High school class of 2016

Has anybody taken or planning to take the SAT subject test for Physics? If so, what topics are covered? College board just says college-preparatory introductory level. My school doesn’t have ap physics

There really isn’t a point, but it’s ultimately your call.

@ThatOneWeirdGuy‌ Haven’t taken it yet, due to chronic procrastination re: standardized testing, but I think by “college preparatory level” they just mean a thorough grasp of basic high school stuff- Newtonian mechanics and elementary E&M, mostly. And the mathematical techniques required are quite rudimentary, no calculus or anything. I’d say pick up a copy of Barron’s and flip through it to see how much you know. College board also has some practice questions here: <a href=“The SAT – SAT Suite | College Board”>The SAT – SAT Suite | College Board;

Good luck :slight_smile:

@ThatOneWeirdGuy You don’t need AP Physics, you just need honors physics. In fact, taking AP Physics 1 would make it harder to take the SAT Subject because it doesn’t cover all the topics. You would need AP Physics 1 and 2 for all of the topics to be covered, so I think honors physics is enough with a prep book.

Our school doesn’t have Honors classes for science either, just “CP” which probably covers a lot less knowing my school. Luckily, the internet is amazing.

Thanks @abstract1‌ and @gbrl10‌ :slight_smile: I’ll get a prep book and look up what I don’t know; I just wanted to make sure it wouldn’t go way over my head.

What SAT Subject Tests have you guys taken/plan on taking?

I’ve taken SAT Math I, but I plan on taking SAT Math II, and Biology. I may take others, but I think that these would be good enough for the college I’m thinking about applying to.

@tacoperson123‌
Taken Bio-M and Math II. Going to take Chem this year and may take a few during my gap year if I decide to take the gap year.

@tacoperson123‌

I’m planning on taking US History (got a 5 on the AP exam and a 97 in the class) and one other to be determined (leaning towards Chemistry or Spanish with Listening but currently undecided) because my super-mega-ultra-reach school recommends two SAT subject tests and I’m not taking any more than I have to.

@tacoperson123‌ I’ve taken Chemistry, Math II, and World History. 700+ on Math and Chem, I tanked World History <600. I’m planning on taking Bio (Idk which one yet) and Physics this June, as I’m in the corresponding AP classes.

What numerical grade do you guys aim for in your classes?

What grade is a 4.0 at your school?

I don’t really know what to aim for anymore… I’ve heard that colleges recalculate your GPA, which freaks me out. (Also, people who have 100s in AP Chem… like, how.) At my district right now 90-100 is a 4.0. We don’t do pluses or minuses.

@LikeThis‌ In my school, a 97-100 is a 4.0.

An A is a 4.0 at my school. It doesn’t matter what number, as long as it’s an A.

@LikeThis‌ - I have 100 in AP Chem right now, but only because my teacher gave us an extra credit assignment LOL

A 4.0 is 93-100. Although, next year they are changing it to 90-100. I plan on taking Math II and Physics at the end of the school year, and taking French at the beginning of senior year. I kinda want to do biology because I didn’t do well on the AP exam, but I’m not sure.

A 4.0 is a 90-100 at my school. As for my level of trying, it depends on the class. I’m generally fine with lower A’s in classes I don’t care about like English and government and stuff, but I always make sure I have 98+ as final averages in all of my science/math courses (with the exception of bio II, which was a terrible class because the teacher refused to accept when she was wrong and was a hardcore Christian who attempted to proselytize by giving me Bibles and crap).

But yes–what are you guys’ thoughts on a gap year? I’m kind of torn atm.

You’ve mentioned this gap year many times. What do you plan to do during this gap year? Have you read about what the school’s you’re interested in think of students applying after a gap year? Is it beneficial? If not, there’s your answer.

Gap year may be good for recruitable athletes trying to improve their sport. It may not be as beneficial if done for academic reasons, as you wouldn’t be able to add much to your portfolio in 3 or 4 months into your gap year when it is time to submit college applications.

At my school, an un-weighted “A” is 4.0, which is a minimum 89.5.

I’ve mentioned the gap year like 2-3 times lmao.

I’m planning on spending the year doing research and traveling abroad. Hopefully I’ll get a publication or two out of it. The schools I’m looking at (Harvard, MIT, URoch, etc.) either don’t care about gap years or are in support of them.

@rhapsody17‌
My “gap” will actually probably be seven months or so. I’ll graduate a semester early (December 2015) and take the gap from Dec. 2015 to Fall 2016.

An “A” grade is a 4.0 uw

I just go for an A. Idrc what the percentage is.
