I’m usually on fire in the first semester. I start to slack off by the time mid terms roll around LOL rip
@kassh4 I really don’t want to argue but no, those are not the same things at all. One is invalidating an entire person’s identity and a huge part of them, the other is just offending an ignorant belief. That’s like saying “I see where he’s coming from, what if a gay person had to write a paper on why homosexuality is fake” or something and equating that to a homophone having to write a paper on why homosexuality is real, and honestly it’s really hurtful. Do you see my point?I know everyone has a different perspective on things but it is sad to see this kind of thinking on CC, definitely considering what type of students frequent this thread lol.
serious disscusion aside
I havent done a grade check ever but my grades are looking pretty bad, I have a 71 in advanced comp and a 90 in AP seminar, but 100+ in all my other classes, which is good. Idk why my adv comp teacher won’t grade anything :’(
I know this is the worst reaction to have during a major cyber attack, but I was really excited through it all because it only validated the necessity of my mentorship group’s research project on security issues tied to Internet of Things (IOT) devices! :D/ One can only imagine the chaos if someone pulled this off 20 years in the future. We’d all be screwed. <:-P
@Marg532 I guess I just don’t understand anything other than boy, girl, and trans gender. Like how could you not have a gender at all? I guess my opinion on the whole thing is if you want to be another gender, then by all means, be that gender. Be happy. It’s a free country. But I hate it when people just change their gender at random and get mad when people can’t keep up with it. A couple kids at school will say stuff like "it’s monday so I identify as demigender so it’s rude that you referred to me as “him,” then tuesday rolls around and it’s “can’t you tell I’m a boy?” I hope I’m not being too offensive, but some if this stuff is just ridiculous.
@nyuhopeful44 I have to admit, gender identities is one of the harder concepts to understand, and I completely understand your views. Being a cisgender female, I can’t really explain it all very well, but I’ve read a couple books on the subject (because I’m a huge nerd who never stops reading haha) and I think that with the gender fluid identity, some days they feel more masculine (like they want to wear muscle shirts and play some football or some other stereotypical guy stuff), sometimes they feel more feminine (lipstick and a sundress all the way), and some days they are more tomboyish and are comfortable wearing something more androgynous like a hoodie and jeans. In all of the “cases” I’ve come across, gender fluid people prefer they/them pronouns versus whatever they are feeling like that day. Agender people, however, just don’t really feel connected with either gender, and prefer to wear and look more androgynous so as not to appear more masculine or feminine, and use they/them pronouns. Hope I’m of any help!
Grades:
AP USH: 85
AP Calculus BC : 90
AP Stat: 90
AP Lang : 100
French: 98
AP Physics :89
Grades that will go up: All except French and AP Lang
Grades that will go down: idk I’ll see
@Tobster18 I think your teacher might be doing you a favor. It sounds he really wants you to explore the opposite side of the topic. I can definitely understand where you’re coming from, but I believe all your teacher is trying to get you to explore the opposite sides of topics and look past bias. The AP Capstone teacher at my school says that he recommends students who are very open-minded to take his class. This means you have to be okay with other people’s opinions. Not doing so can possibly hinder your success in the class. This means you have to be okay with other people’s opinions. I would say definitely do the project. Will it be hard? Probably. Is it doable. Yes.
I’m saying all this because I am currently in the same situation. My U.S. and Virginia History assigned us to write an essay about why a certain candidate is more likely to win or lose. I don’t even know why we even have to do it. The problem was, he picked who we had to do the essay on, and it was either Hillary or Trump. I asked him if I could do another candidate, or even analyzing the candidates, but he said no. When I asked why, he said it was “because people get so caught up in their bias, they think their opinions are full-on truths and that they can’t be wrong.” I totally agreed. I feel like so many people think their opinions are almost always right and anything against it is wrong. Anyway, I decided to go ahead and do the essay because it wasn’t that big of a deal. It would mean doing some research, but for the most part, I feel I’m still going to learn something from this. That was the whole point of this project. To learn things we haven’t learned before.
Sorry for this long-winded post, but really, you should think about it. I’m pretty sure all your teacher is trying to do is make you explore the world beyond your opinions. It will only make you a better writer.
@neonerudite I would have to completely disagree with on gender being a social construct. Gender and sex are both biologically constructed; however gender ROLES are socially constructed, not gender. I also think that @kassh4 was right in his comparison as my belief is not ignorant, but well informed. The comparison he made was to show that the research topic conflicts with researcher’s person’s belief, therefore automatically triggering a hesitant emotional response.
@Marg532 Gender is neither a social construct nor is it a spectrum. Feelings are a spectrum, height, weight, race are all spectrum, but not gender. It’s one or the other. You can have more feminine characteristics as a male, but that does not make you a female. I can’t say I identify as a banana if I was born a human, the same way you can’t identity as a male if born female and vice versa. However, our liberally biased media and society, has managed to corrupt the minds of many with the lies that every human being has the “right” to identify as whoever or whatever they may in order for the expression of their “identity”. However, the liberal media has only done so to remain politically correct, as well as bolster the ethos of the democratic party via identity politics.
But you are all entitled to your own opinion. ;
Anyways, A LOT has happened in the last three days. I might as well start with our WILD homecoming game.
For the most part, it was really great. I had a really good time! I took some selfies, talk with some friends, even started some chants. Everything was going…until one of my senior friends got drunk. One of the administrators smelled it on him and he had to be walked down to take a Breathalyzer test. Everyone started shouting “Free Him!”, but that quickly died down. I was next to him for most of the game and I didn’t smell a bit of alcohol on him. The worst part was, I’m pretty sure it was his 18th birthday today. I’m pretty sure he got hauled off in a police car too. It really sad because everyone just kind of left. He was a really nice guy too. At the very least, he’ll probably be suspended for a week or two.
