Honestly I would stay with the AP @cxprus The AP Program in it of itself is much more organized.
@ak2018 my junior friends told me, my academic advisor told me and the junior told me this as well.
last old sat was administered today.
did anyone other than me take it?
@cxprus Then it sounds to me like they’re probably right. I was in the IB program in middle school and I honestly hated it. But that was probably because my middle school kinda sucked. I was supposed to go to an IB school, but decided to go to an AP school instead. Honestly, not to scare you or anything, IB is a tremendous amount of work. Don’t believe me check out @IBProblems on Twitter. People there know how hard it is, compared to the AP program. The amount of projects and essays you’ll be doing will take up alot of your time. Honestly, it’s a good thing I went to the AP school. Not only that, but at least in the U.S., IB classes don’t really hold that much weight or recognition. I think it’s due to the whole HL and SL classes, where it divided the, for example Chemistry, curriculum in half and spreads it over two years, but I maybe wrong. I honestly wouldn’t do it as you could just take the AP classes and not have as many projects. I mean all you really get is a certificate afterwards, right? I would highly recommend searching “is IB really worth it” on Google and see what comes up. That might help! Hope this helps!
@thetex I’m not taking it, but ours has been rescheduled due to the storm.
BTW, THE STORM IS FINALLY OVER! TOMORROW IS CLEAN-UP DAY!
@nyuhopeful44 another very optimistic list. And you’re right at @frazzledazzle i don’t know your grades but your list of schools you think are matches and reaches for you fits the profile of a 3.8 or 3.9 student with a 2150 on the SAT. If those are your stats then by all means your list is accurate.
My list
High Reach: NYU Stern,UNC Chapel Hill, U of Virginia
Reach:UCLA
Match:UCSB,UCI,UCD
Safety:UCSC,UCR
@frazzledazzle I mixed boston college and boston university up boston university may be a match for you. @nyuhopeful44 are you instate for UCLA. If so what were your first sem grades and PSAT. First semester i got 2 B with three UC weighted honors that brings my UC uncapped GPA to a 4.2 below UCLA’s average. However i got a 1450 on the PSAT if I work hard i can achieve at least a 1480 on the actual SAT which is right at UCLA’s 75th percentile i believe.
as of now UCLA is still a reach for me
Also, from an earlier topic I had stated, I had a great idea. So, I went on this website called https://www.edx.org/high-school-initiative (yes, I know I’m not supposed to put up links) and was amazed at what they offered. They have FREE, online AP classes taught by professors from MIT, UC Berkeley, Boston University, Texas University and even Harvard. So, I look through the courses, and they included Pre-Calculus, AP Physics 1, 2, and C, AP Environmental Science, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus AB, AP Computer Science A and Computer Science Principles, AP English Language, AP Statistics, and AP Spanish Literature and Culture. There are even introductory classes like Programming, Philosophy and Critical Thinking, Introduction to Programming with Java, Beginners Spanish, American Government, Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Engineering and Engineering Mathematics, The Engineering of Structures Around Us, Programming in Scratch, Introduction to Algebra, and Introduction to Geometry. They even have prep classes for people planning on going into AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP French Language and Literature, AP Biology. So then I got thinking, why don’t I take one of these course during the summer, if I have nothing else to do? So that’s why I decided to share this with you.
thanks @ak2018 hopefully it’s approved by the UC system
I was thinking that maybe, for anyone that was interested, would like to take some courses on here now, or over the summer. I believe I talked to @HelloThereHola about this before. This isn’t new by the way. MIT and Harvard have been doing this for years. Anyways, back to my idea, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in taking a course either now or eventually in the summer. This is for anyone wanting to self-study a class and you also have the ability to contact an instructor from a top school. You’ll be given tests and practice and there is also a forum that allows you to talk to other students enrolled in the course. You can take the course at your own pace and at any time. You can even buy a certificate that shows your school that you did the course, however, at my school, you would have to take the AP test to earn credit.
So anyway, just wanted to get that out there for anyone that wanted a place to learn for FREE. My idea was mainly getting people on this thread who had nothing planned this summer and maybe creating a sub-thread of people wanting to do it some courses on here. I know I definitely am. So, I would urge all of you to look at the website on the last page or here https://www.edx.org/high-school-initiative and, if you don’t have any plans this summer or want to take one right now, pick one or two classes that you might want to take. You can even check how long certain classes would take, most take 2 - 4 hours a week for a total of 6 weeks to complete, so at most 24 hours, per part, there are usually 5 - 6 parts so you could be finished with a class in a month.
So, if you’re to give this program a try, go to the website and see what classes you might want to take. Then comment the class(es) you plan to take and when. People can start now and be finished by the time AP exams come along. So like this comment, if you’re willing to give it a try. I want to see how many people liked my idea.
@BucketsUCSC It’s approved by pretty much every system. It’s basically the equivalent of self-studying and taking a virtual class. You’ll have a final and, if you score an 80% or higher, you’ll get a certificate, which you’ll have to pay for, that states that you toke the course. I decided I’m not going to get the certificate, and use it as a self-study/virtual class this summer then, May of 2017, take the AP test to get the credit. I would study and review once a month to make sure I’m ready to take the exam and don’t forget anything. The courses themselves also give a lot of test prep, so you know you’ll be ready.
@BucketsUCSC if we don’t count freshman year, my unweighted GPA will be a 3.9. My school doesn’t weight but out of my two AP classes this year I have an A- and a B+ (As in everything else) . I haven’t taken the SAT but I took the ACT and got a 30. UCLA’s average ACT was like a 28 or something which is why I said it was a match. I’m not instate-- I live in Michigan
@ak2018 thanks for this! I can’t use it though because the APs I’m self studying are Psych and European History, and they don’t offer either of those. (Psych was all in Chinese). Great idea though!
@nyuhopeful44 Oh well that’s okay. I believe they closed that Introduction to Psychology class, the one in English. Most of them are just archived after they’re done. I will check which ones are closed. Would you ever plan on taking a class in the future on their, perhaps this summer? They have a lot of material. Would you have used it had the Psychology class been open?
@ak2018 I might take chemistry over the summer
@nyuhopeful44 Oh cool! I was planning on taking Environmental Science or Biology! It’s really a great site to study from! I know they have an AP Chemistry class on there taught by a great university and some high school teachers. Here’s a description of the class is called Preparing for the AP* Chemistry Exam - Part 1(There are two parts): This course covers topics in a traditional AP Chemistry sequence. It includes modern atomic theory, periodic table and trends, stoichiometry, bonding, molecular structure, kinetics, thermodynamics, equilibrium, acids and bases, gases, liquids and solids, electrochemistry and solubility. The material which includes video lectures, practice questions and review exams may be used for self-study by students and teachers. This is a self-paced, asynchronous course. The course material will be released on a weekly basis. It is meant to be a great resource without heavy staff support or involvement. This means that students can proceed through the material at a pace that suits their personal schedule. While students are welcome to interact with fellow students on the discussion boards, there are no opportunities to interact with the course staff directly.
It takes 8 - 12 hours per week for a total of eight weeks to complete.
