High School Class of 2014

Schools I’ve already clicked apply for:
Texas A&M
UT
UH
Iowa State
University of Minnesota

Schools that I haven’t finished applying to yet:
U of Illinois
And any other colleges I decide to apply to on a whim

@Loveartforever

Wow, your scores are amazing. If I were you, I wouldn’t bother retaking.

But since you are retaking, here’s my 2 cents-
Subject tests are a bit tricky since they’re so specialized. I took two, and I had my own way of dealing with them.

I started early. 2nd semester junior year I put in a solid couple of months of prep for each of my subject tests.

I dealt with them separately, which helps tremendously. (E.g., instead of taking 2 subject tests in May, I took one in May and the other one in June.) So I ended up scoring really well on both.

So with my experience, I’d say either:

 1. Keep your 760 on Math 2 and only prep/take French. If you can get a 780-800 on French, colleges will be impressed with your high 2nd language subject test score.

However if you’re pressed for time, take the ACT; you’re in the ballpark for a 36. Since you’ve only taken it once, it works in your advantage (since you both know the testing format and already scored well the first time).

My List of Schools in Order of Current Preference (Very capricious) (Don’t Judge)

 1. Yale University (SCEA)
 2. Princeton University
 3. Stanford University
 4. Harvard University
 5. Brown University (PLME)
 6. Georgetown University
 7. Washington University in St. Louis

 8. Duke University
 9. University of Pennsylvania
 10. Columbia University
 11. University of Chicago

 12. Johns Hopkins University

 13. Cornell University
 14. Northwestern University

 15. Rice University

 16. University of Texas at Austin

Depending on how I feel later, some of these might come off. This probably isn’t completely accurate as I made the list a few weeks ago.

^Lol you guys are funny.

@quidditchcat- Praise to you for having a reasonable list- save the first four you listed :p

I’ve been lurking on CC for a couple years now…but I decided to make an account today…Senioritis starting to set in and all :P

I just finished sending in all my Texas A&M stuff this week and I think I’ll apply to OU as well. I like to tell people “Oxbridge” is my first choice just to ■■■■■ them…

^How about UT Austin?

@yayitsme, I really like Olin as well but I just can’t decide yet whether I want to do engineering or physics so I kinda ruled it out due to the lack of a physics major. Your list looks a bit like mine, except I’m way more indecisive:

-Caltech
-MIT
-Stanford
-Rice
-Harvey Mudd
-URochester
-Cornell
-RPI (maybe)
-Case Western (maybe)
-WUSTL (maybe)
-State schools (CU-Boulder, CO School of Mines, U of Arizona)

I was going to apply to CMU too but I’ve heard the financial aid isn’t too good.

@migraine: thanks, I get told that a lot
I was trying to have only 2 reaches, but I did a summer program at Carleton and I’ll have letters from the professors to the admissions, and I didn’t have any good reason to eliminate Rice. I almost took off MIT because I’ve heard bad things about financial aid, but then it’s MIT. That’s pretty hard to argue against.

@catchtwentythree: thank you!! Your advice helps a lot! I think I will sign up to retake French in October or November. The problem is that I’ve basically forgotten all my french over the summer (not really but idk if I can study enough in a month to get a 780)… The only reason I’d need to get it done in October would be for EA to Boston College… haha but yeah I’ll figure it out! Thanks!

@migraine I don’t like UT that much for a variety of reasons (although some are pretty shallow:P)…I went there for a MUN conference and i didn’t find the campus that appealing. The fact that UT doesn’t offer as much NMSF scholarship as A&M and OU is a major reason too. And I don’t like burnt orange:P

@LoveArtForever If you do want to retake the Math SAT, try Barron’s. I read the book the week before the test and got an 800.

Legit, bro. Legit. Interwebs-high five for crossing colleges off for reasons like this! (I crossed a school off because when you google the name there’s too much advertising that comes up)

I’m kind of freaking out over my subject tests. I have to take the October test in physics and I haven’t had a full physics class since sophomore year (that my school does not offer Honors/AP/IB physics is its greatest weakness). I’m about halfway through the Barron’s book right now. I really want 770+ for MIT/Caltech and got ~740 on the diagnostic test at the start of the book so we’ll see, I guess.

@evanatch, Remember, Barron’s is know for giving harder tests than the real thing. You’ll probably achieve your goal.

I don’t know if I should take subject tests or not…I feel that my SAT is “low-ish” (2120) and I want to retake it. On the other hand I’m pretty content with my 34 on the ACT w/ writing so I don’t know if I should even bother with the SAT stuff ever again. My dad is paranoid that my SAT will not make the National Merit Finalist requirements though…

@quidditchcat Don’t be discouraged!!! I’m a Bausch & Lomb winner, so I get a possible scholarship there (which is why it stands out a little on my list), I’m sure you have a really good shot. Please please please don’t let CC discourage you from applying anywhere. I’ve almost quit my MIT application countless times because of this place, but I’ve decided to go for it.

@evanatch

I’ve ruled out Caltech because I heard they focus more on you being super-sciencey. I’m going for MIT on the basis that I’m very into science but also have strong ECs in art and theater. I’m a pretty weird applicant, and I feel like that’s more of a bonus at MIT than Caltech. I also ruled out Stanford because I’m a bit intimidated, but I might add it at the last minute. Harvey Mudd is actually on my list too, I forgot to add it.

Good luck with your apps! Maybe I’ll see you next year, haha

How many sittings did it take everyone to accomplish their current SAT score?

I’m taking the test for the 2nd and final time in October and I really hope to improve my 2080…

I wish I had your score.

I’m taking the SAT my second and final time this October too. I’m hoping to improve my low, low score.

First SAT (freshman year) - 1970
Second SAT (junior year) - 2340

Either two or one, depending on whether freshman year counts. It was for a talent search.
