I started thinking about summer programs a few weeks ago and I found one at UCLA i’m really interested in Now I just have to hope that I can get the scholarship (and convince my parents) so that I can actually go! UCLA is my dream school, so that would be an amazing thing to experience.

Summer program choices so far:
[ul]
[] Ohio University
[] Notre Dame
[] Vanderbilt
[] Northwestern
[] UChicago
[] Kenyon
[] George Mason
[] Purdue
[] Brown
[] Stanford
[/ul]

Decisions, decisions…

I am applying to Launch, Endevvr, LBW and M&TSI

I’m applying to TASP and perhaps Notre Dame

Are those summer programs just for experience?

@sweetcupcake12 What program At Notre Dame?

I heard that summer programs were just expensive sleepaway camps! To each their own
This summer I’ll be working at a camp, same as last year, I’m really excited!

@freezycool

Many are, but there are quite a few good ones. YYGS and LBW are both rather expensive, but they’re both really good in terms of learning and college apps. Both very selective too.

@Woandering
Ahhh! All these abbreviations. My dad has been unemployed for a while, and my mom is a lunch lady, so I try to let us keep a roof over our head lol

I started AP Euro today and I love it. Wow. The class is all essays and writing (which I love), and the assignments seem really fascinating and relevant. I’m thinking I’ll be well prepared for the exam, which is the most important part for me.

@freezycool I know what you mean there…I was dying to go to a Concordia language camp BEFORE I saw the cost. And then all of these $4000-$9000 summer programs O.o

@evan241 ew Concordia! That’s why I feel blessed to be born multilingual… currently self studying Inuktitut & learning Chinese at school. Not that I’ll be able to take a test to show my ability on either

@freezycool
Wow, good job.

@evan241

There are many more great, free (or even you get paid) programs. And Concordia isn’t great…

The free ones are really competitive though.

@Woandering Have you been to a Concordia camp? I’ve heard amazing things about them from a couple of people, but I’m sure such things depend a lot on the exact language/program.

I’ll probably do a StarTalk Arabic or Portuguese if I’m in the country this summer. I did a StarTalk Chinese camp that was okay a couple of years back - it had a great cultural aspect, though the language instruction was so-so.

@freezycool Inuktitut? That sounds pretty amazing, how did you get started with that? I’m currently self-studying intermediate-ish Portuguese (I know enough to have these weird Spanish/Portuguese/English dreams), and then I’ve started Turkish and Quechua, and am making slow but steady progress! So many languages, so little time.

@evan241

I’ve never been, but I’ve heard on CC and in real life about them. Some people do say it’s pretty fun, but a lot also say it’s not very useful for learning the language. My parents can shell out any money for summer programs if I asked, but at its price and ambiguity, Concordia just doesn’t seem worth it.

Even if it were free, you’d be foregoing the opportunity to do something that is more likely to be beneficial.

I’m sure you’ve all heard about NSLIY… apply next year!

@evan241 I was doing some random research and found resources!

@Woandering @anonemuss Are you guys taking Econ/Gov AP senior year?

@JaeHwanLoL

I took both AP Macroecon and Microecon Sophomore year. Won’t be able to fit gov.

EDIT: why?

WHAT Econ/Gov is seniors only at my school just wondering

@JaeHwanLoL

lol seriously. Both are so easy you could easily self study one of them this year. No reason for either to be seniors only.
