High School Class of 2018

@fuzzypolarbears I think the legos helped with the kids lol.

@ak2018 Invest some money and buy a Ti-84 CE or Ti-84 plus C silver edition. If you go into engineering you will need a good calculator anyways.

Amazon has the Princeton Review AP Chem 2017 for like 13 bucks check it out.

@Dancingwithstars i tried College raptor and it gave Stanford as my best match so I’m not sure how trustworthy it is for high ranked students/colleges with extremely low acceptance rates loll

@snowfairy137 It gives you the percent chance you have for each school and if its a high reach, reach etc. What did it say for stanford.
My best match was northwestern but I only had like a 20% chance of getting in and it said it was a high reach

@Kassh4 I was using the mobile version of the webpage so I might not have gotten all the infomation lol. I’ll take a look on a computer later.

@ak2018 i’m one of those med school nerds lmao i’ve never really been into creating things but engineering sounds like such a cool field

Also, tip for SAT/ACT that seems to work for me (got a 35 on ACT for my first try w/ minimal prep): work quickly and efficiently. I’ve found that I shouldn’t try to get everything right the first time through. If it’s not clicking in your brain, keep going until you reach the last question. I always end up finishing each section with around 10 mins extra, and then I go back to the ones that I skipped/ put a star on bc I was unsure. I got a 35 on the science section, but my main strategy for that one was panic, work quickly, and cry my way through lol

@oPhilippos a 35 is really impressive!! I need to practice the conflicting viewpoints passage; I hate that section. It causes my science section score to change so much.

@thetex I agree with @LeopardFire . It might be best to do the New SAT or ACT sometime next year. Many schools, including Virginia Tech, will not be accepting old SAT scores starting with our graduating class. Meaning starting with the class of 2018, all standardized test scores must be from the New SAT or the ACT. It will be affecting our graduating class first, so it kind of sucks for those, such as yourself, who already took the test. The class of 2017 will be the last graduating class most colleges will be accepting the Old SAT from.

The SAT and ACT give me too much stress! I have signed up for tutoring because I will need all the help I can get!

@oPhilippos It really is! There is a type of engineering for almost every part of STEM. If you’re interested in engineering as well as the medical, there’s always biomedical engineering. You can engineer new technologies that will potentially save many lives. I believe I read this article a while ago about a device that has a tiny camera inside that could see if something’s wrong inside your body. It was pretty cool. I believe that kind of technology is just getting underway.

@apple1893 I wish I had the money to take an ACT prep class. What about Khan Academy, has that been working out?

@ak2018 Don’t get me wrong. The Online prep is great and all but i feel like I need someone watching over me. I am truly blessed that I get this opportunity or prep classes.

@apple1893 I totally understand. If I could take an ACT prep class, I would. I feel like I’m kind of alone in this whole prep thing and I’ve definitely been having my doubts. Sometimes, I really just ask myself what the point of all of this is.

Also, I do much better in a classroom setting with a teacher than with studying a book in my room. I just feel more pressured to succeed that way. Like right now in my Health and PE 2 class. I tried studying over the Virginia driver’s manual during Spring Break so I could take the permit test, but I decided not to as I felt I was rushing myself to learn what I thought was so much information at one time. Considering the fact that I will need to actually use this information in real life, almost everyday, I wanted to take it seriously and go through it thoroughly. I already feel I’m going to be a pretty bad driver anyway.

@snowfairy137 leggos were my childhood haha

@ak2018 I like working in classroom settings as well, but I’m not taking prep classes either. What’s helping me as I’m starting to study for the SAT is writing down my goals and reasons why I’m studying, and having them next to me so I can be motivated to work harder.

@fuzzypolarbears samee

@kassh4 I would, but I actually have talked to the AP Chemistry teachers a while ago about it a they said a simple $50 Casio Graphing Calculator would suffice. I also asked my math teacher and she said that since I was going to Functions/Trigonometry (Pre-Calculus), won’t really need a graphing calculator as the class mainly does math by hand. I even talked to the engineering teacher it and he said “a good engineer should only use their calculator when either checking their work or on a time-crunch”. He also uses a Casio and says to just the most affordable one you can find and that there are a lot of calculators with many unnecessary features and gimmicks, such as colored-screen calculators. He bought that Casio Graphing Calculator five years ago and has been using it ever since. So yeah, what I’ll probably do is buy the $50 one from Staples and see how good and how long it lasts me. If I feel I need a more advanced one for college, I’ll probably end up selling it on Amazon and buy a new one.

Ivies and similar schools are never a match, not even for the most amazing students in the whole wide world. They are always high reaches because the outrageous competitiveness for spots there.

I know, thats why I was skeptical of the website

I think when it says best match its talking about how well you “fit” into the school based on how much you want to pay and other preferences. There is also an indicator of your chances and they seem to align. I really like the request more information feature. The colleges haven’t sent me anything but I only requested it yesterday, but if it does work it is a great feature. Overall, It is a pretty neat website and I like the layout/format.

I literally just did some ACT math prep and I’m ecstatic. Everything, even the geometry questions, were easy! I’m so glad I made the switch.
