High School Class of 2018

My grades rn are all 100%s or nothing bc I’ve only had homework and quizzes so far

AND…MY BROTHER GOT ME SICK! X( I felt terrible at school for most of the day today. I had a massive headache in AP Chem and was constantly getting up to get tissues. My parents just now said to take a pill and see if anything’s changed in 30 minutes. Either way, my parents know my workload. They know that missing one day of school isn’t the best for me with all of my AP classes. If the pills don’t work and I feel worse tomorrow morning, I’m not going to school.

@ak2018 @kassh4 thanks!

There was one person in the c/o 2015 who went to an Ivy and two in the 2016 class who went to Ivies.

Do I do too many ECs? The list looks long to me. I enjoy them, and I’m not dying yet, but can someone please give input

Probably gonna do Drama Club (for fun) and Model UN as it seems like a good learning opportunity.

I might also volunteer, and do some research (there is a really cool opportunity that I can’t resist) I do have interest, but it would be my first time to delve into the discipline

@Soccer1235 LUCKY!

@LeopardFire I would honestly hate to be to watch this any of this year’s political debates. I just have a bunch of missing work for AP Lang.

@cliffnotes I would say I’m both.

@fuzzypolarbears I think no one from my school has ever been enrolled at Harvard. Only 1 has gotten accepted. This shouldn’t discourage you.

@cliffnotes Is there a way you could show your stories to colleges?

@bubblylaugh I think you’re fine! You’re welcome too.

@bubblylaugh To make sure you don’t overwork yourself, I would go ahead and make a planner for when your clubs are.

So good news, I’m not as sick anymore! <:-P My headaches are lessening as well. This literally marks the shortest cold I’ve ever had (2 days).

Here are my grades right now:

Spanish 2: 89% - (B+)

Our listening quiz brought my grade up. I’m so close to an A!

Functions/Trigonometry (Pre-Calculus): 91% - (A)

I actually had a 95% on my test, not a 92%. My grade will go up by Friday once my teacher changes our quiz grades.

Engineering Explorations 1/Robotics: 90% - (A)

AP English Language and Composition: 100% - (A)
Still waiting for my grade to go down! LOL :))

PLTW Principles of Engineering: 100% - (A)
Still need to turn in the lab.

U.S. and Virginia History: 99% - (A)

AP Chemistry: 85% - (B)
I got a 78% (a C+) on our last quiz, which brought my grade down. Hopefully, my lab report will bring it up a bit.

Current Unweighted GPA: 3.77

Current Weighted GPA: 4.84 (I feel like I did this wrong! LOL)

IB Eng HL: A

IB Spanish IV: A

Creative Writing: A

US History: No grade bc I just switched in

Unweighted GPA (before this year): 3.995

My extracurriculars are so weak

@cliffnotes you’re in math hl and ap calc? Aren’t they the same class?

So today went much better than yesterday. Spanish was muy bueno, I’m barely understanding what we’re doing in Pre-Calculus (guess it’s time to study my textbook again), AP Lang was great, and I had a good time in U.S. and Virginia History while I was there.

During U.S. History, I decided to attend a college representative visit (where a college representative comes to your school). The representative was from The College of William and Mary, Virginia’s only "public’ Ivy league school. I asked some really great questions pertaining to the school’s joint engineering program with Columbia University in New York. I was actually very surprised by the answer. The representative had said that for the program, you would do 3 years of Physics at William and Mary and 2 years of Engineering at Columbia. However, many of those who participate in the program end up choosing to stay at William and Mary and go into grad school with an Engineering focus. Hearing this personally made me not like the school as much. The school itself is hard to get into anyway and feels really small.I like big schools with lots of school spirit!

At the end of the meeting, I asked the representative a question about my freshman year. During freshman year, as some of you may know, I was in Ghana. While there, I was in the U.S. equivalent of the 11th grade and was able to obtain a B in all of my classes except Physics, which I got a C in. My family friend was in the same class I was in, so he helped me understand what we were learning. When I told the representative about it, she was actually surprised that I was to get B’s and a C in those classes as a “freshman”. I also told her about my upward trend, grade-wise, since then.

So I was looking through the schools I’m applying to and decided to put them in a list of whether or not I will apply non-binding early action or regular decision and when I’d receive the decision.

Non-Binding Early Action: University of Virginia (By January 31st), George Mason University (By December 15th)
Regular Decision: Virginia Tech, The College of William and Mary, James Madison University, Virginia Commonwealth University

@ak2018 I did the same thing.

Early action: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Worchester Polytechnic Institute
Regular action: University of Washington, Eastern Washington University, Carnegie Mellon University (school of engineering or school of science), and Franklin W Olin College of Engineering

Y’all, I’m back. I feel old as heck, I honestly don’t even care to think about which university I’m attending or applying. I’m just going to focus on getting my grades up. My parents can choose all that early acceptance stuff, I’m stressed.

also, these are what I’m categorizing my safeties, reaches, and matches.
(for reference, here are my basic stats)
GPA: UW 4.0, W 4.338 (should be 4.628 when I apply to colleges)
Class Rank: 2/481
ACT: 36 C (36 E, 35 M, 36 R, 35 S)
Extracurriculars are good but not outstanding. I’m trying to delve a little deeper and make them more unique this year both for myself and for colleges lol.
Hooks: female applying for engineering??

Reach: MIT, CMU, Olin
Match: UDub, WPI (this is actually my current top school)
Safety: EWU (this is where I currently go to school)

Right now (I haven’t really researched yet so idk if I have some policies right)
Early Decision: But NYU (match)
Early Action: Princeton (reach) UMich (my dad is a $ donor-- idk if that helps) (match)
Rolling: Pitt (low match/safety)
Regular: Georgetown (high match), Northwestern (reach), John’s Hopkins (reach), Dartmouth (reach), George Washington (match), Columbia (reach), BU (match), Grand Valley State

My stats:
3.87 GPA unweighted
AP World History (9th grade)–5
APUSH (10th)–5
AP Bio (10th)–4
AP Psych (10th)–4
ACT: 31 superscore (retaking…)
PSAT 10: 1480
SAT2 Biology M: 710

Key Club State Board Position (2 yrs)
Key Club school secretary (1 yr)
PCEP Pals Founder (3yrs)
JV/Varsity Softball (4 yrs)
HOSA (2 yrs)
Link Crew (2 yrs)
NHS (2 yrs)
Volunteer at Miracle League

@nyuhopeful44 Im pretty sure you PSAT 10 score translate to a 33 ACT. Maybe you should focus on the SAT instead of the ACT. To better help determine if you should switch look at your sub scores.

@kassh4 I don’t like the idea of the math section being half my score. I’m bad at math

@ak2018 I did that too. I already have a list for Questbridge and one for if I don’t become a finalist.

Questbridge:

  1. Brown
  2. Yale
  3. MIT
  4. Stanford

I felt weird about ranking one school, so I put down a few more. The last three are non-binding, so I feel comfortable ranking them for Questbridge. The order for the last three isn’t really based on anything. I’m only sure that my #1 is Brown.

Early Decision: Brown
Early Action: MIT, UT-Austin(auto-admit and safety if financial aid is no problem), U Chicago, and Ohio State
Regular Decison: Cornell (They like Telluride kiddos?), Rice???, Yale???, U Mich, and Howard University

There’s a high likelihood I’m taking a few of these schools off my list. Hopefully LEDA’s an option, so I can visit some schools in the remote North. :))
