At my school we aren’t allowed to double up on math classes. Everyone who is good a math has to follow this sequence: Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra 2, Honors Pre Calc and then AP Calc as a senior. There is an online AP Stat option, but the last person who did that was 8th in his class and dropped down to 20th after making a C. No one has the guts to do it now.

I agree with LutherStetzer. I ama huge critic of the American education system.

No CHild Left Behind should be renamed Every Child Left Behind.

I read the table of contents for the precalculus textbook and saw that almost everything is the same except for trignometric functions! This angers me very much because I could probably pass the exam without even knowing them. here is a link for those of you who would want to learn a math EVEN THOUGH THE SCHOOL SYSTEMS WILL NOT LET YOU!! Lol.

Also, do any of you think that if I get a really good score on the Pre calculus clep exam, they will let me go to Calculus?

@yerhs: I would say so.

I had considered taking CLEPs, but colleges don’t consider them for admission purposes. AT my school, the math system is too rigid making it pointless.

Sounds good, thanks! :)

I doubled up math this year. In middle school we were not given chance to do geometry. So this year I took geometry and algebra II. In both classes I’ve got above 100 in all four quarters. (with extra credit.) I didn’t even think about skipping though. Maybe I should have. Oh well. it’s okay. I’ll do precalc next year. Junior year I’ll do AP calc. I think AP chem and APUSH will keep me busy enough in sophomore year.

*ImNotSoAmbitious" lol

Yeah, the earliest track we could get on at our school was Algebra 1 in 8th grade.

Now, I can’t say that I had the potential to do calculus in 7th grade, lol. But if the school had allowed for me (and many other people) to take Algebra 1 in 7th, 6th, or maybe even 5th grade, I probably would have been able to do it.

They just changed the curriculum track in my school district, so my brother, who is a rising 8th grader, will be able to AP Calculus BC his sophomore year. I only get to take it in my junior year. Oh well.

any students of '15 from Canada?

Is there AP calc AB? what is AP Calc BC?

Hey guys! I’m new to the thread & I need some advice:

I’m taking the Math 1 Subject Test next Saturday & I’m taking the Physics Sub. Test in Sept/Oct/Nov (don’t think I’m that prepared for it), should I be taking any more?

What should I be doing this summer? I’m taking an Architecture class at NJIT, volunteering & working at the local ice-cream shop. I want to start preparing for classes next year, studying for the PSATs/ SATs, that Physics SAT, and (is this weird?) learning Chinese. (self-teaching)

Any study tips for finals? Mine start the 15! :O

Thanks :)

i have a tip for finals… the key is to READ, READ, READ! Lol. Just read as much as you can and make sure you read out loud. When you do this, you are making your mind work more; therefore, remembering the facts. I do this with my notes except I make them sloppy so they are very hard to read. This makes me actually try to understand the words and stuff. It is weird but it works!

Wow columbia you’re taking a lot of SAT subjects! Good for you. I plan to take two at the end of next school year. They will be the subjects I’ll do AP on.

@yerhs52, thanks! I’m going to start that as soon as my final project is over. (my social studies & english teachers decided to have a combined HUGE final project instead exams, so that’s a nice time-waster -__-)
@nomatterwhat, I just want to get all the tests over with while I still know the info, I usually forget everything I know within a year of learning it!
@LutherSetzer, thanks for the link! I was thinking about using my state’s virtual school, but I want to talk to my guidance counselor first. also, that’s a great suggestion. I’ll try it out when I’m studying for the subject test & finals!

@columbia: You should definitely give online learning a try! I absolutely love it :). Especially since my school doesn’t have the capabilities to offer a lot of AP classes.

It is really laid back and great to have minimal distractions! Do you happen to know your school’s online provider?

My school’s is FLVS. does anybody know it? I’ve never taken anything from them yet.

@nomatterwhat: I have heard it’s a pretty good program. It’s the most used online learning site in the country. So people must like it . I was considering taking AP Chemistry or AP Physics B through FLVS since my school does not offer either of them.

@nate, sounds good. I may have to take AP physics online, but that’s junior year. Next year I’ll take AP chem - at least my school offers that.

@nomatterwhat: Lucky! I really like Chemistry. I don’t live in Flordia so I would have to pay for the class. Unless I say i’m a homeschooled student and use my uncle’s address.
