Ifax: Thanks, when are yours?

Pre-season for me begins on the 25th. I think it lasts all the way up until school starts on the 6th. It’s a little bit scary because I think I hurt my hamstrings the other day when I was running. It’s been 3 days, and they’re not feeling better, so I’m slightly worried. Any injuries for you?

I rolled my ankle AGAIN in July, but I was back and running in minutes.
My time trial is on the 25th, but I’m leaving for vacation from the 26-31.

Is anyone else as nervous as I am to start Freshman year? I know I have to make an initiative this year because a lot of colleges look for commitment.

I’m thinking of volunteering at a retirement center. Do you think it’s a good idea or should I wait until I’m settled into high school first?

I’ve also looked at the clubs, and unfortunately, not many of them really interest me.
For EC’s, my school’s website doesn’t give any information on the club itself, only the title. I’m trying to find activities involving fiction writing, but any writing-related things at my school are usually non-fiction writing. Maybe I’ll try to branch out, but it doesn’t really seem like my thing. I’m thinking about joining art club, but art isn’t something I’m really serious about. It’s only something I do when I’m bored and I’m not particularly good at it, so I don’t know if joining Art Club would be a waste of time. I might try book club, but then again, I’m not the most avid reader. I want to try out for the Junior math team, but I don’t know if I’ll be good enough. I’ve had the highest GPA in my math class the past two years, but I have a theory that it’s only because of my teachers. But, I’m pretty sure the math team at my school sucks because I tried to google them and nothing came up. So, you never know, I could have a solid chance. I want to do at least three clubs this year, just to get me started, but I’m really indecisive.

As for sports, I want to do Track, and I think that’s the only sport I’ll do. I don’t know if it’s possible to start a sport at my school, but I really love playing badminton (and I’m actually good at it!) If there was a badminton club, I would sign up in a second.

Regarding classes, I’m taking all honors courses offered. Besides my core classes, I’m taking gym, Spanish 2, and either Accounting or Speech and Debate. I had a whole mix up with my schedule, and Speech and Debate was originally like my third alternative, but now it’s my first. I also heard that not a lot of Freshman get into Accounting because upperclassman have priority, so I’m really hoping I’m an exception.

Also, I feel like I had a head start because in the summer I went to a writing camp. As you can probably see, writing is my strong point and something I like working on. However, in the future, I don’t plan on getting a degree in creative writing or english literature. I’m actually aiming towards something more like Psychiatry or Psychology, and maybe even something Math related if I change my mind through high school. I don’t know if all the writing activities would misguide colleges, or if they’ll consider it a commitment/passion and it’ll be to my advantage.

Last thing. This year I plan on entering the Scholastic’s Art and Writing contest, and it’s going to involve a lot of commitment. I’m entering in around five categories, one of them might possibly be the novel category. This is going to be a significant part of my year, so I’m wondering if I should track how many hours I spend working on this so I can emphasize it on any applications I have? I imagine spending 100+ hours completing my five entries. The novel is going to take me at least 40+ hours, and on top of that I still have to edit. For three of my other entries, I’m creating short stories from scratch, so it’s going to take a while too. For my last possible entry, I’m going edit something I’ve already written and enter that (yes, it’s allowed.)

So, if anyone could give me advice on anything I mentioned, that would be amazing. Some people have already started school, so tell me what’s happened and how it’s been.

@sumobats, Welcome!
Don’t limit yourself to fiction. Broaden your horizon makes you a better fiction writer. to write a good fiction, you need to experience LIFE. so I’d suggest choose some clubs of your interest, and actively participate and have fun, make friends. etc. ect. Of course all these are now on paper. I am waiting for the experience myself.

Ifax: The first time trial is over for me. We have 5 5ks, one per day between now and Thursday. I had 22:35

Nice job Political! 22:35 is a solid time. I’m probably not going to be able to run for the beginning of the season because I just hurt my shin. I think it’ll take a few weeks to recover. When I have my first time trial, I’ll tell you how it goes. And, tell me how your races go! Good luck in XC.

Thanks. I just had my SECOND Time trial. I went a little slower this time, so 22:54, if I can get it under 20, I’ll make varsity.

The reason is that the course is so easy to run. How do you run your time trial?

So, I just wanted to post in here cause I remember that I actually found this website the summer beforee I started high school, which should be where you guys are, and it’s CRAZYYY that time’s gone by this fast. I’m gonna be a Junior now, and it’s all just beeen too quick.
Have fun in high school you guys, and starting out strong is the best thing you can do!
