High School Class of 2018

I decided it would be pretty fun to come up with funny little titles for my classes for next year.

Engineering Explorations I/Robotics: Robotics Club Class
PLTW Principles of Engineering: Engineering with Physics and Trigonometry (A True Engineering Class)
AP Chemistry: 2nd-Year Continuation of Chemistry-Based Purgatorial Hell
U.S. and Virginia History: History Learned From Conservative Teachers Who Will Likely Try To Glorify American History Every Chance They Get
Functions/Trigonometry: Non-Calculator Skills
Spanish II: Fortunately My Last Foreign Language Class Ever!
AP English Language: Essays, Essays, and More Essays!

@ak2018
Pre-Calc: Fun
American Lit: Hell
Chemistry: Cool
Global Studies: Damn, I have to discuss?
Publishing: ugh
Financial Alg: EZ A
my history electives: I hate you

The best I could do lolol

I’m about to leave for TASS in 9 days and I feel so anxious. The longest I’ve ever been away from family involved a 3- night school trip, but my sister was always there. I don’t know how I can go six weeks without talking to all of them. My parents are proud of me, but they’ve been wary about all of this. Has anyone been away from family for an extended period of time?

@wildguy57 My English teacher next year is amazing. Writing is already just one of those things I love to do! We’re doing this joint year-long project with between English, Chemistry, and USH which she organized! I get/have to read “A Chosen Exile: A History of Racial Passing in American Life” and have the choice between “Incidents in the Life of A Slave Girl” (I picked this) or “The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man.” I swear I’ve been looking forward to her class for a long time. She has an entire unit where we try to figure out how our beliefs fit in with what we’ve been told by society.

@ak2018
AP Calc BC- I’ve reached my limit
AP Chem- Death’s Catalyst
APUSH- Blame Columbus
Choir- More drama than theater
Orchestra- Blame the Violas
STEM mentor./Engineer.- Why is this not working?!!
AP English Lang- See you at 11:59:59
DC French 1/2- Excuse my French

is the max score on the psat 1520 or 1600?

@wildguy57 Yeah, I think I was pretty close this year. I predict I need to score 20-30 points higher overall to be a guaranteed finalist. I just need to focus on certain parts of reading because historical language bores the crap out of me. Math is fine, but being out of Algebra 2 for so long means I’ve forgotten some topics. The test is out of 1520.

oh k

So to get the national merit, you have to be in 99 percentile score wise correct?
Is there a set score you need to reach to get the national merit, because I thought it was different state by state… but I might be wrong.

@wildguy57 Each state is different, but you can approximate using last year’s cutoff. There’s a website that has a conversion chart and lets you see what score you should be aiming for. The big disclaimer is that it’s just a guess. Some states have cutoffs higher than the 99th percentile due to the sheer volume of eligible kids and the limited number of spots available.

@wildguy57 I read Huck Finn this year! For AP Lang I’m reading On Writing by Stephen King. I wish it was a novel, but I guess that will be more of AP Lit’s thing.

Our school’s summer reading book list came out recently, and we have a choice to read one of these six books:

$2 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America
Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City
A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity
Blood and Earth: Modern Slavery, Ecocide, and the Secret to Saving the World
Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man who Would Cure the World
Hidden Girl: The True Story of a Modern-Day Child Slave

The theme is “a community of readers, a community of service”, which is why all of these books are about poverty.

Any suggestions for which book to read?

My report card came in today! My cumulative GPA is now a 3.702. I really wanted a 3.7, hopefully I can raise it even higher next year. :slight_smile:

Can someone tell me if my improvement is getting somewhere?

So here is the situation/story.
9th grade UW GPA: 3.17
!0th grade UW GPA: 3.61
Cumulative UW GPA: 3.4

Basically, my GPA went up about 3 points. I initially had two reactions. First reaction, “YAY, my GPA went up!” And then two seconds later, “Eh… Not competitive, get back to work!” So, Basically, I know that my dream schools are still a super reach, but do you think that my improvement is showing or not showing enough?

Thanks.

@LeopardFire Congrats on your GPA!

@ak2018
AP Calc AB/BC: probably will be my favorite class
AP Physics 1: horribly taught at my school
AP Lang: I can either get the devil or an angel for a teacher ew
H World: the biggest joke ever, kinda sad I can’t take AP but it’d be too much work
H Contemporary Voices: my favorite English teacher ever!!!
H Java: finally get to learn coding
In class Algebra 2 tutor: my favorite teacher in the school and I get her for the 5/6th straight semesters
AP Study Hall: more like AP catch up on my sleep???

For my AP Lang summer assignment, we have to read a memoir, biography or an autobiography. I absolutely love football and sports stories in general. I have an addiction to sports, so I’m am going to read “Ernie Davis: The Elmira Express”. I’m happy that I got to choose the person I’m reading about! Also, my essay for it will be easier to read because eiceill actually be engaged in the book. :smiley:

@apple1893 any improvement is an improvement!! It’s great that you were able to raise it to raise it 3 whole points! Also, don’t worry too much that “it’s not good enough”, just keep working hard, and give 100%. You can’t ask yourself to do more than that. Congrats again!

At my school, there is an award for getting all A’s in the semester and on the exam. I missed it for the fourth time by one A again. This has happened to me every semester of school. :(( I got a B on my French final. I’m so close. Hopefully, I can get it at least once next year or senior year. However I can’t be too mad, I finished with all A’s got the semester. My UW GPA is a 4.0 still, and my W GPA is a 4.41.

How long are you guys spending each day studying for sat or PSAT? The most I have have been able to do is 3 hours a day but I keep feel like I should push myself more lol…

@wildguy57 I can only do an hour/40 questions a day. How do you keep yourself focused for 3 hours?!

Determination I guess lol

I finished the year with a cummulative GPA of 4.0 UW and 4.338 weighted.
