Chemistry class update: My teacher ranted about the Imperial System of Measurement, and then we played with tin foil. 'Twas a good day.

New to this thread. I’m not too involved in school and I want to be. Not just for college admissions, but for devoting my time to something useful and expressing my interests. I would also like to to found a club having to do with conservation, science, animal rights, or community service. Any ideas on what I could do? Anyway here’s my schedule (Sophomores can’t really take APs and there isn’t honors or anything):

Spanish 4
English
Chemistry
Algebra 2
Chinese History
World History (for sophomores)

Welcome helloel! Sad to hear that your school doesn’t have honors courses, but your schedule seems great for a sophomore. There are many sophomores who are still in Freshman English, the freshman science course (Earth for where I live), and Algebra 1. Plus, Spanish 4 as a sophomore is amazing!

As for clubs, try to talk with a teacher there to see if you there are willing to help you start the club with with you. In my experience, starting a club was hard, but totally worth it.

I guess I should give a class report…

AP US History: The class is pretty cool, the first AP course I have taken. Just a ton of reading to do really. The teacher is pretty nice I think and the class itself seems pretty nice too.

Chemistry Honors: I find the whole class just…awkward…I don’t know why. Mostly I find the kids in the class annoying and the teacher just has an awkward personality. Seems REALLY easy though, easy A.

English 10 Honors: Again seems really easy, another easy A. The teacher just seemed really easy, basically the honors version moves faster and just has a bit more homework. Nothing special.

Algebra II: The teacher isn’t really that great, his lessons are kind of quick and expects us to know exactly what he is talking about the first time he says it. No real explanation. He is a really cool guy…but doesn’t really get serious sometimes. I mean I don’t mind that but…it would be nice to have a serious class…I think I could still get an A though.

Computer Programming: Same teacher as above, same situation. Thank god I know most everything I will learn in this course. Easy A.

Spanish II: She seems much more harder than my last Spanish teacher, so not sure about this. Maybe a high B or low A.

Electronic Arts I/Career Seminar: Both EASY PZ As!

@Robodl95

Oh yeah, I had gym first period too last year. We have a turf field…and in the turf is these little black things…the would stick all on my shoes since my shoes were wet and sometimes my legs x.x

Okay, what clubs do you have at your school or what activities? I want to start something that is pretty common elsewhere, so I won’t have any trouble developing projects.

We have: Key Club, Poetry Club, Drama Club, Environmental Club, Japanese Club, Spanish Club, French Club, Creative Writing and Art Club, Fashion Club, FCCLA, German Club, Knowledge Bowl/Hi-Q, NHS and Ping Pong Club.

But they’re not all called “X club”. Poetry Club is the Undead Poet’s Society, Creative Art and Writing is ARGO, Environmental is GREAN (Grass Roots Environmental Action Now).

self studying practically for all my aps this year!!! woohooo!!!

wow I feel so stupid…

Uhh, old school had MUN, Debate, Math Team, Environmental club. We’ll see about the new school.

School starts tomorrow! It’s a new school and I’m mad nervous!! arghhh :(

I’m reposting my question from my thread in the hopes I’ll get more of a response here:

I just moved to a new city, and this guy has offered me a job tutoring.

I’m not sure whether I should take it, since this is like a new city, and there are other things I’d like to do also.

I’d be taking 3 APs: (sophomore)
Physics (school has regular only), and self studying topics for the AP
Calculus AB/BC - 1 semester each
AP Chem through ChemAdvantage and possibly studying for the olympiad-I heard that this course takes ~2 hours a day…

My english/ SS classes are normal, although I go to a sort of selective school so I don’t know the level of the classes.

I also want to do research (biomedical) with a Prof, and I’ll be meeting with a few this week…the prof I worked with in my old city said research is a solid time commitment and it requires a lot of effort (reading papers, coming in and setting up experiments).

This tutoring job would be from 5:00 to 8:30 on a Monday. Although it’s only 3 1/2 hours a week, it’s during a time when I’d be studying, working in the lab, and eating dinner.

The benefits are that I’d be able to refresh my concepts in math and I do enjoy teaching.

I don’t know whether I should take the job or not! D:

What would you guys do?

Oh, does anyone have a “Do Something” club? I would like to start one at my school.

I probably wouldn’t do the tutoring job and save that for maybe the summer. If you’re going to be doing research and have a tough schedule that’s enough to take up your time. By the way, how did you communicate with professors to do research? It’s something I’m interested in doing.

Hey helloel,

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking…imo, school> research > job and I want to have enough time to relax (sounds almost abnormal here on CC!).

As to communicating with professors, back in my old school, there’s a large medical center affiliated with a University. They do a lot of research there. I wrote out an email saying that I liked science a lot, was interested in their research, talked a little about my science classes that I was taking (Bio and Chem Honors) and some stuff I was self studying.

I emailed reallllyyy late, and so I only got 1 positive response. I had a few other professors saying that they’d love to help but little lab space, etc.

I shadowed and worked in this prof’s lab with grad/undergrad students and learned some basic experiments, techniques and read lots of science literature.

I came in contact with someone wth more connections who would’ve set me up with someone else had I stayed, but i moved.

Before I moved, I sent an updated resume with my GPA, science awards, courses, lab experience to 3 professors. I got 2.5 positive responses this time.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more specific questions! Hope this helped :)

Out of curiosity, are any of you devoutly religious?

^My family is, but I’m not so much. I’ve struggled with my faith, as I’m a science person and really believe in logical things. Not really sure how I’ll turn out…

Well, my family is devout religious, muslim. However, I tend to be more of a logical/science person, rather then faith. However, theism is still part of my faith now.

Also, I only have one more free day till school starts on the 8th.

My schedule, I got today is:

Prd:
- English 10 Honors
- WTG Proc (Another writing class) Honors
- Chemistry Honors
- Phys Ed (There is no honors in gym)
- Alg2/Trig Honors
- Spanish II (Nonspanish students rarely are able to take honors -___-)
- Symphonic Band (There are no honors for band)
- AP World History (2 year course, i’ve been taking from 9th grade)
- AP World History Lab

So mostly honors, and an AP class i’ve been taking from 9th grade (the only 2 year AP class in my school, it’s weird -__- )

I’ve been more of a science/logical person, but I’m becoming more religious as time goes on. It’s maybe that time of my life where I need to decide what I’m going to worship.

My soph orientation is at 12 Noon today, so I am so hyped!

English 10H
Geometry H (only four out of 260 were allowed to take Alg2/Trig)
AP World History
Biology H (AP only offered to Seniors, bummer)
Religion 10 (yes, I attend Catholic School)
Spanish 3H (I was the only rising sophomore to move from Spn2 to Spn3H)
Intro to Music (.5 Credit to go with Art 1 which I took last year)
Gym (required all 4 years smh)

Though my family is Christian, I consider myself a “Christian-in-the-making”. :P

Also, here’s my official schedule.

History of Old Testament (mandatory)
Honors Chemistry
AP Lang
Geometry
APUSH
German 2

@nothingto: AP World History… lab? I, what?

@anaychi: My mom is but I’m agnostic.

Class/teacher report thing will be posted later. The first day of school was pretty great.

For the people taking AP US History, what guidebook do you plan on purchasing? I’m probably going for the AMSCO book, but I’m having a hard time actually finding a place to buy it.
