High School Class of 2015

Oh, I looked it up. Bank holidays are public holidays. Yeah, some of the same ones. We get off New Years Day, Easter (well, we usually have spring break then, and have a whole week off), last Monday in May (for us, called Memorial Day, to remember all of our veterans that died), ha, we get off 4th of July, that
s kind of a ironic thing I
m discussing this with you, since, you know, we declared our independence from Britain :D. We get a Thanksgiving holiday in the last week of November (usually three days off), Christmas, and then back to New Years. We also get off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

We look at independence day very different to Americans, apparently. Here it isn’t thought of as ANYTHING to do with us. It’s just when the USA declared independence
We have memorial day on 11.11 every year after the end of WWI, but we commemerate this by a minute (or two if we are remembering the families of those who died as well) and singing religious hymns (which I object to on principle) but have never got a day off school for it.
Bank holidays are public holidays, but we also get them for random days about 4 times a year, sometimes these get us off school.
Also the royal wedding is a bit different to a president getting married, this way we’re celebrating tradition and I don’t really know what else, I don’t support the royals. Either way, them getting married is a lot more long term than a president getting married.

Just wondering, do any of you know the conditions needed for someone to vote, is it just permanent residency?

@UK Girl
Born in the Usa, 35 years old, not a felon, 14 years living in the USA.

When I lived overseas, i realized that most people in Europe do not get other new’s scources on tv. CNN was on, but few pro republicans were on. Also, Europe is so Statist that when the 08 election was going on, our german neighbor said he wished america got someone who was an actual leftist, he called Obama a Right leaning canidate,

The reason people in the rest of the world do not like Romney has less to do with his policies and more to do with the mainstream world media, his mormonism, and the fact that he is an extremly rich man.

oh, woahitzme
have you taken the iSideWith.com quiz? It shows how yourn views lean with the canidates:
I got:
93% Gary Johnson
88% Mitt Romney
8% Barack Obama

However, i would bet that if a canidate was single, he would lose.

kyp, you just gave the requirements to be president. She asked about voting.

UKgirl, you have to be a U.S citizen, at least 18 years old. And some criminals can have their right to vote revoked.

Yeah, we have different things on 11/11, when I was in elementary school (don
t know what they call it over in the U.K, but whatever school you go to from ages 5-about 10 or 11) we
d have veterans come and talk to us.

We also get random days off called “teacher work days” just for students, so teachers can catch up on work and put grades in gradebook.

@kypdurron I meant to be able to vote in an election, not run for one.
We were watching CNN in Greece (it was the only one in English) but normally we don’t have American TV, although I find it hard to believe you watch other countries’ either…
I think we should leave the political views, it’s not the point of the forum. I only brought up my observations because I was wondering why the US has such different views generally to the whole rest of the world…

I love how they had like 7 different options for that quiz.

OK, my results, but I don`t think this is very accurate:

Mitt Romney: 89% Virgil Goode: 59% Gary Johnson: 43% Barack Obama: 27%

It`s funny they said I side with Virginia Voters 48% of the time.

I don
t even know how the rest of the world views things, that
s sad. Agreed, political to and end. At least we`re not even debating. The 2013 thread really got heated up the other day!

@CE527M We have days like that as well, although they are generally teacher training days ‘inset days’ (everyone thought they were insect days when we were little :D)
Also, that means I should be able to vote in the next US election, and possibly the next UK one, depending one when they end up calling it (it will be 2-3 years away, and I’m just 15)
We call it primary school, and Remembrance day is mostly in honour of those that died in the world wars, although it is technically for all wars. Also mostly for the dead, so we never had veterans come in for that, but we did for history :)

Thanks btw

woops sorry about that i musta read the question in the wrong way.

I wasnt trying to make it poltical but shed some light in why many dislike Romney in the rest of the world. I can assure you i am not trying to start an arguement

kyp, it
s OK. We
re good about discussing, but you know how the rules are.

UKgirl, why exactly do you want to go to school in the U.S? I have a couple of friends who`d do anything to go live in the U.K (preferably very close to One Direction, hint, hint)

gaaaaaaaaaaa!

You forgot the UNWRITTEN RULE!

Dont Bring up One Direction on any forum!!!

^ Yeah, well I had to explain WHY. That would explain a lot.

1D spend half their time touring in the US anyways. Either way, the only famous person I’ve met was French and this was in Boston, so…
I may change my mind about coming the to the US if the election goes a certain way, but at the moment it’s because I like the culture there, I like the education system (post high school anyway) and to be honest I just want to get away from my boring life and try something new. If the US doesn’t work out for me, I want to go to Holland or Germany (after a gap year learning the language!). And also the accents. There are some American accents that are so annoying, they just really grate, but generally I love them. This will sound weird to you, but how many people want to come to the UK for our accents??

roughly 1,000,000 teen girls a year. (Thats a guess, and its probbably right)

^ Yeah, my friend has an awesome English accent, she`s dying to go to England (only PARTLY because of One Direction). An English girl came to our high school and my friend about ran her over trying to and her so many questions.

Yes, that does sound weird, because I don`t really think Americans have accents. I suppose they do, and there are variations, Midwestern, Southern, Redneck, Boston.

Why would the election change your mind? Who ever is the next president could easily be voted out of office in the next election (2016), and no matter who wins, I don
t think it
ll kill America.

I guess it looks different when candidates have similar policies have always been running, but for some of us the idea of them becoming president is actually scary. This is so hard to do without putting my own opinions in it, but you can probably tell what I’m getting at.

Tbh, we can’t really tell the difference between accents much more than like New York/Boston and strong Southern, and nobody here can tell Americans and Canadians apart :D

I’m going to be taking a gap year after high school, and recently I’ve seen quite a few programmes that let students spend a semester in US schools that seem really interesting, so I may end up doing that!

You
ve gotta be kidding me? A southerner vs. a Canadian and you can
t tell the difference? Jeez, you Brits are crazy!

Yes, you can always tell a Boston from a Virginian.

Boston: Maaaa, go pahk the cah (Mom, go park the car)

Southern: Mama, can you go pawk tha caw? (Same thing)

I could probably tell a southerner from a canadian, but not a northener from one :)

Cna you guys tell the difference between British accents. Like chelsea vs scouser vs northern vs cockney?

British only have one accent: British. Didn`t know there were types.

Learn something new every day.

Actually, I haven`t heard that many people with accents speak, so I might have only heard one or two types all my life.

haha the differences seem huge to me. If you want to see, search Towie (the only way is Essex) on youtube and listen to some clips, the have a listen to some from Made In Chelsea. Both similar programmes, scripted ‘real life’ dramas but about the slaggiest and richest groups and such different accents, at leat they seem so to us :D

I guess we watch a lot more American tv than the other way around, so we learn more about you :)