@Tobster18 all I have to say to that is do your research. We can have opinions, but I tend to strongly disagree with any opinion that harms an entire group of people and invalidates their experiences and feelings. But yeah. I hope to god that no non-cisgendered people see this thread bc they would be so hurt.
I always get really fired up about this kind of stuff lol. Probably bc I’m a minority/LGTBQ+ and active in GSA and social issues and all that stuff, so sorry for making this discussion a lil heated.
Wouldn’t calling someone’s beliefs “ignorant” be ignorant?
btw: I don’t really care about people identifying as different genders. If you want to be a male on Mondays and Earthgender on Tuesday go ahead, but if I was a strong christian with conservative views i too wouldn’t feel comfortable with writing a paper thats completely against what i believe.
@kassh4 They are pretty ignorant. My anti-ignorance philosophy is, “If it’s not putting down you or people in general, what’s your problem?” Plus, why would you ever be complacent with an individual being someone else’s hater? We’d still have segregation (In actuality, we still do, but it’s mostly economic nowadays) if that were the case!
@nyuhopeful44 Gender mostly relates to how you view yourself and the ways in which you feel you can best connect with others. In simpler terms, it’s what makes you comfortable. You might find it ‘ridiculous’, but that classmate probably doesn’t care what you think!
Maybe actually have a conversation so you can better understand where your peer is coming from instead of anonymously putting them down in a thread full of strangers??
@Tobster18 There’s a reason I mentioned intersex people bc it shows that sex is a spectrum too and isn’t just male/female. If you’re going to argue that sex is tied to gender, you’re going to have to recognize both as a spectrum. Otherwise, are intersex people or individuals with hormonal imbalances like PCOS (decent size of the population) excluded? What are your criteria for sex? There are major gray areas for every single one I can think of.
If gender must then be a spectrum , the "lies that every human being has the ‘right’ to identify as whoever or whatever " must have some truth, right? Gender just can’t be ‘one or the other’ when you account for those who don’t meet every criteria for each sex. Gender was created as an umbrella identifier, to place people into certain societal roles. Many people don’t completely match all the criteria (which ones even?) for sex and therefore gender (if they must be tied together by your logic). Historically, many societies didn’t develop the binary system you describe either. The labels are arbitrary and if you want to continue believing they are concrete and sound, you should at least know that the terms male/female are approximations at best. Given the importance our society places on labels though, it is a necessity for many to assign themselves one that better approximates their experience.
Living in a very conservative state, I have to be open-minded to the beliefs of others. You would hope I am because I’m so liberal I think Bernie Sanders is still too far right for my taste in certain issues! Texas is very laissez-faire and I’ve come to understand where my peers are coming from when they say the government shouldn’t be in their business. Let’s face it, the government is slow and stupid and bureaucracy can be convoluted as heck. Take the city of Houston’s lack of city planning for example. Do a little googling on this topic. I recommend watching ‘Jay Austin’s Beautiful, Illegal Tiny House.’ Amazing what a lack of bureacracy amd government interference can accomplish, right? I was OPEN-MINDED and able to see the benefit of a perspective. Do I always agree with it? Heck no! But I’m more educated because of my openness. You won’t get anything useful out of college, if you don’t learn that skill. Learn it now.
Well, I’m done with this debate, because as much as I like to share my beliefs, I understand that some people will never listen, so it’s not worth it to me to get all up in arms about it. I’ve learned this from growing up and living in an extremely conservative town where there was almost a lawsuit against the school for allowing my female to male trans friend use the male bathrooms, where for the longest time I was terrified to come out to my dad because of his borderline homophobic views, and where one of my best friends can’t come out as gay to his parents because his father would disown him. So, I’ve learned that there is a time and place to talk about certain things, and apparently this board isn’t one of them anymore.
To move onto a less-heated topic, today I will be getting at most 10 hours of community service. First, I’m acting as a historical figure from my town in a cemetery walk hosted by the Historical Society, and that will give me a good 6 hours. Then, I’m going immediately to a halloween party at my elementary school to help out, and I will get around 2 hours there. And all of that is calculated without accounting for tearing down each activity. There won’t be much to tear down at the cemetery (at most, it’s the refreshments table and the ticket table), but tearing down the gym after a halloween party should be fun haha.
I would do a grade update, but they haven’t changed very much since my last. I will do one at the end of the 1st marking period, which is in at least a week or two.
@Marg532 I agree.
I have an audition today and they removed one of the school districts from my region. Last year, students from that district alone were more than half of the orchestra. I was one of the few outside of that district to make region. There’s like no competition anymore and I’m pretty confident I’m going to be one of the top 5 cello players in my region. Some of these kids sound BAD.
I made region! I did worse than I thought I would bc of random stage fright, but I made the orchestra in the end. <:-P
Application for the Jackson Summer Student program is OPEN! They accept very few people that apply, but applying will give me a better chance than 0%
Just ran my cross country region race today, both our varsity and JV (I’m JV) teams got first!!! State here we come (at least for varsity), I’m so happy rn omg
Right after the race I went to my friends’ theater one-act competition, and they got first as well! I saw the play twice and oh my god it is literally the best play/perfomance I have ever seen in my entire life. So many emotions, such great acting all in 50 minutes. I was not suprised at all that they won. So they are going to state too!!!
Honestly our school is killing it with region competitions this weekend :’)
