High School Class of 2018

@ak2018 I don’t have an issue with hunger, since I usually don’t eat during school anyway, but I’m worried not having a period to relax (AKA do homework for the coming classes) will hurt me. I think I can persevere though.

You can retake your final?! That’s amazing. Unfortunately that’s not an option for me. However we usually get rather large curves (for example, my midterm grade pre-curve was a 73, but with the curve was an 81), so not having one could really hurt everybody.

What is HPE I? The only acronym I can think of is health/physical education. ^^’ Good luck on the other parts, hopefully they will balance out the C.

@LeopardFire Technically, we take retake SOLs. The school gives out expedited retake SOLs to anyone who failed and had a score between 375 and 399. If you fail the retake, you have to take the class given final, made by the teacher, which is usually harder than the SOL.

HPE 1 is Health and PE for Freshman, but I’m taking it as a sophomore, don’t ask (it’s complicated). I only had a C on one of the three parts of the final. I just calculated it and I’m pretty sure I got a 92%. I’m taking HPE II this summer.

@Cookiesandcreme The buzzfeed article that featured her speech really got to me. [he who must not be named] not only hurt the victim, but everyone close to her. The victim’s sister will feel guilty for the rest of their life after leaving her alone, the victim’s parents will feel like they failed to protect their daughter, the victim’s boyfriend will wonder about the outcome of this night if he was there. The assault will follow her for the rest of her life and has changed her view of relationships and trust. She wrote in that article that if it hadn’t been her that night he would have found someone else. That if [he who must not be named] wasn’t caught that night, he would’ve continued to do this to many more girls(if he hadn’t already). Her essay must not be forgotten. It is so powerful that I cried after reading it. Our justice system is so f—ed up. In the next state over, an AA man might be sentenced to life in prison for stealing candy and this monster walks. In the next state over, a mentally disabled AA man might be executed and this man walks. In the next state over, a man who’s DNA has proved his innocence, still continues to rot in jail and this man walks. In the next state over, a woman mourning the loss of her child b/c of her boyfriend’s abuse was actually sentenced and this man walks. You’d think we were living in a 3rd world country lacking basic human rights, but no we just continue to parade ourselves as the “land of the free.” I haven’t been this disgusted with a judge since a rape case was “thrown out” because the 14 year-old girl looked mature for her age. Teacher was given 30 days and the girl later killed herself.

@Hamlon PREACH! ^:)^

Also, as of yesterday, Hilary Clinton has secured her place as the Democratic Nominee. Bernie Sanders is no longer running. So, I guess it’s just Trump and Hilary now. I’m honestly open to an independent party nominee. Like, I’d honestly love a Neil DeGrasse Tyson/Bill Nye precedential campaign.

@JadedJunior I took AP gov as a freshmen and it wasn’t bad. I read the review book took maybe one or two practice exams and got a 4 on the exam. I would recommend the class if you are interested in learning more about the government and how it functions.
@ak2018 I am honestly so scared for this election because if we don’t get trump we get Hilary who doesn’t seem much better.

@hamlon I also read the article. I cried and I felt physically sick. I cried when I read her letter and I cried in anger when I read the father of the rapist’s letter. This case highlights so much of the things wrong with America and our society. The lack of respect and care for a woman’s life and body. The blatant white privilege that is prevalent in all aspects of life. And the difference in how each social class is treated. Basically money equals power. Being white equals power. Being a male equals power.

I also feel disgusted by the rapist who does not understand what he did wrong. The rapist thinks it’s okay to blame alcohol for the rape. The rapist and his family does not understand that they ruined a woman’s life. That is another reason among a lot that I feel so disgusted

I also read that a black athlete at Vanderbilt who did the same disgusting action and raped an unconscious woman is getting 15-20 years behind bars.

@Cookiesandcreme @Hamlon Ugh. It’s so ridiculous and infuriating that this could happen. He should have gotten the maximum sentence, and his dad was angry that he got anything? Absurd. I hate that he got off easy on the Stanford front due to swimming. I hope USASwimming kicks him out on his ass like he deserves.

@ak2018 TYSON/NYE 2K16

I have a different view on it then you guys I think the racial and socioeconomic preferences the justice system has is complete BS, if this was a black male he would have definitely gotten the full sentence and been seen as a monster which is not fair. However, the way we look at rapes and ruin the lives of thousands of innocent men every year is atrocious. Yes many women are scarred by rape but an alarming number of women use it as a blanket to cover up embarrasment for their actions

@ak2018 the anecdote about sat classes

I have not seen a single person say it WASN’T about class/race… However, I feel the blame for the sentence needs to rest more on the individual judge and not all white people. Is this not a harmful generalization? Am I supposed to hate myself for being born with something I have no control over? I don’t believe I requested white privilege or denied privilege from anyone else. Bottom line, we need to judge each other’s actions more and skin less. Everyone. Because at this point I feel that extremists on both sides of the aisle are guilty of it. If you go about life angry because the green color people oppress you or you see them as inferior to you, life will just be more bitter and difficult. Evil has no racial boundaries. But neither does goodness and more people need to cut this BS complex of opressor/opressee and grow the Hell up and move on.

@LeopardFire yeah, I usually don’t eat much at school either but I couldn’t imagine just sitting in class all day… I do have focus problems though, and it might not be that bad if you have a fun, non academic class in the middle of the day. Our school only has 6 periods so most kids in band/orchestra/choir have to do summer classes to graduate. We can’t use our lunch period because the school is small and everyone has the same lunch.

