High School Class of 2018

@Hamlon Thank you so much for the suggestion, I really need something like that. Sadly, it will only prepare me fore the AP test but not the grades in his class.
@raffie It matters where you live. I live near Carnegie Mellon University so if I wanted to take a programming class over the summer I can go over there. It is possible that a community college may offer the class but it might not be too great. Also AP Chemistry is a very exciting course except I have an amazing teacher so that might have something to do with it. Also just brute force your counselor, I’m only taking APs next year.

I just had a brilliant idea this afternoon. Since I’m behind on World History II and HPE II compared to most sophomores, as in I haven’t taken them yet, I was thinking of getting textbooks from my local library this summer and self-study those classes over the course of two months. This would save me hundreds of dollars and I wouldn’t need a job. I would have to ask my counselor to see if this is a good idea, but it seems like one. I’ve done self-studying in the past, and it has helped somewhat. Does anyone have any tips and tricks for self-studying?

Thanks for the link @apple1893 It has alot of stuff for learning about Computer Science and Programming.

@nyuhopeful44 That looks like a really good schedule, especially if you want to get into NYU. I’m going to be picking my classes at the end of the semester, which is the beginning of next month. If you wanna to a look a mine, here it is (I’ll also display their weights, all of them are Weighted one)

Engineering Explorations I/Robotics (UW)
PLTW Principles of Engineering (Weighted - 1)
AP Chemistry (Weighted - 1)
U.S. and Virginia History (UW)
Functions/Trig (Pre-Calculus) (Weighted - 1)
Spanish II (UW)
English 11 (UW)

I have three Weighted classes. For anyone reading, would you think some colleges would like Weighted classes even if they’re not AP or IB.

Also, if anyone has any other resources for those two classes, I’d love to see them.

@ak2018 Im self-studying the AP CS test, just be dedicated, set up a schedule and be on top of things

Thanks @apple1893

@ak2018 Are weighted classes more difficult than unweighted? If there aren’t any honors options, then colleges will probably take them into account.

My schedule is still a WIP, but this is what I think it will be:

AP Lang
APUSH
Pre-Calc
Chemistry
Honors Latin III
Financial Literacy (one semester)
Classical Studies (one semester)

I recently was told by my friend that anatomy is going to be offered as a new science option next year, at standard and honors level. I wish they’d just give chemistry an honors level instead. >:U I think colleges want to see chemistry as one of your science classes, so I don’t want to substitute it with honors anatomy, but it’d sure be nice for the GPA boost and to improve my course rigor.

@LeopardFire There aren’t really any higher Honors class than those. Except Functions/Trig, there is Functions/Analytical Geometry, but that’s only if you have taken Honors Algebra II/Trig. I really wonder why you’re school thinks it’s better to have standard and Honors anatomy when they don’t even have Honors Chemistry. The Weighted classes at my school are usually harder than the unweighted classes.

@LeopardFire My schedule for next year is also a WIP.

Here is my WIP schedule for next year:

AP Language and Composition
Introduction to Astronomy
AP US History
Honors or AP Chemistry (still have to talk with people about it)
Calculus: Level 1 or AP Calc AB (AP Calc if I take Calculus: Level 1 over the summer // need to talk to people about it)
Band
Honors French 4

I think my schedule next year will include the following

Dual Enrollment Chemistry (I think they got rid of AP for this)
AP Calculus (2 semesters, idk if AB or BC)
AP US Government
AP US History
Band (probably 2 semester, block schedule)
Some lit class (Idk if AP)

@frazzledazzle I would highly recommend doing Honors Chemistry before doing AP Chemistry. This is so that say you don’t struggle as much with AP Chemistry.

@ak2018 this is why I like block. The first semester they have you take PA Chemistry then the second, AP Chemistry. It works out great. It also applies to other classes too like Calculus

@ak2018 thanks! To my knowledge, colleges either use your unweighted GPA or recalculate it using their own standards, because different schools weight differently. Your schedule seems solid though! Best of luck!

@ak2018 That’s what my teachers said about Honors Biology this year. I was in Honors Biology for a week and HATED it. I think it would be the same with Chemistry. I think that, at my school, Honors Chemistry is catered to the students who took Honors Biology. My guidance counselor said that the students who took Hon. Biology go into Hon. Chem, and AP Bio to AP Chem (or something like that).
I also don’t have the time slot available to take AP Chem senior year. I plan on taking AP Physics, so it wouldn’t be a good idea to take the two at the same time.

OK, so the best thing ever just happened. I was looking through my school’s World History II pages and one of the teachers had all of the textbook chapters already in one folder B-) . I am literally going to self study World History II. However, I need help trying to figure out a schedule I could use. I know I won’t start self-studying the textbook until the summer, but on second thought I might start self-studying it now. I mean, my current history teacher also teaches WHII and could be a great help. I could get help from you guys, that are currently taking AP World History. I have all the materials I need and I could self-study for an hour and every day I don’t have homework, excluding weekends. The schedule I was thinking of was to write notes for one hour and see how far I go in a chapter. The book has 20 chapters and if I study for the next four months, I could finish the whole book by May, while doing approximately one chapter per week.

Also, could anyone list the process of how you self-study? That’d be great. I imagine you would just go through all of the pages and maybe only read the paragraphs. I’d really need some help on this from anyone who has self studied a History class.

@ak2018 I can help you out since I’m currently taking World History II at school with the plan on taking AP World History senior year. It’s awesome that you were able to get your hands on the textbook so soon!
I don’t know the process of self-studying since I’ve never done that before.

@frazzledazzle Well if you think that taking AP Chemistry without taking Honors would work for you, that’s OK. I just feel, for me anyway, that I would I would rather take Honors Chemistry and then AP Chemistry as it shows colleges that you have a good interest in Chemistry, but that’s just my opinion. I think Honors Chemistry for me is a good challenge, as it is forcing me to study, and I feel I’ll be ready for AP Chemistry. I also plan to take regular Physics senior year.

Well thank you so much @frazzledazzle It really is great that there are some people on this thread are able to help! Well I’ve made my decision. I’m going to start self-study starting tomorrow night before I go to bed. I’m going to talk to my history teacher and counselor about it and I think I’ll be fine. I could even stay after school in the library and study there if I don’t feel like doing it at home. I am going to be doing sports starting next month, but I’ll be fine.
