High school class of 2016

@Woandering - Not going to lie, I got my internship partly because of connections, too…:stuck_out_tongue: Hastag NYU represent whooo

@afroninja26 - I just want to counteract what other people are saying about pre-college programs here and say that the one at Brown is pretty much the ONLY slightly-credible one I know of. Forget about the ones at Columbia and Harvard and Stanford, but the Brown Pre-College program actually has a really good rep. That being said, it’s not as impressive on apps per say than a super-selective summer program, but it’s better than staying home and doing nothing, especially if you want to go to Brown. I know this guy that was a senior last year and he went the summer of junior year, too, and got into Brown ED. Obviously that wasn’t the reason he got in, but that’s how he initially fell in love with Brown. ^.^

@TeamRocketGrunt - YOU GUYS HAVE A NUMBER THEORY CLASS?!?! I am beyond jealous oh my god why is my school so lame and tiny

@TeamRocketGrunt: I am baaaack. Getting really sick + debate + a bombardment of homework just does not add up well. =P And I definitely think you’re intelligent and dedicated enough to become the next EM!

ALSO, have all these Olympiad teams been a part of your school for a while? My school doesn’t have ANY Olympiad teams, and I’m thinking of starting up USABO at my school.

@SwaggyC: I wouldn’t take it if you’re not going to study for it. However, if you’ve been doing well in the class, then you might as well just study at least a little, and then take it to get a 4 or a 5? I feel like if you’re going through the class, you might as well go for the exam.

@catchinginfinity: Ughh, I wish I had connections. I really want to do some sort of research.

@Almondjoy7 - Aw, most people don’t have connections but still get to do research! You could always just email professors, they’re literally everywhere! (:

Btw, does anyone know the game 2048? It’s been surfacing around the internet for awhile now, but here’s the original version if you don’t know what I’m talking about: http://gabrielecirulli.github.io/2048/</a>
Today I just discovered the MIT version and I’m having an aneurysm: <a href=“Redirecting to GetMIT”>http://mitchellgu.github.io/GetMIT/</a>
It’s glorious.

@catchinginfinity: lol yeah, we do. Our class size will also be pretty small (100-150 people per grade; 300 overall) so we will get a lot of individualized attention from teachers.

@almondjoy7: hopefully lol. Musk took baby steps first, though (PayPal); I think I’ve figured out what my baby step will be. I’ll start working on it pretty soon.

For the Olympiads, you don’t have to have a team. The test is taken by each individual person; multiple people from your school can take the exam if they wish. At my current school, no one even knows what the Olympiads are; at the math/sci academy, there are a few who take one or two each year.

@catchinginfinity: I’m lucky to live in a pretty large area, so I think that would be an option. But I’m not sure what kind of project I’d like to do. Did you email professors saying you had a specific project/research idea in mind, or did you email them just asking if you could help them out?

@TeamRocketGrunt: I’m really excited to see what your “baby step” is!

And for the Olympiads, don’t you have to get your school to administer it? So would that not require creating a team or something like that?

@almondjoy7: I’ll be improving a piece of software, basically. Apple bought this particular one for 70 million, but I’ll improve it a ton and hopefully Apple will buy mine (or, Apple’s competitor, Microsoft).

As long as you pay the registration fee, your school can administer it. Whether it does that is up to the officials at your school; for example, your school may have a rule that at least five people must sign up. Here, if you want to take it, the school will administer it as long as you pay the registration.

I’ll put together a guide to research pretty soon. I’ll let you know when it’s up.

@TeamRocketGrunt: So flipping cool. I’ve always wished I could go into programming, but it’s just not my thing. Graphic design is far as I get in that realm. =P

I’m going to ask my GC about this Olympiad thing. I was under the impression that it had to be an actual school event for me to take the test. If that’s not the case, then I won’t really bother starting a team. Maybe starting an 'Olympiad" team would look good though… Not sure yet.

I’m definitely looking forward to the research guide. You’re so full of information, haha.

@Almondjoy7: if you’re good at design, I could use your help. I can handle the programming aspect of my idea just fine, but the design (I want to make it really nice looking) is where I’ll have a challenge. We can team up on it and, if it sells, split the profits 50/50.

Also, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/1629448-teamrocketgrunt-s-general-guide-to-getting-involved-in-research.html?new=1</a></p>

@TeamRocketGrunt: Designing is something that I’ve been meaning to really take to the next level, but I just really haven’t been motivated because it’s something I do when the inspiration strikes. If you want to give me more details about what you’re looking for though, go ahead, and I’ll see what i can do. I just got Adobe Elements and I’ve been tinkering around with it. I’d just gotten really good with GIMP, but I wanted to take it to the next level.

And thank you for the guide! <3

//

This is my week of death. One test every day for the rest of the week, and in WHAP, our test now includes WW1, WW2, the Cold War, and the Depression ALL DONE IN THREE CHAPTERS. Like what the heck. It’s too much.

@Almondjoy7 At least you have WHAP. Our school only has APUSH, which is (to me) really boring. World or Euro history is so much more interesting.

Is no one here going to HOBY? It is for Sophomores only, so again, it’s our only chance.

@woandering: I find HOBY to be a waste of time.

@TeamRocketGrunt How so?

It does prove, at the very least, you were one of the most advanced/liked/valuable student at your school in Sophomore year when it comes to college application, and it’s only a few days long.

gonna stay up all night woooooo
this wasn’t relevant at all

@Woandering: it is not at all hard to get into. To prove this (and because my friend dared me to), I applied for it, purposely did a mediocre application, and I was given my school’s spot. I’m not going to do it, though, so the alternate will be going in my place.

While it may prove that “you were one of the most…,” I believe that winning/doing well at something statewide or national is a much better investment in time; also, you don’t need to prove you’re one of the most advanced if you actually are one of the most advanced. It should shine through fairly clearly in the other parts your application.

@TeamRocketGrunt While it clearly isn’t the best thing to do, it does add a little “best”-ness to your college app. I’m emphasizing the fact that it is only a few days long (which is personally valuable because most of my summer is on an orchestra tour), so it is adding something to your resume without taking up too much of your time.

In your experiment, the school actually chooses the students, and your school would know you better than HOBY. I’m pretty sure the school overlooked your mediocre application (perhaps putting it down to lack of time) and used their previous experience with you as a reason for letting you go.

@Woandering: eh. Your points are valid enough, but I’d rather invest those few days in writing up a research proposal or something useful.

//

Facebook is on a buying spree. They just agreed to acquire Oculus VR (the group working on a virtual reality headset).

@Woandering: I actually think WHAP is very interesting, it’s just that we get these obscene 80 question open-response study guides to do for every chapters, and we all spend so much time just looking for answers that I’m doing terribley on the quizzes. :confused: I do think it’ll be better than APUSH next year. All the information, especially now that we’re going through stuff like the Cold War, is super neat.

@TeamRocketGrunt: I kind of wish I had the time/dedication to actually fill out a mediocre application for something I didn’t even want to do. =P It does prove a good point though.

@Almondjoy7: I filled the application out during third period :stuck_out_tongue:

The essays were laughably bad, too LOL

What AP tests are easy enough to self study, all in one year along with school. I’m thinking Stat and HuGe. Is Psych also easy enough to self study? I’d prefer it to HuGe.

@TeamRocketGrunt: HAHA, perfect. We don’t have stuff like this or I would so do that. :wink:
