High School Class of 2018

Guys I need help!! This math problem is giving me a really hard time (I hate math). It says;

Find x in terms of all other variables
y=(x-a)/x+b)

Thanks for the help!!

Well, friend, you’re missing a round bracket! @Tobster18
Either way- I’m gonna assume this is an SAT practice problem. If not, you can’t get homework help on CC!

@OMPursuit Yeah you’re right I didn’t see that its actually y=(x-a)/(x+b). Yeah it is an SAT problem.

In which case:

y(x+b)=(x-a). (multiply both sides by (x+b))
yx + yb = x - a. (distributive property here)
by+a=x-xy. (subtract xy and add a to both sides, so all terms with x are on the one side)
x(1-y)=by+a. (factor out x using the distributive property again)
x = (by+a)/(1-y) while y doesn’t equal 1!

Watchya wanna do is use the distributive property of algebra to isolate x.

There are probably Khan Academy vids on it!

@Tobster18 I just tried to do that problem and I got X = byx/-a, so at least you know I’m wrong :)) (Definitely going to have to review over variable manipulation/isolation)

I’m currently watching Kahn Academy videos on the Special Right Triangles and they are really good. I can’t wait to use Khan Actually for AP Chemistry.

@ak2018 Lol I, along with everyone else, almost fell asleep in AP Chem today. He shuts the lights off and we have it first hour and the teacher is really monotone. Perfect formula for a nap

YAAAAAS SAT PREP!!!

Also idk how to help very much @Tobster18 and I’m probably just stating the obvious but it LOOKS like you have to get x on its own and idk if the / in that is supposed to be a ( but if its y=(x-a)(x+b) then it might be solved like a quadratic (at least I think that’s what it’s called) where you double distribute to get rid of the ()s

ex. y=(x+2)(x+2)
y=x^2+2x+4

except you bring all the other variables over to the y side of the =?

Idk if it’s right or not, because I only have algebra 1 and geometry under my belt (talking alg2 this year), but that seems to me haha hope I was a help :>

Completely ignore my post lol I screwed it all up hahaha

tfw you can barely comprehend @OMPursuit’s explanation… RIP me :’)

I went on a tour of Roger Williams today! My parents, sister, and I had planned to just walk around, but we ended up coming shortly before a tour was starting, and we were allowed to join in. Apparently they are in the top ten college campuses for having the best food, and being surrounded by water, they have free paddle board and kayak rentals, as well as free sailing lessons. I thought that was neat. The average GPA for their honors program is a 3.5, so I think I could get in.

you’re fine, @Marg532 !
For the future, ‘/’ is just a way of saying ‘divided by’ :smiley:

Its crazy to see how much history plays a role in naming colleges. In the first few chapters of APUSH i learned about roger williams and why all the colleges were originally built.

Funny story, I was going to take a math class this semester at a different college cause the one I’m doing the “running start” program at didn’t let me take Multivariable Calc without starting over with their math classes even though I already took BC. I then couldn’t because I had a physics lab on monday’s at the same time as all the calc classes. However, my dad said “sign up for the class anyway, you’ll only miss like 11 classes and you’ll be with engineering students instead of math majors, you’ll be fine.” So, now I’m signed up for a Multivariable Calc class that starts in like 5 days and that I know for sure I’ll miss 11 days of. Heh. What have I done?!. At least Hermione had a time turner! (I looked up the professsor on rate my professors and he doesn’t care about attendance so that’s good at least.)

My schedule this fall (all college classes) now looks like:

General Chem (plus lab)
General Physics (calc based) (plus lab)
English 201 (I tested out of english 101 which noone else I’ve talked to has)
Multivairable Calc

whoops haha.

@OMPursuit I know that / means divided by I just thought that he accidentally typed / instead of ( b/c my geometry teacher last year bombarded us with the perfect square and completing the square problems so I automatically thought the format he was going for was (x+whatever)(x-whatever) haha

Also I went to the orientation for the main college for high school students program I’m doing (its called running start) and it was the most boring thing ever omg. At least I got to walk around on my own after and find where my classes are!

Apparently my dad talked to the math chair at that college (who he went to college with and took a lot of classes with cause they both got math majors) and he’s going to email her the name of my professor so she can email him to make sure hes ok with me missing those classes. Maybe I should email him myself as well. She also suggested a bunch of other math classes for me to take lol.

I hate AP Stats! If there was a way for me to get out of it, I would. It’s so boring. I took a stats class at a summer program 2 years ago, so I already know at least half of the class material. The textbook is so small that you could cover the course in 2-3 months! It’s essentially just a whole bunch of busy work to stretch the class out 9 months. Turns out the scheduling issues with Calc happened to a lot of people. I’m going to apply to STEM summer programs and my schedule isn’t doing me any favors w/ stats as my only math class. They got rid of some math teachers, so now almost all the math classes have around 30 people! I can’t deal with this. I’m going to forget all of pre-calc at this rate because I’m basically taking a year off of math. If they try to to tell me I won’t be in Calculus next year… they’re finna catch these hands.

I’m dead! :)) :))

“They’re gonna have to catch these hands” is literally my go-to phrase! :))

@Hamlon I’m done! LMAO, that made me smile.

@Hamlon that sucks! I had a scheduling issue with my final French class, so I have to wait until next year to take it. What I’m doing so that I don’t forget the language is reviewing my notes from previous years and using Duolingo. I feel that review when you have the time is essential for retention over the course of a year haha
