High school class of 2016

@glasshours Yupp, I found out before I started, so I was just constantly wondering whether what I was reading was true. Some of it is true though, I think.

Short summaries of Blink and Outliers, please? Haven’t read them haha.

@glasshours Reading through Blink right now. It looks amazing so far. Any more books to suggest?

Also, could anyone suggest a good book about computer science? Sort of like an introduction. Not a “how to” textbook or something. I really wish I had more time ugh.

The latest book I read that really affected me was Hush, by Eishes Chayil.

Well, we focus too many resources on standardized testing systems that do not accurately assess a student’s skills.

I don’t know the best book that I’ve read. I don’t read many books, to be honest. I’m a math person and I’m not very good at English classes, so I’m not really doing anything spectacular with it. Haha.

I love 1984 by George Orwell. It’s so haunting and relevant even today. Plus, it’s witty and actually entertaining!

I could rattle off a list of things about modern society that George Orwell predicted.
I’m so happy. I just got one of my essays back for AP Lang and I scored an 8! I thought I had totally missed the prompt, but I guess not.

@rumorsareflying‌ Good for you!

AP Chem and AP Psych have tests this Thursday, and there’s English quiz Friday. So currently, emotionally = 8-X

And best books I’ve recently? Well, Pride and Prejudice was good, albeit girly. I haven’t read 1984 in a while, but I liked it a lot, if I remember correctly.

Bruhh summer program apps got me stressed already.

I got a B on aforementioned anatomy test. Not very happy.

Anyone here read Wuthering Heights? I’m about halfway through and it is, to be polite, rather confusing/dull. But I have hope! Does it get better at the end?

@ThatPurpleKoala‌ Just read Pride and Prejudice in my AP Lit class and I personally thought that it was an extremely uninteresting book. I kept falling asleep every 5 pages (although that might be due to my lack of sleep)

@emilymclean1‌ We read that last year in our English class. It wasn’t the best book, but it wasn’t the worst book either. The plot just takes a really long time to develop.

Currently reading The Great Gatsby right now and so far it’s looking pretty good. Has anyone else read it?

@alzhao The Great Gatsby was required reading last year, and I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

Cool, book discussion. I’ve never read Pride and Prejudice or Wuthering Heights. Generally, I’ve eschewed works from that time period, since they tend to be a bit dry and traditional on the lexical front. I’m more into postmodern stuff myself, where authors really push the boundaries of language and narration. Which is fitting since we’re reading Portrait right now in class. I’d definitely recommend it, I’m finding it pretty enthralling and profound.

Independently, I just started Towards a Philosophy of Real Mathematics, we’ll see how it goes.

@abstract1 Towards a Philosophy of Real Mathematics sounds interesting. What’s it about? And how is the language?

@Woandering, ha, well I guess I should have specified: it’s nonfiction; the subject is pretty much reflected in the title. It’s about deriving a mathematical philosophy independent of human psychology- i.e., one that’s “real” or purely logical- and analyzing various concepts in math within this framework. The language is a bit dense, but I’m generally more forgiving when it comes to subjects that are inherently esoteric and merit somewhat didactic prose.

@abstract1 Oh, thanks. I’m still in my search of a book about logic and reason. I love math, but the philosophy of math doesn’t really interest me.

I’m really worried about ap lang and apush this year

my english teacher lost one of my assignments and gave me a zero on it… so i have a B

the apush tests are really hard and i have another on monday, so i’m really staying for it

all my other classes look like they’re gonna be A’s

i also need to take the act again (got a 33) and take subject tests

Maybe I’ll just apply to five UK colleges with good programs in Arab and Islamic Studies. Then I can spend my time studying for AP exams and SAT IIs instead of learning pointless SAT-taking strategies that are only useful for taking the SAT…
