High school class of 2016

@Woandering
How many APs are you taking and which colleges are you striving for?

@TeamRocketGrunt Wow, that is impressive.

So about researching in general, did you need a lot of prior experience or are you there to learn? I want, if possible, to do some research regarding mainly wearable tech that directly interact with the body (think Skull Vibration Headphones), but I know next to nothing about that sort of the stuff.

@SwaggyC I took AP Macro and Micro this year, before I heard it was an easy class. Next year, I’m aiming for AP Lit, may or may not be allowed to take it. I’ll also take AP Calc BC and AP Chinese. I plan to complete 8 APs by the end of High School. Why? And any suggestions on how to improve my plan?

@SwaggyC Sorry, I didn’t answer your other question. My highest goal is Harvard, although my favorite is UPenn Wharton, if only it is a little easier than Harvard (I think). My other favorites are WUSTL, Brown, University of Rochester, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor Ross School of Business, and Case Western Reserve. Again, why do you ask?

@Woandering
Those schools tend to want the most rigorous schedule possible. 3 APs isn’t bad junior year especially if you can pull out straight As. I’d take the class your interested in but keep in mind Human Geo and Enviro are stupid easy classes.

@SwaggyC What grade are you in? And what’s your AP schedule? I’m honestly disappointed in how I have planned, but my school has quite a few stupid requirements (especially for our class since they keep changing) which prevents me from taking more.

@Woandering
I’m in 10th grade right now
9th grade I only took AP Human Geo since that’s all we could take
This year I am taking AP Chemistry AP World History and AP Calc A (1 semester class)
11th grade probably AP Computer Science AP Calc BC AP Psychology and AP Biology
I’m not sure about 12th grade but I’ll have four so I’d have 12 when I graduate.

Make sure you’re not over exerting yourself because Grades># of APs. I somehow managed a 4.0 uw last semester but I’m super stressed and working my ass off for lower results this semester. I miss 9th grade :(

@Woandering: I had no prior experience, but I told my professors my intention was to use the projects for ISEF or ISTS. They told me if I wanted to do an independent project, I’d have to create a research proposal. For my cancer work, I started with an idea and read relevant papers until I had a unique contribution in mind. I finished my cancer proposal last week, actually. As for diabetes, it’s proving a bit more difficult to come up with an idea.

I’m actually looking into inventing some kind of novel wearable tech; I have no idea what, though.

I think I’m taking 9, 2 this year, 3 next year and 4 senior year. I could take 4 next year but AP English Lang at my school is a complete joke. I would rather take the Honors class with the teacher that teaches AP Lit. I really want to go to Stanford or MIT. They’re both big reaches for me but being Latino helps a lot.

For the question about whether its interest or AP I would pick interest. I love math and science. I also like to have hard classes. I would take AP English or AP Psychology but I hear they are very easy and I’m generally uninterested in both of them.

As for APs, I’m taking two (self studying one) currently, will take two junior year (stats and chem), and one senior year (physics C). My courses will also contain multivariate calculus, since I’m self studying AP cal bc currently. I’ll also take some “for fun” courses (number theory, game theory, organic chem, biochem).

@TeamRocketGrunt
Tbh I thought you’d be taking like 16 AP courses

Do you go to a good high school? People at my school won’t even sign up for AP Chemistry, that would be really cool if I could take game theory and organic chem at my school.

@SwaggyC: nah lol. I only take courses I’m interested in when it comes to AP. I don’t really care about env. sci or psych or w/e, so I won’t be taking them. Not taking a ton of AP also opens up a lot of free time for me to pursue what I want to pursue which, currently, is research and dreaming up ideas for a company I want to start. I want to be the next Elon Musk, as I said above.

@halibo: currently, no. My high school is horrible, but I am transferring to my state’s math/sci academy after this year, and I’ll have access to a lot of cool stuff. There’s stuff like CS I (programming/computer principles), CS II, Foundations of Western Thought (philosophy, basically), differential equations, game theory, discrete mathematics, astrophysics, electronics (building tech), mentorship options, and research work that counts as a credit for a science.

@TeamRocketGrunt does that mean you will be working independently with your idea? I thought the whole point was to work with a professor? In any case, you sound really advanced, with proposals and research. Good luck with whatever happens!

@TeamRocketGrunt
I probably should be doing that. My life would be a lot more fun and productive.

@Woandering: not exactly. Usually when you hear of a prof/high school student relationship, the HS student essentially does grunt work for the prof and may get like fourth author on a paper. An independent project is one that a student does under a prof, but it’s mostly the student’s work. Kind of like a PhD research project; the grad student does most of the work with the professor’s guidance. That’s essentially what I’m doing here. I’ve got a year to start and finish this cancer project as well as a diabetes project, so I dunno if I’ll get done. If I don’t, I can kiss my chances of schools like Harvard goodbye.

@SwaggyC: it’s actually much more lenient. My main problem is: I’m a huge procrastinator, so I often waste the free time I’m allowed with my relatively lax schedule.

Me too, I should really do some physics stuff with all of the time that I have. I can’t do all of the hard calculus physics but maybe get into learning some concepts early and playing around with astronomy. I really wanna get really into the stuff I would like to do in my future.

@TeamRocketGrunt; When you become the next Elon Musk, I want a shout-out in your speech when you announce something super kick butt like the Hyperloop. (I had to do SO MUCH research about Elon Musk for one of my many debate speeches, haha)

To whoever asked earlier: I’m taking six APs next year. I’m trying to decide between APES and AP Physics for my 6th one, though. I’m already going to be taking Calc and Stat (math is easy for me though, because I did Kumon as a child), along with AP Chem (which is notoriously one of the hardest APs at my school). I’m just not sure how much I can handle.

I got sucked into the chances forum today too. =P No bueno. That always makes me worries about my ECs.

I’ve actually decided to prep for USNCO and USAPhO starting over the summer. Initially, I’d planned for USABO and USNCO, but doing USNCO and USAPhO would be more beneficial, I think, because I’m really weak in physics even though I’d like to major in it. Besides, problem solving>memorization.

@Almondjoy7: you’re baaaaaaaaaaack! Lol, my chances of becoming the next Musk are quite slim, tbh. I’m not nearly as intelligent as he; if I do become the next EM, though, I’ll definitely give you a shoutout. ;)

Should I take the AP chem exam If I wouldn’t even study for it or transfer the credits? I feel like it’s just a waste of 89$ but everybody I ask says I should take it.
