like her, so I wouldn’t do that.

But even if I don’t make it, I should still get something as I’m 110% sure I’ll make National Achievement. I’m getting frustrated, but whatever.

Does it say anything about what you have to do to be considered for finalist status? (From what I gather it’s not automatic?)

So, 1,300 out of 1,600 for Achievement make Finalist? Does that mean that by “meeting requirements” they just mean doing the application fully and completely? Because they don’t really give much specifics on how they choose Finalists, though they give plenty of detail for the scholarship.

Okay so I was 1 point away from being a national merit semi finalist. Cry for me pls.

@halcyonheather - I don’t have the letter with me right now; I accidentally left it at school. But the gist of it is that most of the process of moving from semifinalist to finalist is just a matter of filling out forms and getting things where they need to be. You need to have a good enough SAT score (I think it’s like 2000 cutoff or something) sent to NMSC by the cutoff date, you have to give a bunch of demographic information, and I’m fairly sure there’s an essay.

@collegeluva101 - The numbers I’ve heard are 15,000 finalists and 16,000 semifinalists. Based on the really personalized non-Orwellian usernames that NMSC assigns, my friend, Applicant17453, thinks that they have more than 16,000 semifinalists this year.

National Achievement is different from National Merit.

halcyonheather’s got it. National Achievement is only 1,600, whereas National Merit is 16,000.
