@FunnyKiwi Want to trade places :D?
@snowfairy137 Just finished a lab report in Chem 11 on the spectra of gas discharges! I hate how it’s marked based on Canadian spelling. Spelled colour as color, sulphur as sulfur, and metre as meter? You lose half a point to a full point because American spelling is wrong (and under Canadian spelling, it should be spelt and not spelled!).
@ak2018 Congrats! I think it was more your hard work than luck.
@HelloThereHola I actually did check it over on the website and called GMU to confirm that it was legit and it was There is a tuition, but I will likely be eligible for a scholarship to pay most of it. My parents are still considering the program for me since my father is an alum.
@acomfysofa That sucks. Are you going to school in Canada or something?
Well, my school’s Academic Award Ceremony is tonight. Apparently, all we’re getting is a large patch and a certificate. I’m still going because there will be food afterwards. :))
So my Spanish teacher is planning on having us do the mannequin challenge tomorrow during class! We were challenged by the 4th period French class to do so. I’m actually pretty excited. What pose do you guys think I should make?
I ended up getting a 14/20 on the lab I was complaining about so I feel like my complaints were pretty justified… at least its still a C.
Anyone have an MIT launch program in their school? A friend just started one in my school a little late, but we managed to get our pitch in in two days, but it’s really fun! Definetly recommend it for anyone interested in entrepreneurship
I’m trying to work my way through my college list, really struggling trying to decide between what’s important vs. what’s not, if anyone else wanted to share their’s or is applying to the same schools
Notre Dame - Has pretty much everything thing I want
Cornell- Dad is pushing this one, haven’t looked into it much
Williams- new addition from a great packet they sent, the winter study sounds amazing but I’m unsure about a smaller school/liberal arts school
Michigan- Only uncertainty is how urban it might be
Northwestern- Same as Michigan
Penn State- Been going here forever, love the campus and culture and the honors college has great research opportunities
UNC- haven’t looked into it enough yet, but I was on campus a couple years ago and it was beautiful
Lehigh- Feels too focused on engineering/close to home
Miami of Ohio- safety school, but the program seems good and it’s a great college town
I think that my options are rather limited, considering that I want to go to medical school and I have to keep the cost down. So, it will be something like Alabama for full ride or maybe some other scholarships through PSAT if I do well, or my local state university(ies?)
Yup, east coast Canada and been here all my life!
@acomfysofa then why aren’t you used to Canadian spelling?
College list (kinda from top to bottom in terms of where I want to go):
Worchester Polytechnic Institute (match) - cool school, has a robotics degree…
MIT (reach) - um… engineering. The culture there sounds pretty great too.
Carnegie Mellon (reach) - Again, sounds like a cool place to be. (They have a degree in bagpiping what’s not to like??) I could double major in physics and robotics or mechanical engineering and robotics pretty easily
University of Washington (match) - good school, a lot of my friends go there, State flagship
Eastern Washington University (safety) - safety school, I’m taking classes there rn so those would all “transfer”
I might look at more schools with NM scholarships if I get that, but all of them are in places I don’t really wanna live
How are people deciding between SAT and ACT!! Still can’t decide which to focus on
@rebecca62 take timed practice tests in both and see which you do better on
@ak2018 NHS is a really good thing to be a part of during high school. I’m joining it next year!
Congratulations! That’s awesome!
The YSPA application opens in 2 weeks! I’m so excited!
@rebecca62 I’m taking the SAT because my school does College Board standardized tests (so I don’t have to study more stuff and take a different-format test).
My college list (organized by type):
Caltech (reach) - very good for astronomy and planetary science, plus I could intern at JPL to dabble in mech. engineering
Yale (reach) - great school for more theoretical astronomy and physics
Dartmouth (reach) - AMAZING region. very good for music and theoretical things in physics/astronomy.
Brown (reach) - looks good for physics (if I want to do that for undergrad).
BU (match) - I love Boston, and it would be a good school to do a dual-degree program.
McGill (match) - legacy applicant, plus it would be a good utilization of my dual-citizenship.
University of Arizona (safety) - warm area and a very good school for astronomy, planetary science, etc.
University of Maine (safety) - very close to where I live already. good for physics and has a great astronomy center.
I’m visiting Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, BU, and McGill (along with other schools) this spring and (hopefully) University of Arizona and Caltech next fall.
@frazzledazzle I visited the University of Arizona last Sunday and I really liked the campus. I did get to see the building for planetary sciences and it was really cool, and apparently UofA is really good for planetary sciences due to the fact that lots of equipment for astronomy is located in Tucson. There is also a train right next to the campus that somebody can take to go to downtown Tucson which is really convenient.
I just finished my final essay (14 page o.O) for my composition class! Its due in like a week but we can turn it in on Friday for teacher feedback.
@snowfairy137 Canadian spelling is a mix of American and British spelling conventions with no common set standard. For example, guidance counsellor (British spelling used here) and realize (American spelling used here) could be put into the same sentence. But using guidance counselor (American spelling) and realise (British spelling) in the same sentence instead wouldn’t bat an eye.
I’d rather have either one or the other for consistency when writing. I happened to choose American spelling just because it’s my preference.
