@apple1893 Having read some horror stories on College Confidential, my only question was what sort of person they’d dissuade from going to MIT ^^
I mean, it’s a d*** good info session they’ve got
This really nice interviewer lady told me that the only person she’s given an anti-recommend was disturbingly paranoid and thought everyone was out to get him. On the other hand, she emphasized that a ‘meh’ is hurting your application; your interviewer should be able to say ‘this is why ___ should go to MIT,’ and if you tell them ‘I spend my summers, um, texting with friends mostly’ that’s not gonna help!
Not that I don’t spend summers talking with friendos >v>
It’s the other stuff that counts, though- whatever candidly(!!!) puts you in the best light.
There are some other more me-specific questions I have, but I’d rather keep those private
One cool highlight: you can probably expect a really(!) diverse crowd! Coming from Indiana, roughly (from my spot near the back row) half the group was URM :0
@bubblylaugh That was so good! Do you mind if I give you a shoutout on my channel? Also, do you take requests? I would really like to see you play a Panic! At the Disco song, please!
@apple1893 It went well! One thing I found interesting was that the admissions officer said that Caltech isn’t purely about STEM - that the humanities and social sciences are important, too. She also said that the admissions people look for patterns in extra-curriculars and grades when reviewing the application.
My grades right now:
AP Chemistry: A+ (100%)
We’ve only had homework assignments put in-- I’m sure it’ll drop once we have our first test
Honors Precalc: A- (90%)
I got a 27/30 on my summer homework which is all that is in right now. We took a quiz on the second day of school that I got a 29/30 on, but my teacher still hasn’t put it in so I’m guessing it doesn’t count.
AP Lit: C (75%)
My teacher does that annoying thing where she gives us an assignment, grades it harshly, and then tells us what she was looking for. I hope it goes up cause I don’t do Bs, let alone Cs.
Medical Interventions: A+ (100%)
We’ve only had homework assignments in
AP Physics 1: Grade not available
We took a quiz last week and my teacher still hasn’t graded it
AP Microeconomics: A (98.5%)
I got a 98.5% on our first test last week!
GPA: 3.67 (my school doesn’t weight)
I believe weighted it would be a 4.0 but I’m not sure if I calculated that correctly.
i heard the senior talking about colleges today and they were talking about how no one in our school has gone to an ivy since like 2007 and no one has gotten into a kind of bigger school other than the UCs and tufts. just thought it was interesting…there was a guy last year who everyone thought would get into stanford but he got rejected…
@apple1893 what I did last year when I had a super difficult English teacher was have my teacher read my essay and give suggestions. It worked wonders, as she literally graded it.
If your English teacher doesn’t do this, you can go to a past English teacher or something.
@fuzzypolarbears No one in my high school has gotten into an ivy league directly from high school…at least you have some hope! You’ll be the first for sure!
@cliffnotes@nyuhopeful44 omg guys you’re all so sweet thanks for the encouragement i’ve decided to just work hard and do my best and see where it all goes
