High School Class of 2018

Random Question: Does anyone else like candy corn? I LOVE IT!

Also, for anyone interested in STEM (mainly with NASA) programs or scholarships and lives in Alabama, Virginia, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, North Carolina, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, or West Virginia, there is a link to a few programs that might be cool to look at.

@ak2018 I love candy corn too!!

Has anyone here had any experience taking community college courses during the school year? I’m thinking of taking one either online/or actually at a college during second semester? Lmk what classes you guys took and how that went for you.

@mirandaf I’m taking all my classes junior and senior year at a local 4 year college and its great! It takes a littlie getting used to but its really good preparation for college.

Speaking of which. YOU GUYS MY COLLEGE IS OFFERING A CLASS CALLED “DOCTOR WHO AND PHILOSPHY” SPRING QUARTER AND IT COUNTS FOR AN ENGLISH CREDIT (to graduate high school) SO I CAN TAKE IT WITHOUT MESSING UP MY SCHEDULE PLAN AND I’M SO EXCITED OMMGGGG

sorry for the yelling. You can probably tell I’m slightly excited.

@snowfairy137 LUCKY! :open_mouth:

Rant (Kind of):

Does anyone else have to deal with an obnoxious classmate who likes to brag? There’s this sophomore in both my engineering classes and my math class that literally loves to brag about how easy his STEM classes. In all of the classes I have with him, he doesn’t really pay attention to what he considers “easy” and reads a book. Not only that, but he’s in really advanced classes and will likely get into Virginia Tech out of legacy (as several of his relatives have attended). I really don’t have anything to worry about, as he’s not in my graduating class, but it just kind of pisses how some people can literally not pay attention to what is being taught half the time and can still pass the class, especially in AP classes.

@snowfairy137 Thanks for your reply. What classes do you find the most challenging to adjust to? How hard are intro classes compared to AP if you’ve taken them? Do you think it will be a lot to balance school classes with one or two community college courses?

@droporain Basically what the others said, I’ve had more experience with the SAT in the form of the PSAT, and I don’t like the idea of a science section.

@ak2018 I definitely seen kids like that. If its any consolation, he may be able to breeze through now, but once he gets into college, its likely he will struggle due to lack of study skills, not to mention that he will be surrounded by others who were just like him in high school.

@ak2018 the bragging part does sound obnoxious but if he doesn’t pay attention and still gets good grades, that’s good for him maybe he’s gonna challenge himself with harder material

@snowfairy137 so you don’t even attend your regular high school

Thanks for the responses guys! I’m taking the SAT again in December (I took it in October and didn’t do so hot) and I’m just waiting for my ACT scores to come out so I can make a final decision

I’m leaning towards SAT though, I thought the ACT math was too much geometry that I didn’t feel like re-learning, and the science sections kills me every time

Going to do the SAT because I’m not familiar with the ACT at all lol.

Halloween was a major struggle with candy because I have weight certifications for wrestling on Thursday and still have a little bit of weight to go. Also, SAT is really the more common test in my area (PA) and my high school proctors it. I wouldn’t even know where to begin with ACTs

@droporain Honestly, before the SAT was redesigned (and before I found out I wasn’t going to be in a math class Junior year), I would have leaned more towards the ACT.

With everything going on right now, I feel like the ACT is more work to study for than it’s worth. I’m only taking both because my district pays for all Juniors to sit for the ACT.

@BucketsUCSC yea, its great

@Mirandaf of course it depends on your course load at high school and your commuting time and stuff, but at least here, a lot of people manage it. I’m taking physics, chem, english, and multivariable calculus.
Physics is going well, I personally think the pace is good (even though we apperently end up covering more than AP Physics C in a year). I think that partially has to do with my teacher, I know the physics teacher at my hs, and although hes a cool guy, I think my professor is a much better teacher.
Chem as a year long series I think covers about as much as AP chem, but Im not planning on taking the whole thing, which is nice for flexibility. My teacher is really picky but I dont think the content itself is harder than honors at my school.
I feel like in the college theres slightly more resources for science labs although this depends from school to school obviously. We have scheduled lab times every week and 2-3 hours to work, so its nice not having to fit everying into an hour like at hs.
English is cool, we’re working on one research paper all quarter. I think its pretty easy but one nice thing is all the online resource databases that colleges suscribe to makes reaseach sooo much easier. I think AP Lang is harder but I dont really care.
Multivariable calculus at least for me feels slightly easier and slower paced than BC. Of course its a different class but I think theres less content to cover.

I think my teachers are pretty knowlagable in what they teach which is always good and I really like begin able to use my laptop to take notes and stuff which I cant do in hs. I also like the freedom.

Of course keep in mind those are my classes at a 4 year college and your experience will probably be at least slightly different. I also haven’t taken AP Lang, Physics C, or Chem so I dont know for sure. Hope this helps though!

i’m still conflicted so i’m planning to take both in the spring. I’m gonna take subject tests in december and i’ll definitely take math level 2 but idk if i should take biology with it. are we allowed to send send 1 score if we take 2 on the same day and not send the other?

taking the sat because I was approved for accommodations and I’m more familiar with the format.
