@observeraffect
I passed but it dropped me to an 89
@afroninja26
Mine from 4.0 to trash

guys its important to keep in mind that 3rd quarter b’s can be turned to GPA A’s if you can offset the mean.

85% third quarter and 95% 4th quarter = 4.0!

Of course, this doesnt mean if you get a 79% that you should be not worried and think you are going to get a 101% next quarter

Out of all my classes I have a B+ in Spanish 3, I’m alright though, my teacher is nice but she gives a crap ton of work. And she only speaks Spanish. She gives people with good grades an A most of the time if they ask, but I’m trying to get a well deserved A.

Thank FSM my school is really easy to maintain a perfect UW GPA in.

@DHCP6768UDP Yeah, I’m going to need it to bring up my average (got an 88 in PreCalc this quarter). Though, in my case, I have to get an A on the final exam.

Anyone looked at summer programs yet?

I have Upward Bound for six weeks in the summer. I don’t think I’m doing any other academic program. I’m full hispanic (Colombian) so I might have a good chance for MITES next year. Really hoping I can get in.

@hailbo Good luck with your endeavors!

I was also looking for anyone going to the HOBY Seminar. It is for Sophomores only, so this is our only chance.

@Woandering: this summer for me will be research and maybe a trip to China (my dad wants to take me, but I may not be able to go if I have too much work).

I will be applying to RSI next year, though.

@Woandering - I’ve been looking since December. I’ve heard great things about HOBY from a guy at school who did it two years ago, but I’m not too interested in going into the business/econ field. At this point, I’m most likely going to do a research internship in the city; I applied to a math camp but it’s pretty much already crossed off my list because a) it’s a little too long and b) I’m probably not even going to get in.

@catchinginfinity College-wise, HOBY is great, because it has some selectivity (3 per school), and it’s really short. I would suggest you still do it, no matter which field you go in. Even if you take away nothing from it, it can help you in college apps.

HOBY aside, how do you get internships? I think internships is easily the best use of time during summer, because you get to learn and experience a little work and perhaps responsibility. But, everywhere I look, internships are usually poor excuses of an internship (more like a summer program) or only available to undergrads.

I think good internships arent usually advertised. I read a thread about research and lab experience for high school and most had to email professors.

Yepp, so I’m more interested in business and finance, and when I try to contact businesses, the response is always internships are for undergrads. I’m thinking you need some sort of connection to get a good internship.

I live really close to Cal Tech, It would be nice to get some lab experience there. If not I wouldnt mind getting lab experience at a local community college. I would imagine it would be hard trying to get a high school internship for anything without connections. I highly doubt Cal Tech would accept a regular high school kid. What kinda businesses are you looking to intern at?

@woandering: I’m a business person, as well. Well, I’m both STEM and business; I’m doing my research work so I can get a few patents and whatnot. I really want to be the next Elon Musk, though.

I sometimes think of that but I’ve moved from engineering to pure science lately. I was really interested in econ but it went away.

The only summer program I’m really looking into is the Brown PreCollege program. Brown is my number one choice so far and I’m very attracted to their PreCollege program

@TeamRocketGrunt if you don’t mind sharing, what type of research work are you doing and how are you doing it?

@hailbo I’m interested in finance, so probably banking or currency exchange shops. I’ve worked at my Uncle’s currency exchange and transfer shop (connections :p), but I would like to get into a bank or an intern with no connections, to kind of prove my worth.

@afroninja26 not to be discouraging, but Brown PreCollege is one of those programs that are earning money and not unique or selective in any way. I used to love their summer program, and I still love Brown, but there are so many money making summer programs that aren’t really worth it. If you think you can connect with a professor, then by all means do so. But, if you’re just looking at learning something or somehow influencing your college chances, this program won’t help too much. You can learn the same things at other places for a much cheaper price, and admissions officers, even at Brown, won’t be too impressed by you spending a lot of money to go to such a program. Again, I don’t want to be too discouraging, if you truly love their program for some unique reason, but I think it fair you know that there are cheaper programs for similar experiences.

Quick question for everyone here. As we are all choosing our classes, is it better to choose a class that I am interested in or an AP that I have little interests in? College-wise.

I really want to take Speech and Law and Order, but I do have the opportunity to switch that out for AP Human Geo/Government/Enviro or whatever.

@woandering: I do work in cancer and diabetes with two professors here.
