High school class of 2016

@peytonmg‌ Hey
If you guys found out the teacher who only had 2 passing kids in her calc AB class might be teaching your intended math class (calc BC in this case) what would you do?

@SwaggyC Based on TeamRocketGrunt’s advice, self study it. Perhaps, you could take a free period to help you self study it, but I wouldn’t risk that teacher. This could eventually become a small example within a college app essay.

Is anyone thinking about colleges yet? Some of my friends have visited a few and are forming lists. My favorite so far is Claremont McKenna.

@Woandering‌
My favorite has been UCLA for a while. After that it’s UCB, UMICH, and UCSB.
And technically I have to take 3rd year math so I wouldn’t know what to take.

@SwaggyC Is AP Stat available? I know that actually might seem a little stupid, though. Did her students fail the AP Exam or just get really bad grades in her class? If the former, you could take her class and do massive amounts of self-study. If the latter, DO NOT take the class for any reason.

What’s your intended area of study? I don’t understand why some people like UCLA over UCB. Does UCLA have any programs that are better than UCB? BTW, are you counting UMich as a match or reach? I like that school too.

@Woandering‌
I think they fail the class and fail the ap exam. I think the only reason she’s employed is her PHD. Funny because I’m dealing with a crappy teacher who has a PHD for AP chem too right now.

Lately I haven’t been too sure but I’ve been interested in computer science for a while. I live UCLA more for a variety of reasons: I live in SoCal, I’m a Bruin fan (athletics matter to me), and the area is better. Other than that I’m not sure there’s any gap between the two. UMICH might be a reach for me because I’m OOS but my stats are above average for admitted students.

@SwaggyC so yeah, if her grading is going to affect you, try to find a way out of it.

I live in NorCal :slight_smile: so I suppose I may be a little biased. I prefer smaller schools than the UCs anyway. UMich may be a little big too. I mainly liked their business programs. Have you looked at Harvey Mudd? It’s right near LA too, with a great CS program.

@Woandering‌
My mom loves that school but I’m more into the bigger schools with D1 athletics.

SwaggyC, try to get out of the class and self-study. I took APCS knowing every kid got a 1 on the exam except for 4 people last year due to the teacher. Biggest mistake of my life. The only thing my teacher has taught me is how to keep my mouth shut when someone is spouting utter bs.

Question: What is the limit of APs your school encourages students to take? For example, my school doesnt encourage taking more than 3…If you do want more than 3 you must get some sort of approval from your parents and counselor (kinda like signing your life over :)) :)) haha) I’ve been reading threads all over this website of kids planning to take 6-7 APs in one school year, and I’m just bewildered. But yeah, could any of you guys answer me this? Just curious. Thanks!

Is anyone stressing over AP tests right now?

@swiftyfan13x‌
I’m only taking two tests this year, but I’m stressing because Biology.

@PoisonIvy20‌
There are people at my school that take five or six in Junior year, and the guidance office doesn’t really care if the student is smart. I think if they see your past grades and “deem you unworthy,” they might say something. I also had a friend who couldn’t get our English teacher to sign the class sign up sheet for AP Language and Composition. (Which is weird, because I have no doubt that he’d be able to handle it.)

@awakeningvenus‌ omg the bio one is impossible

@swiftyfan13x‌
I love biology, but I swear, it will be the end of me. I either understand something straight away, or I look at it twenty times and then think, “Wait, what?” I’m going to be using a test practice book, a review book, and Hank Green’s Crash Course videos to try for a four. (I wish I was confident enough to believe I’ll get a 4.)

@PoisonIvy20‌ my counselor encourages us to only take 2 in one year, which is complete ■■■■■■■■. You have to really talk her into letting you take more. Me and another are the only people who are taking 5+.

@afroninja26‌
That sounds like the guidance counselors at my school. Only certain people could convince them to allow for over four Dual Enrollment classes. And because of that, one of my friends is going to be able to graduate a year early from High School with an Associates.

@PoisonIvy20 : It’s kinda self-selective at my school. There’s nothing you have to get approval for, but if you fail a quarter, you have to drop out of the class. Not many take more than 3 or 4.

hey! I had a question for my schedule for junior year! I want to major in the computer science area, and was wondering what classes i should take junior year.

Currently I have CHOSEN,

AP USH
AP PYSCH
AP HUMAN GEO
Regular Comp Sci
Hon. Pre calc
English

thanks.

@swiftyfan13x‌
Yeah because I can only get a max of 3 on ap chem and the possibility of a 1 is real.
@‌poisonivy20
My school wouldn’t even let me take 2 honors sciences in one year

@PoisonIvy20 My school has almost the same policy. Do you go to a private school? It looks like most private schools limit the amount of APs you can take, through graduation requirements

@np2734 Can you do honors or AP comp sci? That would be better than either AP Psych or AP HuGe.
