Yoooo @snowfairy137 I just realized that I’m going to the same ABS regionals as Kai Lightner, the dude that starred alongside Ashima (!!!) in the Young Guns portion of this year’s Reel Rock (!!!)
@Tobster18 I don’t know how a teacher can make people research something that isn’t proven true. As a matter of fact, I think that there are only two genders and that the field of biology would offer strong evidence for that opinion.
ok so guys if I missed this many do you think my score would make a cut off of at least 212?:
Reading: -5
Writing: -3
Math (No Calc):-8 (LOL I didn’t watch my time)
Math (Calc):-2
I probably screwed up badly but whatever.
@Tobser18 @TP2000 I don’t really care about this issue but the point of higher level research is to put away personal biases and look at evidence and understand that issues aren’t always usually just right or wrong (black or white). Also, again, I haven’t really investigated this issue in depth but if I remember correctly there are some interesting scientific biological theories on having more than 2 genders. Just do the assignment. You may be surprised, and if not, oh well, at least you know more about the opposing point of view. Its important to understand both sides of controversial issues and I think that’s what your teacher probably intends for you to practice.
(Also, no offense, but that kind of attitude is what makes people not want to listen to ultra conservative points of view)
@snowfairy137 I said that it was unfair for Tobster’s teacher to make him do research on a topic that doesn’t have a definitive answer, and you acknowledged that the question doesn’t have a definitive answer.
I don’t think there are more than two sexes/genders and there is biological evidence to back that up. I am fine with people who are transgender and think that that is entirely possible.
I am also quite liberal but I just so happen to think that if a person thinks that he/she is a computer or “biogender” or something else like that, it is probably only for attention and for the purpose of being different.
@thenorthstar Assuming you got exactly that many wrong and the cutoff is exactly the same as it was for the October 14th, 2015 PSAT (and it probably will be a little different), you would get a 1400 with a 211 selection index.
@tp2000 he’s literally in a college level research class. The point IS to research topics that don’t have a definitive answer.
@TP2000 and obviously identifying as a computer or whatever is just stupid, but if someone wants to use they/them pronouns and it makes them feel more comfortable then who cares?
@Tobster18 Are you not allowed to reach the conclusion that there is only two genders? You can still research into it, but I’m sure there will be sources that support that viewpoint.
Personally, I don’t really know how to feel about gender. There are two biological sexes, but I’m not entirely against the idea of someone maybe being agender or unsure, as long as they aren’t just trying to get attention. You can usually see through that pretty quickly.
@Tobster18 I think that there are male and female but you can be trans and change to the other one if you want. Anything past that, no
@Tobster18 If I’ve learned anything from my many years of research papers and essay writing, it is that you will have to write about things you don’t exactly approve of. Your teacher is probably doing this to make you a better researcher and debater. The best debaters are the ones who can debate on both sides, while showing as little bias towards one particular side as possible. All you really need to do is research as much as you can on the topic and make sure your personal bias is not really shown. It has definitely been done before.
@TP2000 There is a makeup PSAT date in November? Ask your counselor. Maybe you qualify?
@Tobster18 Research intersex people. They kind of break the common argument of there being 2 biological sexes. Everything is more murky than you think. You could genetically be intersex and not know! Nothing is ever black or white. (Turner’s Syndrome, Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, Caster Semenya, Taylor Lianne Chandler, Carlett Brown Angianlee, etc.)
Just do the research assignment. You’ll be surprised with the amount of research done on this topic.
@Hamlon I totally forgot about intersex people. That’s a great point.
I actually feel good about the Pre-Calc test I took last period… Not sure if I should be excited or scared.
@LeopardFire Intersex people are (depending on your definition) surprisingly common. I forgot to mention Thomas(ine) Hall. Their story is my favorite bc it shows that even in the 1600s people were breaking free from traditional gender roles/identifiers.
@Hamlon That’s actually a great idea. I didn’t even really know being intersex was thing. Thanks for teaching me something new! :))
@Hamlon Have you watched Faking It? My mom does, and while she was watching it once I was in the room. One of leads characters is intersex, and is played by Amanda Saenz, who is actually intersex.
Intersex awareness day is actually next Wednesday! For my GSA we are going to address it :^)
@Tobster18 @TP2000 actually, I’m pretty sure there is strong evidence that there are more than two genders. Gender is a social construct after all and there is a lot of research on it, so maybe it’s good that your teacher is making you guys research and learn about it it so you can become better educated. I would love it if my AP seminar class researched gender (and sexuality)!!
And one of the worst things you can be in a college level research class or any college class for that matter is closed minded or closed off to learning about “sensitive” subjects. What’s the point of taking a class or going to school if you don’t want to learn new things that change your perspective and views and overall affect your opinions and your overall self? Learning is best when it challenges your own thinking and forces you to change your perspective so you become an overall less ignorant and more intellectual and open person. :^)
I see where @Tobster18 is coming from. Say you were intersexual or what ever and your teacher made you write a paper on why there are only two genders obviously you are gonna get a little triggered.
@kassh4 And the thing is that he knows that, cause I constantly argue with him during class about stuff like that, so I feel like he low-key just tried to annoy me. But UPDATE: i talked to him, and he broadened the topic to gender in general, plus he said i wasn’t the only one who talked to him about it.
@Hamlon I was going to mention intersex but I see you got there first haha
@neonerudite my GSA’s next meeting is next Wednesday! That’s a fun coincidence!
Also, I don’t want to get very much into it, but I’ve found that sex and gender are different. Sex is the biological term for it, and there are 3 sexes (male, female, and inter). However, there is more than two gender identity, because gender is a state of mind (I like how @neonerudite put it - a social construct). Some common gender identities besides cisgender (identifying with a gender that corresponds with your biological sex) include transgender, gender fluid (fluctuating gender identity on a day to day, or even an hour to hour, basis), or agender (not identifying as any gender, regardless of their biological sex).
So there ends my lecture about gender vs sexuality haha I don’t mean to offend anyone or invalidate anyone’s opinions… these are just my opinions.
