High School Class of 2018

@kassh4
APUSH: just finished chapter 4. Taking unit exam on Wednesday/Thursday on key periods 1 and 2

AP Chem: just finished chapter 5 (thermodynamics) and took the test today.

@sewin2music What textbook are you guys using? We are using the American Pageant 14th edition.

@kassh4 we are using America’s History 8th edition by Henretta and Chemistry the Central Science 13th edition by…a lot of people… :slight_smile:

@kassh4

AP Chem: Up until now, we’ve been reviewing first year Chemistry, however, that’ll change next week. After our Balancing Equations and Nomenclature Quiz next Tuesday, we’ll be done reviewing and start Chapter 2 - Atoms, Molecules, and Ions. Our class’s speed will definitely pick next week, especially since we’re going to cover 7 CHAPTERS this quarter alone! The quarter ends in mid-November.

AP Bio: we’ve done 22-26 and tested those, and we’ve done notes on 4 and 5.

@ak2018 My teacher said that we will mainly be doing stuff from Chem 1 but a little harder all of first semester because he is going from Big Idea 1-6 and the first few Big Ideas are general stuff. Second semester we thermodynamics, equilibrium, and electrochem. I think.

btw for bio we are using Campbells 8th edition and from Chem we are using Raymond Chang’s AP Chem 8th edition

I’m super excited! My SAT prep book (the Official College Board edition) finally came in the mail! Now I have no excuse not to study, because I have the book right there in my room!

@Marg532 Not to be a Debby Downer, but don’t you start school on Tuesday? You’re probably going to have to figure a way around that.

@kassh4 Yeah, I’m pretty sure my AP Chem teacher mentioned that as well. What we’ll be covering isn’t that hard and is definitely a lot easier with first-year Chem knowledge. From what I’ve read from the syllabus, we must bring our textbooks every class as we’ll be flipping through the pages to do practice problems.

@ak2018 I’m studying mostly when I have downtime haha also in these beginning few weeks most of my classes won’t be giving out super intense homework (other than APUSH), so I have a few study halls where I can study either from my book (probably not because it’s super big) or certain subjects on Khan Academy test prep.

@Marg532 Well it’s definitely that you started studying.

Now that the first week is over, I can go back to my study plan. Starting Wednesday, I will be going to the library immediately after school from 3 - 7pm. I actually just applied for a year-round volunteer position at my library. If I’m accepted, I’ll be checking out books every Saturday afternoon.

What ECs will guys be doing this year? I just asked my math teacher when Math Honor Society starts and he said it starts in two weeks. The clubs are definitely starting early this year. Half of them are starting as early as next week!

So anyway, I decided to make a new list of ECs I’ll be participating in this year.

Biotech Club
Chemistry Club
Book Club (Maybe)
Environmental Science Club
Forensics Club
FRC (In January)
Math Honor Society
Rocketry (TARC) Club

I’ll also start Indoor Track in November!

@kassh4 I’m 3 days into APUSH. The book we’re using is America: A Concise History, sixth edition. We did chapters 1 and 2 over the summer, and 3 reading and notes is due Friday. There is a state and capital quiz on Tuesday, which is supposed to be an easy starting grade.

3 out of my 4 AP teachers aren’t very good which sucks. My APUSH teacher is kind of a mess so I’m going to get a review book early and read from that for each unit. My AP calc AB guy I’ve heard is bad but he’s not the worst math teacher I’ve had and APULL (Both AP english ones together) is all about how the AP is the icing on the cake and not the main class focus which is how I am use to it being taught. My AP psych teacher though it amazing she was actually a psychologist for awhile before deciding to become a teacher.
I only have 1 grade right now and it 100% in Psych for doing an in class assignment which is really nice.

@singingwriting For APUSH, I would recommend searching Adam Norris on YouTube or apushreview.com on Google. He offered review videos for certain textbooks(chapter by chapter) videos on each key periods, and videos for each key concept, all of which also have outlined that you can fill in while watching the videos. He’s really helped so far! My teacher gives us a bunch of irrelevant info that never shows up on his tests so… Also, of course, crash course AP US history videos are really helpful!

@ak2018 This year, I’m in:
Madrigals-1st year (we do outside of school performances and sectionals/practice
Hospice-2nd year (volunteering at a local hospice once every other week)
The Thirst Project 1st year ( I’m so excited to be a part of this!!!)

I initially wanted to join some academic clubs this year, but I decided that I didn’t really have time for too many clubs and if I was going to join anything new, I wanted to make a difference.

Just pointing this out, do not only use Adam Norris he covers only the main concepts, not even all the main concepts, and there will be a lot more on the chapter test. He is a good supplement tho.

@kassh4 Good point! Sorry I didn’t mean JUST him. Of course do the reading/ notes to get the specifics and use other outside study aids, but he helps give a good overview and explains the things he does talk about pretty well. Thanks for the clarification! :slight_smile:

@ak2018 I’m in:
Orchestra/Full Orchestra

Black Student Union (The principal approved my proposal!)

Just need to write the charter and find a sponsor for a Girls Who Code club. Super excited for it! I think we have the space to invite kids from our local junior highs and 6th graders from the elementary schools.