@BucketsUCSC I don’t really understand what you mean in your last couple sentences. Yes there are men that are falsely convicted of rape and that is a problem. But that has nothing to do with this case because the witnesses saw the rape happen. It was clear that this was rape and he didn’t get the charge that he deserves.

@reidd799 The thing is this case is not only about rape. Because a similar case happened I think earlier this year or last year and all the factors were the same except one was white and one was black. The black rapist got the maximum sentence the white rapist gets 6 months. So it’s hard for someone to ignore rape. You are right that evil has no racial boundaries but apparently the justice system thinks so. Also if you are white and you are a male you are privileged because the United States of America was created for white males, specifically white rich males. Yes you didn’t ask for the privilege but you should acknowledge your privilege. Lastly, there isn’t a BS complex of oppressor/opressee. I get that some people take it too far and use it as an excuse when you can rise above it. However, let’s face the facts that if you are black or a minority your life is automatically harder because racism is real and prevalent. You can’t deny that racism is not an issue anymore because it is.

*I meant that it is hard for someone to ignore race in this case.

I think it is highly debatable whether it was rape, because we don’t know what they were doing before she was drunk what if she consented before hand and he continued penetrating her because he was too drunk to realize she had passed out because he also had drunk well over the legal driving limit. I think we need to address our rape laws just as much as we need to adjust the legal system’s bias towards white people and there clearly is one.

@BucketsUCSC Dude are you kidding me?? How is this debatable?? She has a boyfriend so why would she want to have sex with a stranger? Two, if she was so intoxicated and couldn’t give legible consent then he definitely shouldn’t have touched her. Three, she mentions in her letter that if her boyfriend mentioned doing any of those sexual acts behind a dumpster she would smack him. Why then would she do that with a stranger? Four, if it was consensual why did he run? He tried to escape and one of the people who rescued her had to tackle him down to the ground. People don’t run when there innocent. Five, why were there bruises in and outside of her body that were tell tale signs of rape? Face it this was rape. You can’t use alcohol intoxication as an excuse because so many people drink way over the legal driving limit and they don’t go and rape people.

@BucketsUCSC Anyone drunk to the level she was could NOT have legally consented. Read the letter. Please.
@reidd799 No one in the thread has said that white people need to hate themselves. The tactic of completely ignoring race has never worked because certain groups have been historically denied the benefits of others. Different races unfortunately have different issues. We were trying to have a conversation over the great injustice of bias in the judicial system. A rapist only got 6 months in jail presumably because of his connections and ability to afford lawyers that most people wouldn’t have. Just because you’ve personally never experienced something does not mean it does not exist. The oppressor/oppressed BS as you called it, is not something people just make up to start fights. That grossly overgeneralizes our society as a simplistic cycle of pettiness. MANY people have good reason to claim systematic oppression. No one specifically called out all white people as a problem. No, you did not take privilege from someone else, but don’t you recognize that you’ve been blessed to have more than others simply for being born white and male? Why not use that to help write the next chapter instead of ignoring the greater issue and leaving it to stagnate? There have been many times where my friends with experiences different than my own failed to realize how the subtext of their words hurt me. Has the word ghetto ever made you wince? Have you ever been told that you need to dress differently and learn to cook or else no man would want to marry you? I can answer yes to both. How do you see a conversation about rape and immediately think someone is targeting/judging you specifically? No one is in control of what they were born into, but arguing about blame when no one blamed you adds nothing to the convo. We did blame the judge, but we also recognized the pattern at play. No, it’s not all whites. No, it’s not all men. No, it’s not all of the wealthy. But doesn’t the fact that the problem exists at all not bother you? It’s like you telling someone, “There’s no reason for you to call for help and I didn’t do this. Stop being a baby about it.” and walking away after they ask you for help because their house is burning. No, you didn’t start the fire, but just because your house isn’t burning does not mean no one else’s is.

(I’m of the personal opinion that nobody can consent while heavily intoxicated.)

@BucketsUCSC I do understand your point about how SOME women who “cry wolf” about rape for nefarious reasons, and that certainly is a problem, but, at least to the media, not the main problem here. Yes, there are women who say they were raped when it wasn’t really true, but the main problem is that, for the most part, many women are raped. I highly doubt that most women would lie about something as bad as rape, considering the fact that rape itself is a very huge, and illegal, offense and accusing someone of being a rapist is a very big accusation, an accusation that needs proof (witness accounts, where it all happened), or something that shows that they truly were raped. Because of this, however, in most cases, judges have a bias towards the women because of the fact that accusing someone of rape is an accusation not to be taken lightly. They are usually the victims of rape, not men. In the state of Virginia, if you so much as touch a women in an inappropriate way, you should expect a couple months to years of jail time.

@reidd799 I fully understand why feel you’re hated in society simply for being white. There are people at my school who question why they have white privilege and would honestly give it up in a heartbeat if they could. They hate having this privilege they feel they, themselves, have done nothing to achieve it. They were given it from birth. Once, when I was looking through articles on Facebook, I saw this one article about how this one woman beat up this one guy in an elevator because he had touched her butt. I was looking over the comments and they repeated the same thing over and over again, “All men should really think about how badly they treat women.”. When looking through these comments, it made me feel a little bad and asked “Why I am grouped in with the men that don’t treat women with respect?” Then I realized this statement is a generalization as it starts off its sentence with the “All”. I also realized that this doesn’t really apply to me as I always try to respect everyone, not caring what gender they are.
