High School Class of 2014

I really want to get into Model UN next year as a junior (because of pure love for current events/debate), would that be too late?

@exodus I’m in debate and I’m going to join MUN next year, so let’s both go out on a limb and try it? :)

@Quacoh: I assumed as much. And I remember the days when you were a pretty original ■■■■■… How about you introduce yourself, list your schedule, and tell us about some of your goals? Favorite colleges? I’d always thought you were a junior or senior before you posted here. Strange, huh?

Not one for introductions, honestly. Just your average narcissist trying desperately to make it through a below-average southern North Carolina high school.

As for schedule.

1st semester:
AP Euro.
Honors Bio.
Principles of Business
Honors Civics

2nd semester:
Honors Eng. II
AP HuGeo.
Pre-Calc
Honors Chem.
-Also self-studying AP World, AP Psych., and AP Enviro. Sci.

As for goals, I guess find and do more ECs. My school is severely lacking in the department, we don’t even have Key Club, MUN, and many other cookie cutter clubs. Taking the SAT and finally delving into these AP tests. Still actively trying to figure out what interests me, everything so far is dull, due in no small part to my school system progressively getting worse.

As far as colleges go, I’ve reserved judgement until I can at least figure out what marginally interests me.

Hope that wasn’t too much complaining for you all. Also Studious I noticed that our join dates are only a day apart. :o

only 4 days of school left for me!!!

How about you guys?

hey everyone,

English II-H
Geometry-H
Sports & Entertainment Marketing
Biology-H
AP US History
Cisco IT-H
French II
Chemistry-H

As for my EC’s,
Model UN
Football Team-freshman year
and I play the guitar and drums.
I’m planning to join Key Club, SGA, FBLA, next year, and hopefully be a part of NHS.

I’d like to become a lawyer, and my first choice college is Georgetown.
Any other aspiring Hoyas on here? lol.

Rather off-topic, but I think you guys would be a lovely help:

If any of you remember from my previous posts, I run a Philosophy Club at my school. We pose discussion circles that are meant for inquisition and the like. My question for you guys is: What kind of philosophical topics would you like to discuss? What do you think would bring out the most in people and encourage lengthy discussion?

I’m slowly but surely running out of concrete topics, and nothing beats crowdsourcing when you’re trying to fuel your ventures. So, please, spill your hearts out.

@Quacoh: I’m from NC too! What part? I won’t say my town or county because it would be a dead giveaway to some of the people who love around me. I’ll just say I live in tobacco country near the VA border.

Anyone planning on applying to UF Senior year? I’m from Florida so it 's the best place I can go to in-state.

UF as in Uni of Florida? Never looked into Florida schools because of hurricanes and heat.

@evanb1996
Complete opposite of you, I’m right outside of the great Queen City. I’m sure you share my dislike of NC?

@anaychi
I hope you’ve already talked about Nietzsche, because if not, shame on you. I’ve always found very obscure philosophical ideals interesting, things like Solipsism and Nihilism. I’m not sure how you’d formulate those into discussion, but if you’re really gunning for heavy discussion, ethics is good. Stealing bread to feed a family and all that…

@Quacoh: I hate where I live. Education is horrible and the money goes nowhere. But, I don’t hate NC overall. Has some nice landscapes and amazing colleges and basketball. I’m more focused on leaving this place and heading somewhere more urban. By any chance, are you applying to NCSSM?

@Quacoh: Woah, that’s pretty cool. I was a long-time browser before I finally committed to making an account, but I assume you were too.

Are you more of a math/science-type or an english/humanities-type? If the former, I recommend you check out the USAMO math test series and the USABO/USNCO/USAPhO Olympiads, depending on your preferences. They’re great ECs for someone who doesn’t have many in-school resources. (Oh, and I don’t have many suggestions for the latter. NaNoWriMo? Debate?) As for the paucity of clubs at your school, why don’t you start a few? I started a Math Competition Club at my school, and it’s been going great. Perhaps you could start a debate team or found a chapter of Mu Alpha Theta? Do what you can to improve your school, and admissions officers will love you for it. Or at least that’s my view.

Ooh, I love solipsism! Such a cool and unbelievable idea.

Solipsism is a rather fascinating concept that we’ve dwelled on, albeit slightly, before. Thanks for the input, Quacoh! Tomorrow we’re having a meeting where we’re going to discuss superheroes. Initially it sounds odd, but its a fascinating topic to discuss. The deeper issues that resonate in the dictums provided by comic books and movies deal with some morally subjective topics that would make for good discussion, such as personal identity, the definition of “humanity”, the bounds that someone can talk in enforcing justice outside of societal law, etc. It’s truly captivating stuff if you were to take time and think about it.

@studious wacfl this weekend? :D

My school has something vaguely similar to a philosophy club, only it’s just for the discussion of politics. It might be interesting to try a current event as a topic.

@evanb1996
No and I’m kind of kicking myself over it. It was one of those things that I didn’t think about, and when it was time to apply I hadn’t looked enough into it to consider it. Not to mention I’m not terribly advanced in math and science. I’m assuming that you applied, so best of luck! I’m guessing I will have to compete with you for State AP Scholar though. >]

@Studious
Thanks I’ll check those out! I am considering starting some much needed clubs, but I still have to find a teacher interested in signing off on them. I also have no idea how to gauge the potential interest in the clubs, it would really be a shot in the dark.

@anaychi
No problem, sounds like a great topic.

@paris: Yes! And get this: I’ve yet to write my case. Yay me!

@Quacoh: As for gauging interest, find the smart, motivated kids in your school. There may be a dearth of such kids, but if you can find even 5 or 6, you’ll have enough to start a club. Tell them they’ll be founding members and entice them with officer positions. Best of luck!
