High School Class of 2015

Exactly, but they were both really smart. I know one of them is definitely there on merit.

Oh geez. That is tiny. We have like 400 kids per grade.

There’s one girl who’s a billionaire.

Oh okay, then that’s better. Ha, sorry, I’m just really annoyed at what someone just told me about how they got into Harvard. Legacy…blegh!

Wait…a billionaire? She’s a freaking billionaire? goes off to the corner and fumes very childishly

Well, her father is. :p

He’s on Forbes. You wouldn’t expect it to be her too.

Well I have to go to sleep. It’s almost 1 AM here.

Oh, Forbes. Might have known. :stuck_out_tongue:
Haha good night!

My grade has like 50 kids…

We have 11 seniors. :P

So much to read!
My school is state but selective, with 150 girls in each grade 6-10 then around 170 11-12. We get good results, but not because the school is any good. The intake is just very selective, it’s in an affluent are and we’re all very self motivated.
I like in the UK by the way. I was born in Hertfordshire, live in Buckinghamshire and next year will be at boarding school in central London, so never lived outside the SE.
My paternal grandfather was born in the US to Czech parents, served in the US navy in WWII then moved over here for a while when he met my grandma. She’s almost entirely British, but her sisters and remaining aunt mostly live in the US and Canada, and I have other relatives on that side in Australia.
My maternal grandfather is 3/4 Irish, although both he and his parents were all born in the UK. He’s also a bit welsh I think.

I get so jealous of people who can get into schools like Harvard just because of their family. Both my parents went to New College, Oxford and were married there. My brother even lived there for a year in college accomodation while my mum was still studying  I know it won’t help me get into Oxford if I decide to apply, but I’m hoping it will mean I’m more likely to get New College if I do get in.

Random post replying to various conversations while I was asleep :D

Got my PSAT score back: 192. Got to improve.

@UKgirl: Wow, your family sounds so smart  What’s an all-girl school like?

@HobbitTon: that is an excellent score. Do not let anyone, not even on CC, look down on you for that score, because you are at least 40 points above the national average for juniors and you still have plenty of time to prepare.
What was your weakest section? Concentrate first on improving that part of the PSAT because that will be the most useful thing to do first.
Plus, a ton of people have large gains from sophomore to junior year just by being in school for another year.

@purmou: geez that is tiny! That sounds like how many juniors and seniors stay in IB for the last two years at my school :stuck_out_tongue: almost everyone drops out at the end of sophomore year.

@ElvenRanger I really liked being at a girls school for the first few years, now it sucks. It means it’s really high pressured, really competitive and a bit monotonous. Also about half of us never talk to guys, not good preparation for life  Lots of people prefer it, but I’m glad I’m leaving at the end of the year.
I guess my family is pretty smart, you wouldn’t really know it now though! My mum has never worked in anything but teaching kids to cycle because she started having kids at 21 and now there are 4 of us, my older brother’s too lazy to do anyhting properly. He’s at Southampton university now, which is good but he could be somewhere much better. One of my younger brothers isn’t so smart, and the other one has serious concentration and apathy issues. I’m pretty lazy too, but I’m trying to improve :D

I didn’t even realise IB was more than a two year course  here it’s an alternative curriculum for A levels. I applied to 2 schools to do it, but changed my mind later. Either way I’m now going to a school that doesn’t offer it.

@HobbitTon seriously that’s a good score. Either way, you have time to improve so don’t be so negative!

We started picking our classes yesterday and will do even more on Monday. I’ve decided:
AP Lang
APUSH
Pre-Calculus
Physics
French
Principles of Engineering
Financial Investments and Decision-making
Health(required)
Gym (required)

My school:

-Only one in the county (remember, it’s a rural area guys)
-2,400 kids in the school (9-12)
-Somewhere between 500-600 kids in my grade.

@UKgirl: IB is separated into three different curriculums: PYP, which is something like grades K-5 in the US; MYP, which is grades 6-10 in the US; and DP, which is grades 11-12 in the US. It’s probably different in the UK, but yeah, tons of people are in PYP and MYP, but in DP the numbers plummet. :/

@petlover: sounds like a good mix of rigorous and not so rigorous. which is good because junior year is supposed to be the worst year in terms of stress. We start signing up for classes in February.

My school:
-One out of 5 in our district, but there’s a ton more in our county
-about 1600 kids total (9-12)
-about 400 kids in my grade

How big is a county normally? We have counties here but we don’t have the states so I guess counties here are more like small states?

@ElvenRanger thanks! I think there are a few schools here that do the middle school IB programme, but not many. And I would have thought it would be pretty similar, as it is supposed to be International :)

@UKgirl: I honestly have no idea how big counties are supposed to be. XD I feel like they divide it up more based on geographical locations in my state than size, because some counties are absolutely huge and others are “tiny”, in as much of a way that a county could be called that.
Haha yeah IB is really weird in the US; really though PYP doesn’t count for anything (it’s stupid and a waste of time. Thank goodness I only had to go through two years of it.) and MYP is nearly as stupid. MYP is the reason I have to take a stupid tech class and a stupid PE class this year. I don’t mind art though. :D

My schedule next year will probably look like this:

Band
AP Chem
IB Math HL
IB English A HL
IB French B HL
IB Visual Arts HL
IB Physics SL
IB Business Management SL

^that last one is to get out of taking history…

Counties can vary in sizes.

These are all of the counties in Virginia: http://www.digital-topo-maps.com/county-map/virginia-county-map.gif
