High School Class of 2015

Reaches: HYPS, MIT, CalTech, Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, UPenn/Wharton-Huntsman Program(My Dream School!), Williams, Swarthmore, Amherst, UChicago, Cornell

Matches: Duke, Rice, JHU, Northwestern, Pomona, Middlebury, Georgetown, Vanderbilt, UMich, UVA, UCLA, UCB, USC, Claremont McKenna, WUSTL, Tufts, UNC-CH, Carnegie Mellon, UT Austin

Safeties: UDel Honors, Drexel, Haverford, Boston College, Miami, Wesleyan, Case Western, Indiana, Washington and Lee, Brandeis, American, Emory

LOL, I have looked at a lot of these schools, and I like them. Some of these on there I have put on because I know people that like them. I have diverse interests and I not picky at all. Somehow this list will be shortened by senior year.

Seth- do you think I could self- study? I won’t have room in my schedule anytime from now to graduation.

Not to be mean but you really should’t be identifying schools as reaches, matches, or safeties just yet. Saying schools like Emory are a safety to you when you’ve completed less than 1/4th of your HS career isn’t very accurate. Grades change, test scores come in, etc.

We’re all actually going into 10th grade…
Plus, I can’t speak for everyone else, but I’ve already taken the SAT.

Me too! I took it in seventh grade. Heh.

@ImSoAmbitious: You have Duke, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern and Vandy as matches?? Hmmm…

Looking at my schools stats, I would consider them matches. Maybe Duke should go into the reach category, but I think the others should be matches. A match would be any school above a 50/50 shot? Yeah, Rob is right, It is really early to be categorizing them. However, I am pretty involved in ECs and already have my SAT and projected GPA.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Duke shouldn’t be a match for anyone, since it is in the top 10 according to USA Today. How are Vandy’s and JHU’s acceptance rates? I plan on applying to those schools as well.

Vandy is as difficult to get in as Emory. JHU is like Duke. Thanks for rating my ECs guys :D.

Safety schools should be schools where you are almost guaranteed a spot (90% chance or higher, I’d say) and is financially available for you. Putting a top 20 schools as a safety is pretty crazy. Really, unless you are really (and I mean really) hooked, a top 20 school should never be a safety. I’m not as familiar with LACs, but I think Haverford is a top 10 LAC. Washington & Lee and Wesleyan are top 15 schools too, I think. And you have them marked as safeties. They could be low matches, but I don’t think anyone should peg as top 20 school or top 10 LAC as a safety, especially after only being in HS for one year.

Don’t get me wrong, dude - I’ve seen some of your stats and you look really really good so far. But just don’t start counting your chickens before they hatch. I might agree with putting down some of the schools you have listed as matches as matches if you have higher than a 2200 SAT. If you have less than that, then schools like Vandy, JHU, Northwestern, Duke, etc. would probably not be matches.

Yes i guess you should if u dont have any room in ur schedule
But i would also buy a guide book like Barons or Princeton Review.
I took the AP Human Geography exam last May and Princeton Review helped me A TON.

Yeah, I understand. My SAT score is 2340 without any preparation, so I will be doing some preparation Junior Year in order to get a perfect score. I think this will allow me to qualify those schools as matches.

Hey guys! Haven’t been on here in a while! Anyone want to help me figure out what else to do?

ECs:
Volunteering at a museum (I just started and I have like O hrs :O)

taking a Lang course over the summer online
Secretary for Key Club
Colleges:
Columbia (one can only dream)
Harvard (OH YES.)
if not Ivys, I’m stuck at the local state school -_-
Also, I’ve started studying for the PSATs, since I’m like the “only smart if I try super hard” kind of person…
I really want to be a journalist or an engineer (I know like polar opposites) and I really want to go to Columbia (we’re practically soul mates), any advice/ things I should do?

Oh and I do Soccer and Indian Classical Dance!

Do what you like to do, what you are passionate about. Thats all it is to it. Do what you enjoy and convey how meaningful it is to colleges when the time comes. It sounds to easy, I know, but just work hard at work you are doing and seek out opportunities in what you are passionate about.

Ex. If you like science you could enter competitions, Science Olympiad, Science Fair, Intern at a Lab, etc…
If you like journalism, you could write for your schools newspaper, intern with your local newspaper, enter essay contests, write a novel, etc…

LOL, I just thought of this stuff from the top of my head. It’s not too hard. reach out to friends, teachers, adults, your school, Google, CC. Use your social skills and start networking.

And a general question to everyone in the thread, are you guys doing any cool internships? If so, tell us about them on the thread. I think its interesting to see what everyone else is up to.

I will be interning at a psychiatric health clinic, a local investment firm, a local political campaign, and hopefully at a hospital(shadowing) later this summer.

No cool internships yet. What do you think the minimum age companies allow interns to be is?

Alot of places don’t have a set age. If you give them a resume and explain why you want one, you should be able to get one in some capacity.

Hey everyone, I’m also in the class of 2015(: I honestly took the time yesterday and today to read ALL of the posts here. Lol, I felt it was necessary. Anyways, it’s great to know I’m not the only rising sophomore who’s very interested in going to college.

Here are my schedules…
Advanced (AP)/Dual Enrollment > High Honors (HH) > Honors (H) > College (C) > Nonweighted (N)

9th grade:
HH English 1
H Algebra 1 (eh, aha)
H Biology (this was two periods every other day, there’s a red day/grey day schedule at my school)
H World History
H Latin 1
N Seminar (I had this class whenever I had only one period of bio)
N Phys. Ed. 1&2 / N Health A

10th grade:
HH English 2
HH Geometry & Analytical Geometry
HH Algebra 2 & Trigonometry (I’m doubling up on math so I can get right to AP Calculus AB junior year)
H Chemistry
AP U.S. History 1: 1492-1812/ 1812-1877 (Junior year I’ll have to take AP U.S. History 2: 1877+1929/1929- Present, and then I’ll take the AP test for the overall courses towards the end of junior year)
H Latin 2
N Phys. Ed. (Honors lab – alternates with chemistry…I have gym every other day)

My school doesn’t allow freshmen to take AP courses, and the only AP course available sophomore year is U.S. History.

I’m also in a “school within a school” (lol, that’s not literally the program’s name). It’s a rigorous program that you test into in 8th grade to begin in 9th grade, and you also have to get recommendations, certain grades, etc. The program also requires us to take Latin for 2 years (Gahh, if we didn’t have to, I’d probably be taking Spanish!). I think it’s preparing me well for university level work.

Sorry my post was kinda long…

Also sorry for being WICKED LATE in joining.
