@texanhowler I’ve seen it on College board. I’m not sure if it’s worth it not yet. I’m not sure if Ivy Leagues would just give away 4-8 credit seminar credit hours. If they do, then I’d say it’s worth it.

@TeamRocketGrunt Thank you for making that thread.

For my fellow chem people: What fish is made of only 2 sodium atoms?
2 Na.

@TeamRocketGrunt - Thanks for making a thread! Checking it out later. (:

Ahh, I think CC is eating up my posts- I swore I replied to everyone last night! =P

@TeamRocketGrunt: <33 Thank you!

@texanhowler: I’m not really sure what to think of this AP Capstone program thing they have going on. I’m thinking that if you’re really interested in it, talk to you counselor about it and try to get a grip on what the course might look like. I’d also ask the teacher who’s going to be running it what he/she have in mind regarding the course. And if you go on any college visits this summer, I’d definitely ask colleges about it as well!

@catchinginfinity: lol.

I’m now slooowly leaning towards taking not only AP Stats as an elective (along with AP Calc AB for my main math) but Physics 1 AP. They divided Phsyics up into two courses, so I would theoretically take AP Physics 2 AP senior year. But I’m not sure if my schedule is going to be too much for me then…

gUYS our regional science olympiad competition was today and I got first in two of my events and second in my other one!
probably because there were only like 2 teams competing in JV hahah

@Almondjoy7 - AP Stats is super easy, I’m sure you’ll be able to manage it if that’s what you’re worried about!

@loltired - Congrats! I feel so unaccomplished compared to you wow…first an 800, now three awards. Btw, which science olympiad are you in (there’s more than one where I live)?

@catchinginfinity I felt so bad because I didn’t have notes for any of the events that allowed notes or a binder or a field guide and especially for entomology, we went in with half the insect list that I copied down from the website during my free period. But honestly, I just checked and there were only 4 JV teams competing at my regional lolol. The other two JV teams probably didn’t even have people in the events I was in because it was literally so terrible. For entomology, I’m pretty sure the only bug I got right was the Monarch butterfly and I was struggling with that. I’m in the normal? science olympiad. We don’t have biology or physics or chemistry olympiad here, it’s just science.

@loltired - Procrastination for the win …but seriously, I did this speech competition with 0 prep last year (literally wrote speech the night before and memorized on the bus) and got 1st place, and this year prepped for a week and got second.
My school has SciO (science olympiad) and science bowl (we also have ocean bowl, but that’s obviously only marine science). They’re both pretty much the same thing and the exact same people are in both clubs, we just get to go to different events.

@loltired The people who were suppose to do entomology didn’t come that day for our group, so I was placed in there. I knew almost none of the answers you had to write out. The multiple choice was fine though. I got last (well 16/20 but only because the rest of the teams didn’t show). After looking at the test, I’m considering doing it next year, because the questions didn’t seem that difficult.

@loltired: YAYAY CONGRATS! You’ve been kicking some serious academic butt lately. ;)

@catchinginfinity: Phew, that is seriously awesome to hear! I’ve already done Calc [through Kumon] when I was younger, so it’s awesome to hear my two math classes next year are going to be very easy. I’m pretty worried about Physics though. I’m really going back and forth about whether or not I want to take it.

@catchinginfinity + @loltired: How does olympiad work where you guys live? Despite my school being such an academically competitive school, we have like 0 academic competitions like olympiad, despite being in the suburbs of a really large city, too. I was thinking of starting a Bio Olympiad Team next year, but I’m so unfamiliar with the concept of olympiad that it seems daunting…

@gbrl10 wait do we live in the same state because i think we do but i can’t remember
my partner was supposed to bring the field guide but she just like left and didn’t bring anything sigh. there were stations for entomology at my regional and only about 1/5 of the questions were multiple choice
the few words i copied down beforehand were really useful but i feel like it would have been so much easier with a book or even the complete list of bugs

@almondjoy7 well at my school, we do science olympiad and I’m pretty sure that’s it… maybe an envirobowl or something but I’m not sure. we have 3 teams, varsity, jv1, and jv1, and 18 people on each team. Most people compete in 2-4 events about a variety of different topics. You should talk to your science teachers about that, it seems like a really good idea! Maybe find out if there’s a competition near you and find a friend who will help you start it up? I’m thinking about starting a Chem Olympiad team next year because apparently they have a competition in my town that I never knew about… . and the teacher who coordinates science olympiad is the chem and ap chem teacher and I think she would be okay with sponsoring it

@loltired I live in North Carolina (Wake County), and I assume you do too since you applied to NCSSM. I had notes given to me, but they were notes for division B. It only helped with the station that talked about the different mouth and tails of bugs, which was like 2 :-P.

@Almondjoy7 - Our science bowl and ocean bowl is open to anyone who wants to join, but you have to take a test to qualify for the science olympiad. My school is super puny though so pretty much everyone gets into the olympiad because those who “aren’t good enough” usually don’t even want to join in the first place haha. There’s this really big competition in Pennsylvania that we go to each year for science olympiad, and a couple small ones we go to for science bowl. Each of us is responsible for a super specific topic (mine was trees last year) and we basically just peruse through around 10 textbooks in the 7 or 8 months we have before the competition. We have meetings, but I don’t really go to them…they aren’t super important in my school because we self-study at home; meetings are just to clarify competition dates, hand out extra material, and sometimes practice buzzer questions.

You should definitely start an olympiad! I’m not sure how you would go about starting from scratch and signing up for local competitions…it’s a lot easier just to create a chapter that’s part of a larger science organization imo (like NOSB).

The only Olympiads I’m interested in are USABO, USNCO, USAPhO, and USAMO. I’d never make USAMO though :(

@TeamRocketGrunt Out of curiosity, did you take the AMC10 (or 12) last year? (sorry for jacking the '16 thread…)

@elf4EVA: Nope. I have the AMC 10 they administered last year, though. A friend gave it to me, but I haven’t taken it yet. I looked through some of the problems, though.

Addendum to my previous post: fairly certain I won’t make physics either. Just tried to do some problems; couldn’t solve a single one. Yay for not ever having a physics class!

^Erm, I’d presume that you wouldn’t be able to solve a physics problem, much less one from USAPhO, if you’ve never learned physics before. You shouldn’t declare that you’re not good at something if you’ve never even been exposed to it before. :P

Sorry for the double post, but is anyone taking physics right now?

Do you think it would be wise to drop APUSH and take AP Biology instead? I have heard AP Biology looks MUCH MUCH more rigorous!

Also, most smart ppl (the upper 10%) of my grade will be taking 2 Science AP’s by the time they graduate so I thought only to improve my chances, I should follow suit and ALSO taking 2 APs, with AP Bio in junior year.

However, I have heard AP Bio is the toughest AP at my school, 1:30 hrs of HW per night on average!

Any ideas? PLZ

@texanhowler
I don’t think it really matters which one you take. They both sound pretty rigorous to me no matter what. But if you really want to take AP Bio…But if you drop APUSH, are you not taking a social studies next year then?
